Transport costs and the Green Party

The Green Party want to make airline travel considerably more expensive bt taxing aviation fuel and replace short haul flights with travel by railways which they propose to renationalise . I wonder how much compensation they propose to pay to the train operating companies or have they even bothered costing it . ?.In additional food will be more expensive as they will impose additional charges on large goods vehicle and propose to switch transportation of freight where possible to both rail and canals . Luckily these ideas will remain in dreamland as they are a minority party.

No problem with moving freight back on to the railroads. A lot more freight was moved by rail before privatisation

I think it should be moved by rail again.

Tut tut, Dreamland is a Liberal policy. They won't want to be be having the Greens as lodgers.

rail freight wont work any more. there are no depots to store it the railhead, no transport to take it onto the end user. everything got centralised in massive distribution centers to use the motorway network. As for canals! seriously??

Nothing is set in stone, changing emphasis away from road isn't impossible and would take less of the countryside to reinstate the rail network than keep building more and more roads

Once upon a time they said Staem Locomotives would never catch on, and if they did, where would they go.

Engineers, in the main, got on with it.

Think that was before Metropolitan Councils though.

manchester & NI

I have no other way to get home to Northern Ireland except by air travel.

The ferry is much too expensive for just one person and adds many hours to the journey.

In theory I'd love there to be a high speed rail connection between NI & Scotland but it's not going to happen.

So increasing air fares wouldn't make me less likely to fly, it would just mean I'd have to pay more.

It is not surprising though is it? The Greens political statements are driven from an ideologically driven point of view. Their view of the world is very pretty and nice, topped off with cotton wool and cherries on top but misses out on the fact that it needs the whole world to buy into the concept.

Outside of these shores, the rest of the world is very different to the complacency that exists here. People fight and die for the right to have an education and for the right to vote. People fight and die to have the right to get on in life and have the ability to do better for themselves and their family. Green policies would take any country backwards in terms of economic output and there are plenty of people and countries who would step in lightning fast to plug the gap.

Bottom line is that the Greens have laudable and very nice ideological ideas. Unfortunately, those ideas fly in the face of human nature and therefore are considered by the majority as being extremist because they would be so damaging to people in their normal day to day life.

Freight is carried more and more by rail but by and large the ignorant public do not realise it.

Large companies use rail for bulk transport or long distant transport. Rail is not as convieniant as the road network and at some stage the majority of frieght has to be routed by road.

nut jobs?

Scrapping the army in favour of wind farms

Dropping the speed limit to 55mph

Giving prisoners the vote

I don't know how you can call them nut jobs

Taxing polluter's does not significantly reduce pollution ......

It never has and never will...

You can't pistol whip effective changes in behaviour.....

Offering the reward by reducing or removing taxes for those adopting environmentally friendly behaviour is the only effective economic incentive,,,,

Sox has spoken and the issue is now resolved...

Freight by rail would be great and could free up roads a fair bit.

Our train system nationalized would be great too. The profit creaming operators have had billions in subsidies so feel they've had their fair compensation already.

Well given its a specialised job it will actually just be providing work for people who already do it more so than making new jobs.

Unless you Count contractors getting jobs as a new job.

Lol your all arguing about cars and air travel through petroleum as if there'll be around forever.

Regardless of the green party these things will be confined to the history books as there unsustainable!.

You can either wait till the end and then be totally unprepared for that moment or move slowly across now while we have those resources at hand!.

Exactly which is why we should be putting our efforts into Fracking, Wind Farms, Solar and nuclear energy!!

The technology is there now so let's exploit it!!

Newcastle and Gateshead

i have no problems with them renationalising the railways... bearing in mind the only franchise not being subsurdised by the government in part is the one that the coalition stupidly gave to virgin a few weeks ago (the east coast franchise was in effect the only one making money back enough to give some back to the government......and was being run really well by DOR)

Wind is sadly stealing a lot of money and lime light that would have been much better spent investing in tidal, or wave power.

Wave power is capable of providing useful base load power unlike wind.

But it's not as attractive as a big section of bouys or snake like wave generators don't look as good on the environmental pamphlets.

With all our cost though wave could provide a huge amount of our base load power something wind can never do.

I would argue three are at the moment.

Nuclear can be sustained for a long period of time. Just finding room for the spent fuel is a little problematic.

Fast breeder reactors are the solution to the waste problem as they can can use it for fuel.

The problem is they're also useful for enrichment (hence why they can use waste for fuel) so they weren't invested in because you couldn't sell them to anyone because they could be used to make material for nuclear weapons.

India is investing heavily in thorium reactors atm which has massive potential (thorium is one of the most abundant elements on earth)

Wind was never designed as a base load power output, it's a filler producer, it's as cheap if not cheaper than coal and gas hence the massive rise in them worldwide!

"Here we go on the fracking debate "

Speaking as someone with over 25 years experience in the methods used for hydrocarbon exploitation..... I certainly don't relish the idea of widespread fracking operations on the UK mainland..

Far to many risk associated with failure to successfully maintain environmental controls ..... all of which have the potential to create irreversible damage to vital recourses....

.

If you swapped the world output of electricity to nuclear... You'd be out of uranium in 50 years! This is excepted scientifically by nearly every scientist, except a few that work for nuclear generators!.

Fast breeder reactors are notoriously hard to manage and increase the danger levels several fold, not to mention extremely costly to build and maintain and cost a fucking fortune to decommission, one accident costs you ever bit of saving and more!.

Just ask the Russians and the Japanese!.

Thorium is very much a possibility which I've read extensively on, there cheap inherently safer and tested, there lack of making atomic fuel by products certainly hasn't helped there investment chances unfortunately.

But it's useless for that role because you can't decide when it ramps up and it occasionally had to be shut off completely if the wind gets too high.

It should never have got the investment it has over other sources of renewable.

That's the older fast breeders which existed purely for weapons development. If they'd of had the investment that has been put in to civil designs they'd be much further ahead by now.
