Just found a list of dumb questions on boatbook
There are some real belters there.
If mercury is liquid at room temperature how come it's solid when orbiting the sun?
What dumb questions have you heard? |

Back when I was teaching, these actually happened in my classroom!
Me: "Science is a set of theories. A theory is our "best guess based on the evidence. But we always have to keep testing the theories. For example, a long time ago scientists believed the world was flat."
One year 9 kid: "But Miss, the world IS flat?"
Her classmate: "Course it isn't flat! How do you explain hills and mountains and things?"
When I just stared, open mouthed at them, one said "Miss you think we're thick don't you?"
In another class at the same school:
I was teaching a lesson on the criteria that classify whether something is living or not living. Movement, respiration, growth, excretion, reproduction, etc.
One girl thought cars are alive because they move. Her mate called her stupid. But she seemed to think clouds are alive because they move AND grow.

Nope. 14 year olds. Actually I think it was year 10, not year 9.
They were bottom set though.
An all girl class. I asked what they wanted to do when they left school. It was near a forces base. Several said they wanted to get pregnant by a forces bloke and then marry him (in that order).
I think I wanted to be a hairdresser?

It's MRS GREN. For something to be alive it has to have Movement, Reproduction, Sensitivity, Growth, Respiration, Excretion and Nutrition.
Fire doesn't have sensitivity. It doesn't say ouch if you prod it. More the other way around! |

I very much doubt that a living Polar Bear would say "Ouch" if i prodded it, even kicked it.
Thanks, you've just highlighted why teaching is so difficult. |

I'd say no until they germinate. They are a precursor of life. Same goes for eggs and sperm. |
