A simple question, why are vampires so popular in romantic/erotic fiction and fantasies..?

Because they are portrayed as sensual,passionate,deep and extremely sexy. I read the Christine Feehan Carpathian novels. Every Carpathian is sexy,dominant and physically fit. They have different personalities but they all have the need for a woman to make them live.

Although Carpathians are vampires they are good and feed on animal blood or choose humans who live on the street,but make sure they don't harm them. I like good vampires.

But couldn't any character be portrayed in the same positive fashion? Is the neck biting/blood drinking an essential part of the excitement, and if so why?
