Peebles in Scotland. We went camping one year and a few miles before Edinburgh we decided to pitch at the next campsite we came across, which turned out to be Peebles. To begin with there wasn't alot to do and i thought the place was kinda strange and grey stone like. We went out to a pub and it was much like the Slaughtered Lamb pub in American Werewolf in London, as everyone went quiet for a moment and stared at us. I was sure we were going to be burnt as a sacrifice inside a whicker man!
As the night went on i noticed a dead ringer for Cliff Richard (may well have been him) and people kept spontaneously bursting into song mid way through a sentence. This was accompanied by several people who broke off their own conversations and played instruments they had brought along. Then when the song ended they went back to the exact point where they left their conversations! Some guy decided to stand on the bar and recite his new poem which annoyed the hell out of me and a few decided to keep calling me Dave even though it isn't my name.
We left the next day in a hurry and vowed never to go there again. The following year we travelled to Scotland again and made a point of not going to Peebles. We passed the sign for it and continued on down the road for a good few miles to put distance between us. Eventually we spotted a sign for a camp site and took the turn only to find we were back at bloody Peebles again! How? We went miles passed it! Does this place really exist or does it appear only from time to time to claim the souls of weary travellers??? |

Milton Keynes....
I was staying in Watford with work and decided to be dead brave and go to the West End to see a show on my own.
The show was great! I got the train back, fell asleep, ended up in Milton Keynes and it cost me £70 to get back to the hotel!!!

San Sebastian in Spain. Complete dive, and the evil stares the locals gave us didn't help. Didn't realise at the time it was a pro-basque seperatist area. We where only passing through on a Top Gear style drive round europe, so we just got back in the car and left sharpish.
And on that bomb shell, good night. |

Been in certain hotels etc and thought never going back there, as for places, can honestly say none, after all a holiday, break etc is what you make it, regardless of where it is. |

I travelled a bit while in the RAF so have seen some right shitholes:
Goose Green in the Falklands and OMG young Argentinian conscripts died for that???...their cemetry there is a really sad place
Athens, forget the cultural bits, it's a sweaty, dirty, smelly hole (leave it)
Lagos in Nigeria, one big smelly
rubbish dump, only bonus is the beer is cheap!
Rio de Jenerio, lovely beaches, but just soooo scary at night
Bangkok, well certain parts...ohh dead dogs and rubbish in streets, people sitting with knives in bars...ohhhh...TAXI!!!
And in this country, Blackpool has been mentioned and I agree, what an utter shitty down trodden place, which seems to attract shit down trodden people too!!! |
