Having watched today's news, and last nights question time a scary scenario rears its head!
SNP will get a landslide in Scotland.... So no chance of Labour getting overall majority.
BUT if enough people vote labour in England they may be the largest single party.......and will rule with SNP backing (formal coalition or not....it doesn't matter). The nationalist tail will no doubt wag the labour dog.
So will a labour vote in England lead to Westminster being ruled by Edinburgh? What is the alternative? Would English people be happy with this.....I figure the Scots would be! |

As a scot, and an SNP voter, I don't believe that Scottish MP's should only vote on Scottish matters. However , it raises a wry smile, when the "thing" of SNP being in a coalation and in power.....you get a lot of our English neighbours terrified at the prospect. For many years Scotland was governed by a party we didn't vote for. I don't think that an SNP coalition would be such a bad thing, as at least the SNP is not the usual bunch of self serving, professional , expense grabbing politicians, who have made a total mess of Great Britain !! |

Yes, I have a problem with the fact that a Party that is hell bent on breaking up this country will hold the balance of power in the country. |

I believe Alec Salmond (yes, rather than Nicola Sturgeon as he is the one standing for parliament) will be the king-maker in this election. Regardless of the other votes.
Vote as you wish too; stick to your principles; vote for the MP you want. Tactical voting gets us all a government no one wants and MPs who concentrate on the attack rather than their job.

Of course Scottish MPs shouldn't vote on English matters. Imagine the outcry if English MPs voted on Scottish matters. |

Any part of the UK can have free prescriptions, tuition fees etc but you have to accept other stuff will have to be sacrificed.

I'm not too sure the SNP will get a landslide victory, but they'll certainly have an increase in SNP MP numbers. I have no problem with that.
I'm in two minds about Scottish MPs not voting on English matters. It doesn't bother me either way.
There's been a lot of talk about tactical voting to keep the SNP out in our FPTP system but I think all this does is allow political parties to take votes for granted.
It'll be interesting to see what news coverage there is of the SNP on the leadup to the election, considering what we saw during the referendum. |

because for example they have paid for it but cutting the 16-18 grants higher than the rest of the uk...
if they are prepared to do it but it means other services aren't as good... they can always vote them out at the next scottish elections.... |

Umm Wales had free prescriptions 4 years before Scotland did, sure Northern Ireland had free prescriptions before Scotland as well. I know here in Wales they've been free since 2007.
When discussing things can people remember that England does not make up the whole of the UK. Fucking every time anything is mentioned it's always England this England that. |

Read an article in a newspaper that said Labour and the Tories are both looking to go it alone and form a minority government in May (whichever one of them gets the most MP's). Then we may have to have another election in the autumn. |

Plus England seems to be being left out with its own parliament/assembly. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have theirs, what about England? English votes for English laws? |

Hello Dick Sharpe,
" For many years Scotland was governed by a party we didn't vote for."
I don't think that is true, please don't isolate Scotland. Many regions of the U.K. are governed by a party they didn't vote for. That is how it works but that doesn't mean that you are governed by someone you didn't want only that that is how the balance of power worked out. There will have been many in Scotland who voted for the party you feel were not voted for.
Just understand how the system works and get rid of the big chip on the shoulder some of you carry.
Alec.

Yeah, I didn't say 'regional assemblies', fuck that. I do not in any way support England being broken up and divided into regions. Keep England united. |

I think a lot of people living in England, including myself, think that England is already a country of fractured regions with most attention going to one region in particular.
I'd support regional councils to distrubte money, plan services and contain their portion of the civil service. |

Yeah, great idea. Create more of a divide between English regions, why don't you? Tell you what, why not enter English counties into World Cups instead of a united England team? |

That's how the MSM what you to think. That's not how it will be. Scots Mps (snp anyhoo) won't vote on english matters (they don't vote presently on them - again despite what the press tell you) - unless it has a detrimental affect on our budget up here.
It's going to be an interesting election for sure. And I don't think 50odd snp MPs should be a worry for the rest of the UK. Amazing the amount of tweets from rUK voters last night wishing there were SNP candidates to vote for in their areas.

England, like the UK, probably does have attention focussed more on certain areas. But those areas are the ones that are most heavely populated. So its fair.
It certainly wouldn't be fair to spread the attention and money equally by area. Because the spending wouldn't be distributed eaqually per person.
I do support the idea of an English parliament, it would certainly solve many problems. The fact that Scotland Wales and northern Ireland can control certain things in their parliaments/assemblies while England is forced to allow them all a vote in the UK parliament.
An English parliament so we are equal to the minor countries shouldñln't be something yet to be achieved. |

There is no comparison to be made between those and England, they're not similar in terms of population, infrastructure, income inequality, wealth disparity, lack of housing etc etc. |

Current funding distributions are far from fair, funding is nowhere NEAR being distributed on an equal basis according to proportion of the population. There are good arguments for why the South East should continue to be the focus of attention and investment (many of which I agree with) but there's a massive North-South divide when it comes to funding on a per head of population basis. |

i wish when the decision was offered to us in the north east as a regional assembly then it wasn't at such an apathethic time in politics... there are decisions they we could make with north east money that would help the north east hugely...
for example tyne and wear metro extensions to blyth/ashington... and washington... with extensions to the teeside
if the vote every happened again, i am sure the decision would be different

Why this great need to further widen the north/south divide? Why not campaign for an English parliament based somewhere central like Birmingham so it separates itself from the UK government in Westminster and also isn't so southern-based? |

The vote at that time was for no real powers whatsoever, I don't think it was just apathy that led to the overwhelming no vote. Even if we had a North East assembly now, it would be powerless to effect any of the projects you speak of without the opportunity of funding for it. The vote then never gave any assurance of funding, so I don't believe we'd be in any better position than we are now. |

How would regional devolution widen it? It's about developing the economies of the city regions outside London which are held back by lack of investment and the current decision making processes which are so heavily skewed towards the capital. |

Because it would be a total waste of money.
82% of MPs represent England, therefore if an English parliament came into existance it would be beyond wasteful to not have it made up of existing MPs where they currently sit (Westminster).
N.Ireland already had Stormont and Wales and Scotland had to have theirs built as they had no where to house their legislatures. |

An English parliament would be completely separate from the UK government, therefore there would be no 'decision-making heavily skewed towards the capital'. |

There would be. The stuff I'm talking about is where decision making is already on an England-only basis, Scotland, NI and Wales already have responsibility for their own. Transport investment, infrastructure funding, skills funding, local government revenue support, funding for the English National Concessionary Travel scheme....I could go on. Regional devolution isn't a panacea but it's at least giving other areas a shot at being able to grow their regional economies not just be dependent on Whitehall's misleading distribution formulae. |

How would regional devolution widen it? It's about developing the economies of the city regions outside London which are held back by lack of investment and the current decision making processes which are so heavily skewed towards the capital.
An English parliament would be completely separate from the UK government, therefore there would be no 'decision-making heavily skewed towards the capital'.
Why not just move to federalise the UK and that sorts out your problem? "
I am all for federalism. |

My two bobs worth is.... After dealing with a quite a few local councils on various environmental things, I'd actually say there more bent than Westminster!.
It don't matter how you break up government or redistribute power, unless you can introduce complete transparency all you'll be doing is doubling the amount of corruption. |

" I love the word english, If your lucky You might hear it on st georges day Normally. "
I know, for all the fuss the Scots make about Andy Murray being called British when he wins and Scottish when he loses,at least he gets called Scottish. She. Was the last time lewis Hamilton was called English, or Jenson Button, Bradley Wiggins, Steve Redgrave? All called British all the time.
Its a small annoyance but illustrates how we are taken advantage if by by the rest of the UK and rather undervalued
But I digress. |

Absolutely spot-on. Scottish, Welsh and Irish people are ALWAYS recognised for their nationalities, yet being English is apparently something to be ashamed of because it never seems to be recognised. I am only recognised British by my passport, as far as I'm concerned I am, always have been and always will be English. |

"Having watched today's news, and last nights question time a scary scenario rears its head!
B
Cybernats on the loose again, making stuff up to try to raise their spirits after the crushing defeat last Sept."

"As a scot, and an SNP voter, I don't believe that Scottish MP's should only vote on Scottish matters. " Alex Salmond....retires as an MP takes the 60k payoff and then announces he is standing at the next election....no mention of paying back the money. Shit opportunist. I wish Scotland had voted for devolution as Labour would be finished. |

"I believe Alec Salmond (yes, rather than Nicola Sturgeon as he is the one standing for parliament) will be the king-maker in this election. Regardless of the other votes.
Vote as you wish too; stick to your principles; vote for the MP you want. Tactical voting gets us all a government no one wants and MPs who concentrate on the attack rather than their job.
"
I disagree, it would be electoral poison for the SNP to enter coalition with labour, so leaving us with a minority tory government

With regard to us being run by Scotland should Labour win the election.
It seems to have been completely forgotten that Scotland recently held a referendum on an independent Scotland and the Scottish people voted against independence to govern themselves.
By voting against independence they therefore voted to remain as part of Great Britain and to continue to be governed by Westminister and not Edinburgh.
So I find the ops post that we will be governed by Scotland should labour win the election a bit bizzare.
Even if the ops statement was correct which it isn't, well I would not argue against free university fees, free prescriptions, and free parking

It has been mooted this morning that the main parties form a 'grand coalition' in order to keep the SNP out of national govt.
I see problems arising here, if the SNP become a large enough group in Westminster yet are manoeuvred out of govt then Scotland may again demand independence.
On the other hand, if the SNP gain membership of a UK govt then the other UK peoples may well feel they are being 'ruled' by a party they didn't have the opportunity to vote for.
Either way this could accelerate the break up of the UK, which would be a win for the SNP.
Personally speaking I would be happy for Scotland to leave the UK, or even for the complete dissolution of the UK but I also understand I'm in a minority on this - at the moment. |

I have to say personally, I think that the "Party System" is not really that democratic. The idea that the members of each party go into a locked room and someone tells them which way to vote just seems wrong.
I'd much rather see a system where each MP is independent and votes how they believe their constituents want them to vote.
The only issue then would be no single individual in charge. |

It doesn't matter which party wins nothing ever really changes, whichever party is in power they blame past governments for all the issues, Staunch Tory voters would like the minimum wage scrapped where Labour supporters want unsustainable wage rises.
All make promises regarding the NHS, Education, Pensions and so on, when they get in they always say cant do it during this parliament will have to wait until bnext one and trying to get re-elected straight away.
The current political system is crap, Party politics is all about Class and not about what is best for the country as a whole. |

Scotland didnt demand independence. The SNP demanded independence, and lost the vote. |

i think what we will end up with as a labour-lib dem minority government where they will work with the 2/3 green mp's and plaid... but will not work with the SNP..
that will be interesting because you then cause the SNP to either abstain of all english matters... or vote with the tories which will backfire in scotland..... |

The SNP didn't demand independence, they demanded a referendum. |

"Does that mean we'll get free prescriptions and tuition fees to?
Any part of the UK can have free prescriptions, tuition fees etc but you have to accept other stuff will have to be sacrificed.
How does Scotland afford it?
Umm Wales had free prescriptions 4 years before Scotland did, sure Northern Ireland had free prescriptions before Scotland as well. I know here in Wales they've been free since 2007.
When discussing things can people remember that England does not make up the whole of the UK. Fucking every time anything is mentioned it's always England this England that. "

"With regard to us being run by Scotland should Labour win the election.
"
UKIP want to introduce free parking back into town centres, would help many town centre shops who are seeing decline in trade year after year, as more people switch to out of town shopping centres with free parking. |

"I have to say personally, I think that the "Party System" is not really that democratic. The idea that the members of each party go into a locked room and someone tells them which way to vote just seems wrong.
I'd much rather see a system where each MP is independent and votes how they believe their constituents want them to vote.
The only issue then would be no single individual in charge."
Its true Tory and Labour MP's are ruled by whips in parliament and told how to vote in the commons. UKIP on the other hand are against the use of whips in government, they would be allowed to vote how they like on an individual basis. |

"Plenty of Scots in England and Plenty of English in Scotland so why should it be a problem? The more I think about it the more I kind of like the idea."
I agree and although I have been a long time Labour supporter I see the SNP working well in Scotland, getting rid of the bedroom tax, free prescriptions, no bridge tolls, generally Scotland has become a good fair place to live under SNP rule; I always thought I was a hardened union & labour voter but in Scotland Labour has lost their way as has Miliband in Westminster, I must say I will vote SNP from now on and factually, I bet the SNP would run the whole of the UK much better and much fairer than any other UK party.

One last thing anyone here 50 years of age or under better look now into your state pension if your company has contracted you out of the second tear as you will not be getting £144 per week, you will find out at pension age its more likely to be £25, The tory government has sneaked in new rules |

"I think a lot of people living in England, including myself, think that England is already a country of fractured regions with most attention going to one region in particular.
I'd support regional councils to distrubte money, plan services and contain their portion of the civil service.
Yeah, great idea. Create more of a divide between English regions, why don't you? Tell you what, why not enter English counties into World Cups instead of a united England team?"
Havnt they already done that? Just don't think Wales, NI and Scotland just don't do well |

I don't think many non-Scotland based voters have a problem if people vote for the SNP, I think it is the fact that they will not have had the opportunity to vote for them yet potentially find them in govt.
You may not want to vote tory, but at least they will stand for election in Scottish constituencies, the SNP will have no candidates in English constituencies yet they may be able to impose policy on those places.
Regardless of the policy its not even vaguely democratic.
How would Scottish voters feel about a Scots administration being held in place by Ulster Unionist politicians for example? Its the same thing in principle. |

"Surely it's better to have all the uk governed by the consent of more of the people North and south of the border than English Tories dictating policy in Scotland "
Only if all the electorate get an opportunity to vote (or not) for those parties. Not having the opportunity to to vote for a set of policies & then having them imposed is not democracy. |

It strikes me as being a bit odd :
If the electorate of Scotland shun Labour and vote SNP they may likley get get run by a Labour minority government from Wetsminster. |

not odd at all, we have seen years and years if not decades of lies and deceit from Labour, exact same as Tories;
SNP have a proven history of standing up for Scotland and supporting the people of Scotland, that is reason enough to continue voting for them, I walked away from Labour many years ago |

For me - the whole Scottish thing left a very bad taste - personally don't give 2 hoots for them anymore - and certainly won't ever visit their country again after their patently ant-English stance came out loud and clear.
Re-build Hadrian's Wall - give em their independence and let's see how they prosper. And nor should Scottish MP's EVER be allowed tovote on English matters. |

But is it not the case that Sturgeon has already made clear she would only support Labour in a coalition at Westmeinster. Thus you will be on the receiving end of Labour policies, however much you dislike them or indeed however little they have ever done for you.
Nice to read of the Dundee labour candidate/party refusing Blairs blood money campaign donation.

So Labour, according to you, are 'hated for siding with the Tories' yet Better Together had existed for a couple of years? People had plenty of time to 'blame' Labour yet the No campaign still won a resounding victory.
Yes, Labour still has Socialist principles. |

Ah but, does Labour have Socialist Principals?
Or have done since 1997?
My £0.02 says not.
Was there a specific time when NuLabour became old Labour again?
