Please help!

Where do you put the comma!? Before or after a BUT... Iv seen all kinds of way and I'm confused

Use a comma + a little conjunction (and, but, for, nor, yet, or, so) to connect two independent clauses, as in "He hit the ball well, but he ran toward third base."

A comma should be placed before the word but only if but is at the beginning of an independent clause. I would go for a walk, but for the rain. In this sentence, but is being used to mean except. Because but isn't starting an independent clause, the comma isn't required.

Is the comma in the right place there? Because the 'in case you didn't know' bit could be in () or -- so I dunno how that one works!
