"So Ed Milliband is championing a female James Bond and people think this man can run the country .... Yet another reason to keep the lefties out !
Why shouldn't there be a female Bond ?"
Because Ian Fleming the author wrote James Bond as a man.
There is nothing to stop stories being written about the many female spies there were or even imaginary spies but why destroy the original image |

What!? How powerful are women that just by being cast in a fictional dramatic role one of them can destroy a whole archive of film and written word? |

He also wrote the stories at a time when half the gadgets used in current films could not even be imagined.
He wrote M as a man but Dame Judi was accepted when she played M.

1. what sets bond apart from his competition (Ethan Hunt, Jason Bourne et al) is his quintessential English Gentleman's charm, something that just would not be the same from a woman.
2. As a character he engages something an old fashioned childish fantasy inside men something a woman in the role could not.
Basically what makes Bond, Bond is the sexist misogynistic boys own adventure. You kill the baddie, and get the girl, a story that hits the genetic make up of a man.
This is why, albeit in my opinion, why Bond could never be portrayed by a woman.

Yes that makes sense and I don't see a problem with it as such except your statement that in your opinion Bond could "never" be portrayed by a woman and your claim that genetics is why men feel this way.
If we opened our minds to at least try and accept a female in a traditional male role might we see that it's nurture rather than nature that makes us feel the way we do?
My opinion only. |

But it is this igniting of the primal element in blokes that makes the franchise work.
Remove that and you kill the franchise creating something else. I have no issue with a female led spy franchise, Angelina Jolie was great in Salt. But to make a female Bond work it would have to be a totally different film so would no longer be a "Bond" film.
As i stated what sets Bond apart from the others is the cave man element. The Knight in shining armour saving the damsel in distress. You loose this core element replacing Bond with a female lead.
You could quite easily have a Female led Borne movie, especially given the story mechanic of having other characters taking a lead - and that would be a great move as you have no need to stick to a tried and tested character

were will it stop though..? a female playing the part of john Rambo or conan the barbarian..? then it might move on to historical characters.. a woman playing the henry the eighth or Julius ceasar..or even a man playing Cleopatra or mary queen of scots..? why cant the do gooders just leave some things alone and stop messing them up in the name of political correctness..? leave bond as a man for fucks sake |

I wouldn't say no to a black female Bond if an actress could pull off the role convincingly enough and with enough gravity and panache.
The more I see of Mr Alba, the more I'm liking him, although his age may not be in favour in a few years. |

Maxine Peake recently played Hamlet, Harriet Walter played Henry IV, there was an all female production of Julius Caesar and history tells us that the female Shakespearean parts were played by men.

This for me... Bond is meant to be a somewhat twisted and only just on the side of right and wrong man ...So can't be a woman .. Bond is already a character with definition |

Mike Batt had the best idea for a female Bond, by far. Google is your audio , and visual, delight.
Well, that's misogynistic (really?) men and lezzas catered for, now back to the film industry. |

Something just doesn't look right about a lady firing a rocket launcher or automatic rifles, she could only use a pistol to suit her image.

One thing to think about during the capture/torture scenes bond is usualy sexually teased by his female captor, now in the films this is kinda sexy/risqué.
Think how down right rapey/creepy rat would be with a male captor and female prisoner |

Cause of societal norms.
Watch the world is not enough where he's getting choked in the garrot chair how creepy would that scene be the other way around. |

Thinking about this I reckon Bond should stay as he is, a dated old dinosaur using sexual charisma to charm women into helping him fight the baddies.
If we are to have a woman in a strong, lead role I think I'd sooner she didn't step into an old pair of shoes.
A female Bond would challenge many sexual stereotypes though which I would consider a good thing but if the main revenue from the films comes from men (no idea) it'll never happen. |

A lot of the tongue in cheek comments on here by the men are funny and you have to laugh at the ribbing but there are some males who without any decent logic/reasoning or even original idea just make crystal clear how scared they are.
Bottom line = It's a fictional character in a fictional world doing fictional things.

I just don't think a female bond would be as appealing as much to men, as alot of men think his lifestyle is amazing, he gets the guns, gadgets, cars, girls,,,,,,,,it's a blokes dream life.
The film needs to appeal to its audience which I would think is mostly male. It's not sexism it's just that the character of the stories is a male, let's not change that. If you want to watch a female secret agent, watch nikita!
For instance, what if we changed Mary poppins to a bloke,,,,,it would be weird and wouldn't work. |

Yep, but I suspect they've moved on from bra burning. |

Personally, I think the idea of a Female bond is just ludicrous. The character is and always should be Mr James Bond.. To try and make a female "Bond" would just be silly.
On the other hand, there is no reason at all why someone shouldn't write stories about a female "Bond style" spy who isn't bond.

My name is Bond... Juliet Bond
Licenced to kill anyone who doesnt have matching cushions and throwovers.
I cannot do short notice assasinations as a Girl must have time to have her Hair and Nails done before colour coordinating ones outfit befitting the situation, Also once every twenty eight days i am unavailable due to being sat in the corner sobbing while wracked with stomach cramps and violent mood swings, During this time all sharp imploments and dirty bombs disguised as Tampons are locked away in a nuclear Bunkerg

Why shouldn't there be a female Bond ?
Because Ian Fleming the author wrote James Bond as a man.
There is nothing to stop stories being written about the many female spies there were or even imaginary spies but why destroy the original image"
Finally someone who gets it! |

I don't need Google to find out who she is. Im asking you for your understanding. Which, at present just seems to be negative myth perpetuation without substance. |

I met a member of the Blakes 7 cast recently - she should be in it if there's a remake.

So what? Fiction gets adapted all the time. Loads of famous characters change over the years. The Benedict Cumberbatch Sherlock Holmes isn't really the same character as the one in the books.
I don't get the big deal. |

Everything after Fleming's original books has been an interpretation. Bond has been Scottish, rather than the quintessential Englishman described earlier in this thread. Bond will be as the writers choose to present him (or her) to us in the future.

Isn't it about time the whole "Bond" thing was put to bed (fnarr fnarr). It's outdated, all the original stories have been done.
Time for a new Hero/Heroine?
Pops off to watch True Lies and JLC. And pop off.

Wasn't Bond gay ?
I saw a documentary wher Fleming said the original Bond was a homosexual but that wouldn't have been popular so he changed him into a womaniser for a bit of a whimsey. He had no idea it would take off so much with all the gullible macho types.

"I think putting judy dench in as m was because stella rimmington was head of mi5/mi6 and shit..but putting a woman in as bond will fuck it all up..its just pc going mad again
why would it? no one has yet provided a good answer for this.
were will it stop though..? a female playing the part of john Rambo or conan the barbarian..? then it might move on to historical characters.. a woman playing the henry the eighth or Julius ceasar..or even a man playing Cleopatra or mary queen of scots..? why cant the do gooders just leave some things alone and stop messing them up in the name of political correctness..? leave bond as a man for fucks sake"
Rambo was based on a true story.... |

Highly unlikely as bond was based on Fleming, himself an alcoholic womanizer, and a few other SOE agents he knew.
Especially given the time the books were written and what happened to the likes of Turin (someone that Fleming had more than one falling out with). |

I think the point was that back then being gay was illegal. A gay hero would not have been accepted by publishers, film studios or even the public in general...

There's a line in Skyfall where Bond refers to his homosexual past. He is tied up by the male villain who starts undoing Bonds shirt and is suggesting sexual contact. Bond looks him in the eye and says "what makes you think this is my first time ?"
So he is at least Bi. |

Already explained by Daniel Craig and the director.. Its escape and evade 101, never let them see you bleed. The baddie is trying to make bond feel uncomfortable to break him down, bond is countering the technique ... |

Oh the old I'm straight but will play bi in the right circumstances routine.I would have thought that James Bond would be secure enough not to have to make excuses. |
