Just one of those age old misconceptions. I think some found that it looked cheap to have a tattoo on the bottom of your Back so named it a tramp stamp.

I think tattoos on women look hideous: yet to see one that looks tasteful, so you can imagine how I feel when I see my daughters: they have a fine collection including "tramp stamps".

My eldest wore a bolero over her wedding dress to hide her shoulder to shoulder one. They know I don't like them but their bodies are their own.

The only comment I've made is "to think of the money and hours I spent rubbing Johnson & Johnson baby lotion, cocoa butter and olive oil onto your skin for you to ruin it with ink!"

This is met with "ooooh mum!"

Well I never new this .."tramp stamp" was a tattoo showing the 'ownership' of a prostitute (mainly latin american). Each pimp would have his own picture, abutterfly, a Chinese symbol, a snake, etc, usually pretty small but somewhere obvious so that competing pimps would know who each girl 'belonged to' and wouldn't try to steal them away. I think I like it even more now . lol

Not got a tattoo, and never been remotely tempted. Think they look fine on others who choose to, especially original, well executed ones. Think the tramp stamp moniker came from the proliferation of people who chose the lower back as an area to display a tattoo, whist often wearing low rise, revealing trousers/jeans. Just another sexist saying really as I don't know the equivalent for a male

Women's lower backs are often viewed by people as an erotic body part, leading to the association of lower-back tattoos with sexuality. Lower-back tattoos are also perceived as an indication of promiscuity by some, possibly owing to media portrayals of women with tattoos. A 2011 study of media stereotypes criticized media portrayals of lower-back tattoos, arguing that they are unfairly cast as a symbol of promiscuity.

Another way of putting women down as you don't see many men with them. I think that's one of the sexiest places a woman can have a tattoo. I'm not overly fond of heavily tattooed women where they have random, badly drawn ones dotted everywhere. They probably mean something to them though. I'm too much of a coward with an old,fat body to have any

I don't have a "tramp stamp" but I have a few others.

I love my ink, each tells a story and means a lot to me and I'm sure I will add more as time goes.

Tattoos don't define a person whether you have them or not and some of the nicest damn people I have met have been covered in them.

It's an individual choice, if your tattooed great, if your not great. Just be happy in your own skin I say!

I like the body art kind. A woman at my aquarobics class had roses,at least half her body was covered. They were really colourful and very well drawn. She had an arm sleeve and almost a whole leg covered. She was walking art

Tattoo artists didn't like doing them, they like their work to look good and in their opinion most tramp stamps don't look good. Same way they hate doing the same tattoos over and over, and boring stuff that become fashionable. So they gave it a derogatory name. Just them bitching a bit about their job really and trying to discourage people from having them.

Obviously not all artists call them this but that's how it began.

Reply privately, Reply in forum +quote or View forums list

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

PS many artists charge more for work they hate doing, and charge less for work they love doing. To promote their own job satisfaction. They do quote by the hour, but if they don't wanna do a tattoo they will over-quote the amount of time they'll do on it.

I'm in two camps here,,,,,,,,,I really like some tattoos, and some I thing are laughable, I find the old skin head tats cool along with old rockabilly ones to. Personally though I dont think I could have any,,,,,,because I wouldn't be able to make up my mind, but i also want to be different now by not having one,,,,,, I think a tattoo on a woman,,,,,can look ok but I have to say I prefer a woman without,,,,,,,,the woman's body is a gorgeous thing, why spoil it and the lower back tattoo now I think shows a little lack of imagination, ultimately, it's your body, if you want it, go for it,,,,,,,These are just views, don't shoot me,

The name Tramp Stamp came from the misconception that any female who would allow a male tatooist (there were very few female tatooists around at the time) to tattoo her so close to her bum must be easy game.

That was in the days when tatoos were only on servicemen, convicts and undesirables.

Things have chaged and now they are far more socially acceptable
