This is a bit of a shocker... Anyone can update to Windows 10, including people with "non genuine" copies, aka pirated versions.

Microsoft elaborated in a statement. "Anyone with a qualified device can upgrade to Window 10, including those with pirated copies of Windows," a company spokesperson said. "We believe customers over time will realize the value of properly licensing Windows and we will make it easy for them to move to legitimate copies

How do you 'qualify' for this? What are the os requirements beforehand

I bet that Microsoft will be moving to an OS subscription model in the next two years.

You'll never own the OS, just rent it. A little like Adobe Creative Cloud Apps.

One of the reasons for this is because profits now come from app sales not from sales of the os. Getting more people onto the same, current version of windows also makes it easier for app designers.

windows 10 is a free upgrade for windows 7 & windows 8 & 8.1 looks like if you have any other windows you will need to buy the ISO & burn it to disk

this is the official Microsoft spec for 10

Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster

•RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)

•Free hard disk space: 16 GB

•Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver

•A Microsoft account and Internet access

the people with a pirate copy will be able to do the upgrade but it will still be a pirate machine

looks like Microsoft is thinking better to give it away or sell it like the did with windows 7 & 8 for £25:00 when it is first release & make a 1,000,000 time £25:00 the sell it to a 100 people at £60:00 to £120:00 & have millions of pirate copies

Apple OS is free because they make more money out of selling you the Hardware were as Microsoft never sold Hardware till now but Microsoft has to compete against all the other makes of Hardware that run windows, Apple only runs on Apple & there the only people that make & sell them

i'm running Win 10 developer preview on my hp laptop seems to be better than 8.1 the start menu is back properly

I don't know why they have an app for ebay that doesn't give you all the "bits" when the website runs better!

" other apps are available" lol

Anyone can sign up to get this you download an "ISO" file then burn it to DVD and install

I upgraded a "Virgin install" so it went ok with no problems I can't say wether an older system would be problem free!

This HP laptop will be running Mac OS X soon (yes you can do this)

your right you can I assume you have looked into doing this & you will know that it is not just as straight forward as it sounds plus it would be beyond most of the people on fab

the only problem most would have is you need a working mac to download the new OS. as i'm responsible for dozens of them at work and have my own i can do this easily. i'm just going to play with this setup though

It's just an advance statement of their plans atm. Windows 10 won't be released for a few months yet. A test version is out but is aimed at IT pros.

I think its a good move, as fewer old crappy pcs will exist, if upgraded, meaning less infected machines that can spread viuses etc.
