It's so demoralising. I had some surgery at the end of last summer which has led to me putting on over 10kg in weight. All I want to do is knock it back off again and everything seems to try and stop me.

I was the same from Xmas til mid February, nothing in my legs during my short daily commute.

I did my 3rd road ride of the year on Sunday, 200km audax from Halifax to Lancaster & back - it hurt a bit!

All depends. The tyres/tubes are likely to have perished, if the chain/cassette/chainrings are very rusty then they are past saving.

I would say, check all the bearings in the wheels/bottom bracket/headset and see if they run/turn smoothly. If they do, and the drivetrain isn't rusted into a solid red lump then its probably worth saving as its just cables & tyres etc.

If the bearings, drivetrain, tyres & cables are all shot then that's an expensive fix I'm afraid & it may work out cheaper to buy another one!

Sorry..

Been getting out on my roadbike more recently. Strangely my broken toe at the end of last year stopped me for longer than I expected as I found it hard to put pressure on my foot and clipping in and out. So I did other training instead. Back to it properly now though and servicing all my bikes at the weekend. Going to enter a sportive or two this year to give me a focus for my training. Bring on the light nights !

I was given this advice years ago by Sean Yates, cut down on raiding the fridge, set a few courses out that would take at least two hours with varied terrain.

Ride them frequently and you will notice you will improve. It worked for me when I first started racing, just need to get back into now.

Cannondale Caad8 2300 for training, hand built Harry Quinn for best.

I bought a Smart Electric at the NEC bike show...

Logic was use electric to work and then switch it to regenerative mode on the way back for a work out....

Erm, not exactly worked out like that yet as I'm a lazy bastard

Bike is I work of art though... Ultimate commuter machine

Belt drive, hub gears, hydraulic disc brakes, inbuilt lights, reinforced tyres, etc....

50 mile range n charged at work...result

I'm gonna chip it though to make it faster.

The classics will be interesting this year. It;s a shame Booned is out injured but potentially that will make it more exciting.

Hopefully Stannard will be given joint leadership with Wiggins for Paris-Roubaix else SKY risk screwing up like they did in the vuelta a few years ago.

Het Volk, K-B-K and Strade Bianche have all been cracking races and hopefully that will continue. They also all demonstrated why race radios clearly make for negative racing.

Hmm, just a wee commute to and from work of 8.3 miles each way and nipping down to the boathouse on the weekends. Its quicker than driving and keeps me fit enough for rowing (which is the exercise I actually enjoy )

Had a few days off, recovering from a tooth infection that got a wee bit out of hand. Actually missed it and looking forward to the commute tomorrow.

Lol it's not a joke

I 'justified it' to myself on the grounds that it has a regen mode so that you charge the battery whilst cycling and therefore get a huge workout....

However on about level 2 regen I can't even pedal the damn thing and quickly switch to turbo...

Loads of keen cyclists at work... My mate refuses to call it a bike and refers to it as the moped lol

When the summer arrives (no laughing at the back please ) I love planning a cycle with friends on a Sat morning last year went a few great cycle runs from Glasgow to Loch Lomond and Glasgow to Falkirk then onto Edinburgh.

After all that cycling it then sets you up for a night on the town and by god you feel like you have earned those beers.

E-bikes are an interesting subject.

I can see their worth for those with health problems, & if/when I need one i'll get one in order to keep riding.

However, when able-bodied people are using them to avoid having to actually do some work then I dislike their use. I certainly don't want to see them out on the trails as they have the potential to damage trails in the same manner as motorcycles.

Cycling to me is about being human-powered, about being able to get out and about under your own steam with the sense of satisfaction of doing it yourself plus the joy of physical exercise.

A personal opinion but, if you need the assistance from an E-bike then more power to your elbow. If you are just avoiding pedalling up hills then no, you're not really cycling.

You can get a similar one on you tube which is not quite as good but ok for free.. Take the strava free trial on the premium and see why you think

You can use the rollers too but you need to use your gears more. And be careful when your pushing it lol

I think you have misunderstood.... These are not electric motorbikes and would, therefore, no more damage 'trails' than a mountain bike... They are just electrically assisted cycles.

In the UK it is the law that you must pedal and the max speed is 15mph... Assistance... You can, and do, go faster but are only assisted to 15mph.

And when on regenerative mode they are waaaaaay harder to pedal than any cycle so you could have a massive workout if you want.

I don't lol

I just want to get too and from work with minimal fuss and avoid traffic.... I get plenty of workouts elsewhere...

As an aside the NEC bike show had, I would guess, 1/3 electrics.... Definitely the future.

Keeps cars off the road and is, therefore, a good thing in my book....

I appreciate that there is massive snobbery in cycling... I see it at work with the 'keen' cyclists refusing to use the cycle path causing jams and stress...people on fixies berating those with gears etc... Load of old bollox IMHO ..

Contador to hold the pink jersey all the way to Milan?

Porte and team sky seem to be bang on form at the moment, stage 16 will be the decided, whoever is in pink at the end of that stage will be the winner

Personally I can't see Contador giving up the jersey now. Porte will need to put some time into Contador on the long time trial next week. Can't see Porte taking any time from him on the climbs

I ride to work at least twice a week, but l alternate it with running there

Todays ride wasn't much fun, in the wind & rain, thus it got abbreviated, due to the very gusty nature of the side-wind

Hopefully tomorrow may be better for a ride out (day-off, as working Sunday instead)

"Yeah, after almost 9hrs in the saddle on Sunday my hands were pretty cold!"

I didn't do quite that time on my last long ride (about a fortnight ago)

Wakefield, Denby Dale, 'Sovereign crossroads', New Mills, Holmfirth, HolmeMoss, 'Woodhead', Torside, Glossop

'Snake Pass' (A57), LadyBower reservoir, 'Strines' (bitch of a road, all the way), Penistone, Barnsley, Wakefield

About 85 miles & 5 hours (& a reasonable amount of climbing)

I like to do long leisurely rides with a friend, usually exploring the local lanes, with tow paths and the odd cross country path.

Though my last ride passed along Hurst Street and through the gay village, whilst in tight lycra. Not my route, but my non-fab friend's. It was supposed to be a gentle warm up after my friend's injury but we did 30 odd miles.

Traffic free roads are the best!

I was recently in Berlin for a few months and everything is flat there - and geared towards cyclists - that's what got me back on a bike after so many years!

I'm not sure how well I'm going to get on with it here - as I recently moved and it's very hilly

It's a good thing really I need to burn off all the pies I ate over Xmas!

I've brought myself a Dolan Fxe for winter commuting. Weighs a ton with panniers on it but nice having no transmission to worry about and mudguards keeping my arse dry! 65inch gear is about right, getting back in to spinning at 150rpm on the 3 long descents on my commute is interesting too say the least!

just just go at your own pace, don't push yourself to hard build up gradually! Take

Plenty water stops,! on the hills i take cuts through estates and side streets to break the hills when i can, saves slowing traffic and annoying car drivers though sustrans have some good routes up here using old train lines

And wagon ways etc with art and sculptures along the way, the Derwentside way takes you upto consett as a gradual incline to howngill viaduct (cake n coffee stop at the cafe) the free week all the way back

sustrans sites worth a look for local routes and info

I love riding fixed!

Nothing too steep on my normal route thankfully. 3 longish (for Hertfordshire) climbs that I can comfortably get over, have got over all of them on 90" fixed when I was a lot fitter and used to commute on my track bike occasionally. There is one climb I have to avoid though!

Wasn't much fun

Even with overshoes, & old socks between them & my shoes, my feet were suffering greatly by the top side of Doncaster

I had been thinking of doing a few local events next winter (discovered there were a few events within riding distance this winter), as it would be interesting to see how i go when my focus these days is so much more running based and a I still have a lovely 853 crooss bike. Then I saw the pictures of the nationals and remembered why I packed up!

I remember when Killen was junior doing a local league event, they staggered the start so seniors started a couple of minutes ahead of juniors and vets (hard to believe fields were so small). Killeen came through the entire field and even caught Steve Knight and that was around the time Knighty was national champion - it was an unbelievable ride.

Had a few issues that stopped me riding much last year, but over winter have been doing 3x spin classes a week, back to the gym and on the turbo in the garage. Slowly getting back into it with a few shorter rides as well. Hoping to do a few long rides this year

CX is the reason l started running, l could generally get into top 3rd of my age group, but was losing places in runs

Nowadays, most of my competitive urges are sated by fell-running

I still get wet & filthy!!, but it's a lot cheaper, entries are, but shoes are still £80ish for good Inov8 (Mud-Claw, etc..)

Might try CX again in summer series, l enjoyed the one (return?) race l tried late last year

Just dragged my turbo out from under the stairs to find the resistance knob has broken..

I've got a Scott CX, frame, but only use it on the road.. Am I going to be losing out over a true roadie??

Any help great fully received

Your loses over a true road bike will be minimal, most loses will come from tyres, if you have cx tyres on you will have some rolling resistance if you have normal road tyres them you will be fine,

No, as stated, tyres are biggest issue

I rode to my last CX, & it was quite literally, a drag on the road

Then, l was losing traction at points during race, as l was running higher tyre pressures, for the road

CX bikes generally have a slightly shorter top-tube too, so your position would be more upright than a comparable road-bike

I hate turbo's!

Just done a 30 minute session, 725 calories. Its only a dumb trainer and I don't have a power metre so I tend to work on calories burnt.

I feel a bit wobbly now..

Yup.. Managed to fix mine and thought it wise to have a go.. 80 minutes, sweaty floor, sore **** and wobbly legs too...

No power meter and my heart rate strap is bust.. No idea how hard I'm working.

Can't wait to get out on the road..

Gave mine away years ago, just get out on the road now, whatever the weather

That said, l run if there's enough snow to clog up mudguards, or get the CX bike out, on 'decent' CX tyres
