When I was fat it was a description not an insult.
Same as skinny is now seen as a description not an insult.
If you want to insult me, at least put a little effort into it |

I tend to brush it off its not like I can hide the fact therefore I find it funny that someone has tried to insult me with something that really isn't a problem for me yes I am fat and on the larger side of life but fuck it I am happy with who I am |

Depends how it's said I guess.
If someone said something that we in a descriptive context without malice or hurtful intentions then no, it wouldn't bother me. I call myself fat all the time.
If someone is trying to use it to insult me then I have an issue. |

It's all about the context. Someone shouting 'fat bitch' at me from a passing car is intended as being insulting, but it really just highlights the maturity of the person saying it. I think many avoid using the word fat though because of it's usual insulting tone rather than it being a descriptive word... Even I don't use it much because people feel the need to jump to my defence and I can't be arsed with that |

Well fat certainly is a description, as to whether you consider it an insult.
Is being fat a good or bad thing, if you think it's good or ok then it's not insulting
If however you consider it bad to be fat then im guessing being described that way isn't good. |

If people don't state the bleedingly obvious, like 'see you're breathing today', then the likelihood of them stating something that is patently clear would be to denigrate and put someone else down. I'd not be interested in anyone who's not respectful of others. |

If someone described me as fat I wouldn't be offended. If they described me as a fat bitch...yeah...different context, I'd be offended. |

It's a loaded word - I would say it's about more than context, it's about the attitude and intent of the user. I am very fatist - with regard to myself and other people. I might say to my cat 'Hey fat cat' without prejudice, but most of the time I will pick another if I am speaking with affection rather than judgement. |

I guess the implication with the expression fat is that it is some how self inflicted it's more than a description of some ones physical status but also a comment on they mental state and moral fiber as well as self discipline.
Now before I get flamed by all in-sundry Iim not saying it's my own personal _iew, but it is a _iew held by a lot of society. |

Depends on the context.
I am fat, and will use the word as a descriptor. However if someone is angry and calling me "fat bastard" or something similar then it becomes a term of abuse.
personally I wish to reclaim the word. |

A girl in my daughters class many years ago (when they were 5) once called my daughter fat. She came home all confused because she's skinny (always has been!)
I had to explain to her the the other girl must have been called fat before, and it obviously hurt her - she wanted to hurt my daughter, do used the same insult.
My daughters reaction - confusion, and pity for the other girl
Just goes to show that even at a young age an insult can hurt, and they learn young!

Like others have said it's about context. It's a word, I don't use. I think there are better ways to put things.
It's used very wrongly at times and can cause massive issues. Eating disorders in young people can sometimes stem from one poorly thought out, off the cuff, comment. |

That is very true but for myself I have a very active job and I enjoy walks and riding my bike, I eat well but I still look fat and have a baby belly that will never go away apart from having it surgically removed, so I just work with what I have and some people will think it's sexy and some won't but that's what makes the world go round |

No you eat more than you burn.
That's it.
It's not the way you are you are not a perpetual motion machine.
Use myfitnesspal pall and log everything you eat honestly for a week you'll find your probably pushing near 3k cal a day to maintain your size. |

I agree somewhat. Saying someone is fat as an insult is a slur on their lifestyle. I put 9 stone on in a year. Ate everything I could see, drank custard from a carton,3 stodgy meals a day,and I couldn't stop. I craved carbs after being ill for months and not being able to eat. I went down to 7.5 stone. I was ill. After putting it on I found it very difficult to lose,it's gone down and up,down and up,my body has suffered and my knees are fucked. Now,I don't eat that much, but I eat the wrong foods and comfort drink tea with sugar. My lifestyle means I'm not losing weight,I'm fat and thoroughly deserve the name. |

The word Fat can be taken as both an insult and a description depending in what context its used.
I was always A larger man, a divorce and no more good home cooking sorted that out!
I was fat, too much so. I was teased and hurt by it many times.
Now? I wish I'd just laughed with them. |

I have to die of something!
May as we'll be artereoschlerosis or coronary problems or whatever is thrown at me and I'll enjoy my custard slice with a brew!
We all do something that are causing us damage, alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, too much exposure to the sun, feeding ducks in the presence of arm breaking swans!

Let's see.
My GP finds that all my numbers indicate a very fit individual. I can outrun teenage kids, walk for hours (and sometimes do). I don't even like sugary/sweet foods, never been one for lattes and the like. I've examined my calorie intake and just to maintain my current weight I would have to eat a minimum of 5,500 calories per day - which emphatically I do not.
As my GP agrees, we all know someone who eats "junk" food all the time and is thin....and someone else who eats salad leaves once a day and is fat. Everyone's body is different in what it does with the food.
In my case, my metabolism was utterly destroyed by crash diets as a young child in the 70s.

The fact of the matter is, that having a "You're fat!" lobbed at you whether is an almost guaranteed home run if you're looking to make someone feel shitty so is an insult. |

If losing weight were easy, the diet industry would not exist.
if the diet industry worked, it would not exist either.
Serous research (not funded by the food or diet industries) into the causes of obesity and into what human bodies do with food/drink has only been undertaken on the last 15 years or so. And the results generally stand received wisdom on it's head. |

Eating 10 kg of celery sticks per day and gaining weight is a scientific impossibility unless ones' metabolic rate drops to less than 100 kcal; in which case, reducing celery intake to less than the metabolic rate will result in weight loss
However, your GP and you must be, in your case, correct |

Fat is just a word to a big women/man in my opinion
we know what it means and know if we are or arnt!
Life would be boring if we all looked the same and if someone was to try and insult me over my weight the answer is always the same.... My weight should only concern you if I'm sat upon your face;) |

"I also have an active job, eat properly (I cook from ingredients, not packets), use public transport or occasionally a bicycle......and am still fat. Its just the way I am.
Many people say that.
It's never true.
With respect, you do not know me, my level of activity or the foods I cook and eat. "
Thank you for your respect. I don't have to know you.
if calories in exceeds calories out people get fat.
I never saw one fat man in a prisoner of war camp. |

It is what it is and it depends which context the word is used.
I wouldn't meet a fat guy the same as I'm not meeting anyone in my current condition. I've put a lot of fat on since I've been on the pill injection, I'm not getting it topped up again and I'm trying to undo the damage it's done. |

That's true enough, but there is one way to find out. Down load an app like my fitness pal
Log your calorie intake and log the amount of exercise you do. yku can then see it in black and white.
Cos the odd pint of beer here and the odd latte there soon add up
Do not, ever, assume anything about a person's habits by their size. "
If you were put into a strictly controlled experiment where your food was weighed and you were watched at all times, then i might believe you, but as studies have shown people wildly underestimate how many calories they consume, you saying you don't eat the calories you need to maintain your weight, doesn't really convince me.
As to the claim that there are some overweight people who only eat salad leaves and still don't lose weight, unless they have an underlying medical condition which causes weight gain, i find that hard to believe. Is there a peer re_iew study that has shown this to be the case or is it just your GP's opinion?. |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
I haven't read the thread.
Fat is just a word and one I use about myself and others. It's only unkind when the intent is unkind. Fat is not an insult, although I accept it is a loaded word now.

Fat is just a word, but it is the context in which it is used that will determine wheather or not it is being used offensivly.
In most cases it used to demonise people, who for varity of reason they will be larger than average. It is interesting that within swingers descriptions such as BBW, Curvy, Fabulous ect. that seek to protray that fact that many are happy with their own body image. Yet there are many profile will have "not fat" rather "fit only" shows some are indifferent to politly declining other based on thier size. |

"The fact of the matter is, that having a "You're fat!" lobbed at you whether is an almost guaranteed home run if you're looking to make someone feel shitty so is an insult.
I generally reply "Fuck! Thanks for letting me know. I never would have if you hadn't told me!""
Yeah
Or
Thanks I don't own a mirror or look at the numbers on my clothes |

Like everything else, it's just a word.
What I don't like is when a woman says "I'm fat. I wish I was slimmer" while doing nothing about it and eating junk food.
I'm not a fattist
I like my women to have curves . |

Fats just a word
Its how you preceive the word that makes it offensive
If someone says she's/he's fat I don't se that as offensive its just a description no different to saying she's/he's ginger
If you call someone a fat bastard or a ginger cunt then yes its offensive as its being used in a derogatory way
Neither word is offensive in its own right |
