Found a hand grenade once while putting up a fence in bushy park, by Teddington gate.

We thought it was an old cricket ball at first and was whacking it around with a lump of 4x2.till someone realised it was metal.

Bomb squad called and removed presume it was destroyed.

Still wake up in cold sweats to this day when I remember it.

That's what you call a near miss.

It was close to an old ww2 pillbox.

On the famous site where the bouncing bomb was tested in the tank's at the npl.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

That makes one of them an exploded bomb.

I'm always amazed that these bombs keep turning up in this country after so many years.

In the battlefields of the Great War they call this the iron harvest. There's literally millions of shells unexploded and plenty turn up when farming or building.

Also there's known to be a mine that's 'missing' with between 30,000-50,000lbs of amanol. Still live. The last lost one went in 1956 after the ground was struck by lightning.

I used to live on a farm that was partly used as a firing range for the Canadians during ww2. My father used to very often plough up 6" mortars and the bomb disposal were called out to carry out a controlled explosion. Talking to one of the disposal men one day he asked what would happen if one exploded as he ploughed it up?

The answer....'I shouldn't worry mate..you won't know anything about it!'

Titz Towers, North Notts

When we were out on Salisbury Plain one night we were kicking a cobble about that turned out to be a mortar round.

There's a WWII ammo supply boat called the SS Montgomery shipwrecked not far from me, apparently if or when it goes kaboom half of London will disappear and I'll have a beachfront property.
