Good point about trusting the person who in the past has shown that they are really not trustworthy.
I guess the question is also about "Can people change" then? |

... Oh, sorry - Yes, i think it's a great idea, usually the talented individuals that grow up rebelling against the machine are the very ones that end up in a position to be able to save companies. They probably know more about the companies IT systems, or rather it's weaknesses than the company itself! |

They are, after all, the perfect subject matter experts.
If you want to know the best way to do something then rather than employ a theory expert employ someone who's done it!
At school my French/German teachers were French and German. The business studies teacher came to teaching late in life after years of commercial experience. The head of PE played rugby at just below national level. The Head of RE was a vicar. Sex Ed was actually taught by the school nurse.
These days a lot of things are taught (or managed in the private sector) by people with little practical experience and nothing more than knowledge gleaned from books.
You can't beat real life experience.

I tend to agree with you - and I guess especially in IT security we are under huge pressure to keep up. In fact some argue it is a losing battle?

They're hacktivists not white hat hackers or ethical hackers. It's a different thing entirely.
