The penknife (and the pen) get their name from the male swan.

Back in days gone by men carried folding knives to make a nib in swan feathers to use as quills. A majority of the feather were from male swans known as Pens.

Contrary to popular belief a regular Biro works perfectly well in space and pencils aren't used because if the tip breaks off it can damage the electronics....
