Tips for removing seized nuts on a toilet seat
Jump to: Newest in thread
I need to replace a toilet seat but both nuts are rusted and seized ..Any good tips for removing them or should I attempt to cut off the remainder of the bolt with a hacksaw . Had also thought of trying to sand off the rust |

"The thread screws into the toilet seat as well, have you tried unscrewing if from the top out of the seat rather than taking the nut off " . Thanks for the advice . The top is badly rusted as well. I have removed the remainder of the plastic and will see if I can get sufficient grip to turn

Good point . I did not want to use too much force in case I marked the toilet bowl.

"dont smash the old fittings i have had visions of reading a thread later 'how to replace a loo' " . On this occasion I have decided to be gentle . Been out in the garden all day so about to start now . It is a lovely job having your head next to and under the toilet bowl.

Thanks for all the advice . I tried to get all the rust off the heads but could not slot the screw driver in. I decided to use mole grips and a pair of pliers and managed to snap and release the first one. The second one would not snap but twisting in released a lot of dirt / debris and it was possible to pull the entire bolt through the hole . Excellent advice from all the fab members who posted and it is much appreciated . I will need to shower and wash now . It is not my favourite job working under the toilet . |

"If they are metal nuts - no pun intended.
A pair of mole grips solve all problems
Chuck on some WD40 to. "
Had to remove the horse shoe fixing which holds the kitchen sink taps in place on a job last week. Totally rusted and seized. WD40 worked wonders |
