Top gear is the BBC's biggest selling programme. It earns them millions.
Clarkson and his irreverent comments are the backbone of the show. He may be an arrogant shit but he is very entertaining and right for the show.
You only have to watch Top Gear USA to see how important the dynamic between Clarkson, Hammond and May is to the show. TGUSA tries but cannot match the uk show's entertainment value.
A producer is there to manage the show, including Clarkson. If he cannot do that; get another producer. After all, when was the last time you watched a show because you liked the producer? |

People forget that TG was dropped by the Beeb. The production team took the whole show to channel 5 and remade it calling it 5th Gear.
Clarkson and producer Andy Wilman came up with the current format which is a worldwide success |

"Top Gear is a BBC trademark licensed all over the world. The BBC make a profit on that"
The BBC only owned 50% of the production company, Clarkson 30% and producer Andy Wilman 20%, then the BBC bought out the 50% it didn't own for an estimated £15m and secured Clarkson & Wilman on a 3 year contract, which expires this year, so that's a hell of a lot of sales to make before the BBC makes back it's investment. My guess is that either having made his money out of the brand Clarkson wants out or he's on an ego trip seeing how far he can push his luck before the BBC say enough is enough. |

It's interesting how people have opinions about people, good or bad, based on perception. I know clarkson and have worked with him. He is a nice bloke. He can be outspoken but that's what makes him entertaining for the media. What annoys me is the British obsession with trying to crucify anyone who becomes famous. |

The show is very tired and the spark between the presenters feels to scripted now. Clarkson is a caricature of himself with Hammond and May playing the people they were 6/7 years ago, the spontaneity has gone. Guy Martins TV shows are far far better |

I think it's tired and running out of steam. Most weeks it is just a variation on a theme already done. Sometimes it is good, but sometimes not.

Spot on
To achieve success and/or wealth through ability or good fortune seems to be just a reason to be sneered at.
There is a lot about the USA that I dont like, but I do like how they generally celebrate success. Almost everyone still has great ambition and a will to be successful at whatever they do. |

Can't stand him. He's a xenophobic, elitist twat and the BBC pander to him because he's their cash cow.
What kind of message do they send when they constantly excuse his behaviour? I guarantee that the fallout from this will be that he's issued a 'final-final-final-final warning'. |

Me too. I tend to tune out of the serious car bits, the bits about cars too expensive for me to imagine, driven at speeds I'll never be able to legally reach,on roads I'll never see. Or at least if I were to drive on them, I'd want ro pootle along a bit slower so I could admire the view!

The show would be nothing without Clarkson. Millions will switch off as Hamster and May will never maintain viewing figures.

"It's interesting how people have opinions about people, good or bad, based on perception. I know clarkson and have worked with him. He is a nice bloke. He can be outspoken but that's what makes him entertaining for the media. What annoys me is the British obsession with trying to crucify anyone who becomes famous. "
He must have needed something from you.
Clarkson is not a nice bloke in the slightest. He's nice to people he sees as important to him in some way. He doesn't see many people as important to him. |

Latest rumours state all of the remaining episodes in this series now suspended.
Any new series will require renegotiation anyway from what Ziggy said earlier, and Beeb under pressure to reduce salaries of top stars.
So, looks like a lot of posturing...

Watched TG for years.....best car not motoring show ....ever. Its fun fantasy and slap stick....grown up kids at play.
Clarkson IS the show. He is clever with a feel for what works and a good writer. He is playing with everyone.....public and BBC. If you really dont like him, ignore him. But recognize real TV talent and dont mix that up with his public persona ! |

I wonder which politically correct idiot decided to make public a private row in order to further the cause of removing Clarkson from the BBC? I wonder if they will be held to account for putting in jeopardy the future of the BBC's most valuable current franchise? I further wonder how many of the fantastic natural history and science programs will be lost if Clarkson tells the Beeb to stick it and walks taking his £175 million a year income with him?
Finally I wonder if any of the self important overblown leaches at the top of the Beeb will be held to account for this fiasco?
Or is this nothing more than a very expensive smoke screen to distract from a soon to be announced BBC climbdown over CaMoron's refusal to take part in election debates? |

Top Gear will just continue on another channel. The format is successful and the show does not need the BBC.
The Lefties who run the BBC have had the daggers out for Clarkson for ages. Time will tell if this comes to bite them on their arses financially. |

But if the reports are true that he hit the producer how can that be condoned? Racism being brushed under the carpet with a 'this is his final warning' followed by another 'final' warning for violence? Mammon allowing any level of bad, unacceptable behaviour?

While one cannot condone violence, the Beeb should have ensured that the producer was one who could manage talent and let it flourish, rather than ending in this mess. At a time when the license fee is on the political agenda, to risk losing a multi-million pound global franchise is simply madness. |

Lets correct a couple of points...
Firstly Clarkson and his partners sold all rights to Top Gear in 2012...
Prior to that there were no real problems with Top Gear or with Clarkson. Since then the BBC has changed the production team and it is the production team that ordered Clarkson to do the eni meini minei mo piece to camera although Clarkson objected, it was the same production team got the cars that were taken to Argentina... Funny how Clarkson was blamed for both incidents... Now apparently he has hit a producer... I wonder what they were attempting to force him to do now?
After spending a little time thinking about the history of Clarksons fall from grace I have come to the conclusion that somebody has decided that Clarkson is to be dispensed with and rather than let him go they have decided to destroy his image because they are afraid that if he leaves clean he and the other two buffoons will be snapped up by one of the other channels and the Beeb will be left with a worthless title rather than a worldwide financial success. |

You can't just go to another channel the bbc have copyright on topgear.
The BBC makes most of its money from top gear the franchise... Not top gear UK.

We don't actually know what's gone on, except the official fracas line, please try not to get hung up between the Jeremy clarkson TV persona and the real person, their not the same thing... It's called acting and television.. It's a fucking entertainment show.. To entertain!! |

Top Gear UK really is where the value is though, it is broadcast all over the world. While other countries do use the name with local presenters, it is nowhere near as valuable as the UK version. |

He's in a fortunate position, the beeb need him more than he needs them. They need to make their money back, they don't stand a cat in hells chance if he goes. I like the bloke, he's part of a team that makes the show entertaining. People moan about the cost of production out of the licence fee, but it generates money and keeps pulling numbers. Don't hear anyone complaining how much it costs to stick a camera in a jungle for a year, just so David Attenborough can do a 10 second clip about a birds egg hatching |

Unfortunately like everything else within the BBC, politics have a very large influence. TG is not a politically correct show and does not appeal to many of the demographic sub sub cultures that have powerful lobbying arms. It does appeal to great masses of the general public all over the world who find it extremely entertaining.
It would be easy to go back to the original format with Chris Goffey, William Woolard and another rally jacket wearing pipe smoker comparing the boot capacity of Nissan Micras and Skoda Yetis. All very worthy but dull and boring and nobody would watch it |

This is what does my head in about that snob, - how can he own anything of TG? Public money has always paid for the show, so surely it's entirely owned by the public?
The huge profits that the programme makes should be used to cut the license fee, not line Clarkson's pockets, - in his very own words, he should be lined up & shot (after being charged with assault of course)! |

The BBC may own the title, and the rights to the completed shows, but he had a lot of creative input. The BBC don't own that, so a move to ITV as 'Topper Gearstick' is possible, just as the BBC could try to continue Top Gear with three other presenters. (May and Hammond would stick with Jeremy)
The really interesting part will be whether we learn the truth about whose idea it was to take the number plate to Argentina, and the story behind filming a succession of clips of Eeny, Meany, with various endings, seemingly to see how far they could push it, and then, when he didn't play ball and say the actual word clearly, who took the decision to release the clip anyway. And why.
Oh, and also, who decided to deliberately build a bridge on an angle, just for one other slightly racist punchline. There is a lot of premeditated unpleastant undercurrents on that programme, and surely that has to be more down to the producer than the presenters? |

"I love how everyone passes judgement yet no one knows a fact. I wonder If it's not as bad as it's being made out by his fellow presenters. Am sure that's why the BBC are investigating. I wish people would not jump the gun. I would hate to be in court with some if the views being expressed in the social media. Some even want him banned from TV
completely. I wish we held PMs to the same standard. "
I personally saw his remarks on tv, with racist overtones , no denying that - & yes, he should have been banned from tv along with the producer. Imo of course |
