The select commons committee has confirmed that GCHQ collects "bulk data" from various sources but only views a small amount of the collected data. In a free society is it democratic to have the security services collecting private data? |

Our only concern is if they read our emails and texts they will be too busy wanking to hunt down IS supporters.
Collect it if they want; see if we care. ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

Everyone needs to be VERY clear, none of this is about our protection or terrorism, that is just a useful bogeyman to scare people into accepting it. It is all about government agendas being driven by large corporations who demand the right to snoop into everything we do in order to make more money.
From Ed Snowdon etc it is now clear every byte of data, every call, every text is monitored, recorded and archived and yes, they do search the data for criminal activity but it is also used for a whole lot more that most people would find unnacceptable.
As an example, the government happily sells our medical data to whoever wants it. They say it's depersonalised so it's safe, except one of the first customers were the insurance companies who cross referenced it and identified about 70-80% of the people so now when you want life insurance etc, they know a *lot* more about you than you think. |

Why do you think the adverts say... No medical required!
Some people care passionately about this, I'm one of them, some people couldn't give a shit... They don't give a shit about anything mind unless they cancel corrie?... And some even think it's a good idea... As long as there saving us from those evils

Then when all the evidence has been collected and is used against you for transgressing laws retrospectively, you can offer up a plea bargain that you gave them that evidence of your own free will. Too many people with a naive trust in governments.
Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely? And you gave them the power willingly. |

Indeed. I'm quite vocal about these issues, write to my MP etc. I'm fully expecting that one day they'll decide to pass a law that criticising the govt will be made illegal and they'll start rounding up all the people that had been objecting to all this destruction of freedoms and civil liberties. |

Its a very old method. Let people do things, let it be known that they know we have done them, then change the law forbidding it. Then start to look at peoples histories.
All totalitarian governments use this method, and we are down that path, as is the U.S and a lot if not all of Europe.
How much to buy Anthrax island do you reckon? We could club together and call it fab island. We wouldn't need the t'interweb either as we would be falling over one another. |

What does collection of data have to do with democracy?
Why does everyone believe we have the right to be killed because of deliberate self-imposed blindness. Sounds a bit like the NRA's line on all Americans having the right to be shot in gun crime... |

Unfortunately they already do as I and many other environmentalist or protesters will tell you.
You go straight on a register they call domestic terrorist (I shit you not) once on there, they can collect personal information, watch you, observe your friends and family, find out what you do for a living, record your car registration plate, your income... All because you protested a government scheme like fracking, benefit cuts, armed services buildings like menwith hill .
Is really quite scary what power they have over you when in all actuality should be the other way round![](/icons/s/wink.gif) |

And there was me thinking that with profiling of death rates by postcode and more sophisticated use of mathematical modelling insurance actuaries are able to predict trends life expectancy trends and design life insurance policies that are not only self financing but highly profitable.
Not everything is driven by conspiracy.

"If your not doing anything wrong, you've got nothing to worry about."
What your doing now might not be classed as wrong. Then the law changes. Then they look at your activities on a site like this and your arrested as a "deviant". We are giving them the tools to rule over aspect of our lives. Apparently its for our own good. Yeah right. |

Just because you accept the infringement on your liberty doesn't mean others also should.
Privacy should be a core civil right, it simply isn't any more and people are slowly realising this.
Our system should be about protecting the freedoms, privacy and rights of the individual as well as the whole. Actions are sadly speaking louder than words. |

Oh my God. GCHQ, one of the most sophisticated intelligence gathering and spying organisations in the world..... Is spying on people!!!!!
The hint is that they're a government agency created to spy on people in order to try and protect this country and its people. Get a life if you're going to get indignant at them doing what they were created to do.
As for holding up Edward Snowdon as a hero. Am I the only one who thinks it's ironic that in order to stay out of jail he's hiding under Russia and Vladimir Putins coat tails. |

They can spy. They don't need to spy on the whole population. As the people that supposedly are hell bent on killing us all etc, are aware there electronic communications are bring monitored , don't you think they might turn to using the more old fashioned methods of communications? How are gchq going to steam open everyone's mail (and only keep the dodgy stuff)? |

There's no spying in GCHQ it's in the name.
The government is legally bound not to spy or collect information on its citizens without a required level of suspicion in an involvement in ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES.
in the USA they have there freedoms protected by legal document, what they were doing broke the constitution and even though Snowdon restricted any sensitive information and only released the bits that affected the general population, instead of being heralded as the hero he is, he faced a life imprisonment!.
Which is why the only country able and willing to go against the all powerful us government was Russia, he really had no option. |
