had to interview a young guy for a job at or today and part of the interview is a spelling test of 20 words. The poor lad only got 1 right

i cannot believe that someone has managed to get through school etc cannot spell words such as receipt, available, query etc

i was gonna post a spelling bee thread but soon realised that wouldn't work cos i'd have to type the word i wanted you to spell its been a looooooong day

I know some very well qualified people that cant spell. How many on here would be able to spell if you took spell checkers away. Just cause someone cant spell doesnt mean anything

I could actually.

I'm 50 tomorrow went to primary school that had spelling test every Friday. Attended local comprehensive where my English teacher Mrs Laing was very strict.

I'm of a generation where spell checker and predictive text is still new. I paid attention in class and on the rare occasion I happen across a word I don't know I look it up!

Strange I know, but I can also add, subtract, work out percentages, square roots et al without the aid of a calculator.

I just think it sad that after spending a fortune on the education system our children are leaving school not fit for the world of work!

We should be up in arms not say in effect "so what!"

I said how many? I wasnt talking about you or anyone else individually, im assuming there are lots of people on here who have perfect spelling as mine was once. Ive never used a calculator all my maths i do in my head, thats how i grew up. Unfortunatly and sad as it may be the education system isnt the same as it has been. They have computers, they have spell checkers and they have calculaters, what i was trying to point out was as sad as it may seem this lad isnt one on his own. We all know what a wonderful education you had, your always telling us. For some they havent been so fortunate. This lad sounds a trier, he obviously had made some impression to get as far as an interview, lets hope he goes to some kind of education support to better his self.

Some are genuinely highly intelligent but dyslexic people with a specific inability in spelling - others perhaps have not learnt what they should have learnt. I used to think in conventional terms, too until I realised that in the age of advancing IT and software it will only be a matter of time until it wont matter anymore as all pc will have voice recognition and spell correction - it is just a matter of time until the artificial intelligence makes the skill a lovely bonus, not a necessity for job interviews. Glad to say so for all dyslexia sufferers - at least the discrimination will stop.

When i taught adult literacy i taught to two different groups, one was on a one to one basis with people and one was in a prison. The out of the ones i taught on a one to one basis not one of them couldnt spell due to lack of intelligence. One was a highly qualified manager, one was dyslexic, one was a romany, they where from all walks of life but not one lacked in intelligence.

Must admit spelling is easy for me, i am the one people at work rely on to spell words they can't and i can often spell a word ive heard but not seen, however maths i find quite difficult and if i want to convert kg to pounds, i use a bag of sugar as a guide or my mobile phone convertor or i just ask my kids, both are good at maths but not so good with spelling

Absolutely - there are many different skills and forms of intelligence beyond maths and English (or whatever your mother tongue is)

Spelling won't matter in a few years as spell checing software will be much more sophisticated in a few years, so they say.

So it doesnt matter.

Which is a bit like saying looking something up on Wikipedia is the same thing as knowledge.

Only it isnt.

So it does matter.

A lot.

I didn't take it personally! I was referring to your general comment about how many people could spell without a spell checker and pointing out I could: a personal comment to a general comment.

I don't recall constantly talking about my education: as a black child I along with others were seen as thick and were in "special" classes because we spoke like our parents: patois, which was "unacceptable". Everything seems to be acceptable now as long as it's understood, which is not fair to children because it is limiting, whether we like it or not!

From my experience people get help in filling out application forms and get found out at the interview stage. Demoralising as many don't know they have a problem as no one is correcting them.

That is the sad thing, the system failing some of our children. My children had the same education I had, local inner city primary school and over crowded comprehensive where the majority of children didn't have English as a second language.

I daresay if I mention my daughters all went to uni, I'd be accused of going on about that too.

Post often.

Post well.

Notting

I actually employed a young lady who was academacally under par, she was CRAP at maths and our job aswell as being physical we still use alot of maths.

When we interviewed her - i was unsure about her - as even tho a keen and nice person, her schooling showed she was under par.

BUT - we decided to give her a chance.

She couldnt even do 12 x 4,

so i asked her what 12 x 2 was - and she said 28!!!!

I had a lot of hard work - but,

she said she had no help as school, went to eveining classes, and had extra help from me and another work mate....

she has now passed her NVQ2 and is now on the nect level of her training.

All beit - if we hadnt given her the chance - she wouldnt be where she is now and would still be stacking shelves, which althuogh we need shelf stackers - those that want to get ahead should be given the chance - and them that want to just stacck shelves should be left to it,

Mt opinoin only of course xxx

"had to interview a young guy for a job at or today and part of the interview is a spelling test of 20 words.

Wouldnt say you constantly go on about your daughters going to university, you only mention that a couple of times aday "

I'm going to miss my baby actually, I'm dreading Sunday! What you don't know is my daughter is a paranoid schizophrenic, spent her 16th birthday in a secure unit.

To have come out, passed her A levels and going to uni, without me fussing she takes her medication is a big deal for me, so if my saying she's off to uni offends you, you can always avoid my posts, and I'll avoid your petty ones!

no, no letter of application, just a phone interview on the back of a 'find a friend' scheme run by my employer

10 years ago i USED to bin CV's that were written in bad hand writing or bad spelling - but these days am much more lenient as the actual work the person does is more important than how they can spell - even in my job where spelling and communication is VERY improtant.

What amused me last week was the speech recognition text on a weather forecast.

"reign spreading from the west..."

surely it can't be that difficult to program the software that "reign" is unlikely to feature in a weather report.

Now had it been about Queenie, well.

When I was kid at school, I suffered with what’s now called glue-ear so causing hearing difficulties, I was also short sighted and from memory I now realise it was years before it was noticed. Although I’ve not had any tests I also believe I’m at least slightly dyslexic. All of this was carefully diagnosed by such experts as my parents and teachers, yes you’ve got it, I was diagnosed a stupid useless lazy little boy left at the back of the class to rot.

Where some kids might have been born with a silver spoon in their mouth I was born with a spanner in one hand and a screwdriver in the other, I was lucky to be born with a talent for all things engineering and in spite of my weakness in academic matters my talent pulled me through.

Fortunately in those days companies looking for engineers were looking for engineers not experts in English composition/spelling, as a youngster I didn’t get the job that required an application form filling in because such a thing would make me look like the diagnosis mentioned in the first paragraph... idiot! However not wishing to show off, from my very early 20’s application forms were not a barrier because companies were seeking me not me seeking them and while still having no formal qualifications whatsoever I have doctors and professors of physics requiring my engineering expertise.

Conversely to what some of you are saying about computers further bastardising English and education, for me it has provided the opposite. The advent of text messaging on mobile phones, emails, Internet text chat, indeed such things as these forums give me cause to write. Spell checkers provide me with constant spelling tuition, text messaging, emailing etc. give me plenty of practice and the abundance of very poor standards of spelling and composition of others provide plenty of examples of how not to do it.

Diamondsmiles mentions a person put off posting in the forums because of spelling issues, you will probably find the person also has difficulty reading too. Reading for me is in fact relatively hard work and where others can’t be bothered to finger the shift key and or add some punctuation and check spelling it can make things VERY difficult for those of us who genuinely has a lesser ability with written English.

And if anyone is wondering yes this was written with the aid of a word processor and I still often make errors in the manor of manners and manors

Dyslexia is still not recognised in many schools. Our twins were not diagnosed until they went to secondary school, their primary school teacher told me not to be stupid when i told her they were showing typical signs of dyslexia. They both passed all their GCSE's and studied for 3 years at the second best horticultural college in the counry, both gaining distinctions. Only because they were diagnosed early enough to make a difference. Both are now garden centre managers. Pretty good for mid twenties dyslexics.

One of our younger sons is also dyslexic and is getting help at college with this, but was told for the majority of his time in secondary school that he was stupid (by the teachers). Which has knocked his confidence terribly.

Perhaps the young lad mentioned never got the help he needed early enough, if at all. Because the teachers were too busy sorting out the ones who constantly play up in class, or was told he was just stupid.

It also gives you something to think about when the teacher who writes your childs school report is incapable of spelling simple words!

Some people on this thread are saying spelling doesn't matter and people be given a chance. Maybe someone gave your son's teacher a chance as spelling doesn't matter!

Not sure about other areas, but our children were diagnosed by a number of tests set by the LEA. The ammount of help dyslexics get in our area is minimal, but can't say if this is the same nationwide. It also took nearly a year from diagnosis for the funding for the help to become available.

It's the sheer determination and hard work put in by our sons that got them where they are today.

Don’t get me started on the subject of confidence bashing LOL... That was a big issue too, when you’ve got parents, teachers calling a kid stupid, class mates follow suit. That was another big issue for me compounding English issues. There is no two ways about it you can’t help laugh at some spelling disasters but of course that is something else I suffered in the event that I did try and spell for myself. My hand writing still isn’t good but it was very bad and I do remember as a kid actually handwriting as badly as possible to try and cover the laughable spelling inability. Ultimately at school I wouldn’t write anything, so no written work was done.

But here’s a funny thing, I remember being awarded 100 lines for not doing homework. The teacher wrote on the top of some sheets of paper, “I must not forget to do my homework” x 100 and so I copied it 100 times. Strangely perhaps I was good at drawing and art, I could ‘copy’ lines almost to a low standard of forgery and so I followed the example and then got told off for poor hand writing – can’t win Huh! Then what did he do with all my hard work? Tore it up and chucked it in the bin!!! The lesson learned for me at the time... teachers are c***s.

Horny

Good for you that you encourage your kids to lead a "normal" life.

A~ good friend of mine had a dislexic daughter - and to meet her you would never know, - shewas good at art, and drawing and internal design etc.

Never has she EVER palyed on her dyslexia.

THEN - this is why peeps get pissed off - i have another friend who doesnt even take her son out to the local farm, hehadnt even seen a cow and he is now 10 years old - and shestill even cuts his food up for him.

Not the childs fault - but now been diagnosed with Autism.SORRY - but that is bollox!!!

Its mum be3ing to lazy to takethe child out andsocialise him job.

It is incredibly difficult to get a child corrcetly diagnosed as suffering from autism. I suspect there is more to it than never having seen a cow, or being serious, being socialised. Being socialised will not overcome autism.

I have a family member who is autistic and one who has aspergers. the autism is fairly obvious for all to see and was diagnosed fairly early on in life, the aspergers, the child was 15 before a diagnosis was made

you may laugh at my phrases of context mr MUSHROOM - be in the dark and fed shit,

But itt was a sloght comparism,

As in children are MIS - DIAGNOSED witrh stuff the ARE NOT illness or disease but the fact they are not brought up properly and made to socialise!

That child has no friends, no life, no nothing - cos his parents never take him anywhere not even to the local park.

So take the piss all you like mushroom- i am not in the dark chick.

I think we seem to have forgotten on this thread as its gone off on a tangent as usual that we are here to meet people for sex not chastise them for their spelling or anything else that we are good at that they are not, in fact we should keep our mouths shut. Eveyone is different; what is right for some is not for others, what some are good at others are not, indeed ive already mentioned that i am fantastic at spelling but crap at maths and so has someone else said similar being good with their hands but not good with words. No-one should be made fun of because they can't spell, lets face it some find it very hard but are fantastic at something else

Seems that threads go off on a tangent because some folks are just spoiling for a fight or is it a poor grasp of English grammar/composition playing a part again… a typical FAB forum thread…

Someone says, “I like apples, I think they are best, what do others like?”

Responses often follow something like this…

‘Who the fuck are you to tell me what fruit I should like’

‘What does it matter what fruit anyone likes, its their right to choose’

‘No, what I think the OP is saying is he hates oranges’

‘Oh right now we got a fucking orange racist on the site’

‘It doesn’t say anything on his profile about liking apples, so what else is he hiding, the lying bastard, this hobby is based on trust you know’…

and so on…

Beggars belief at times!

Has anyone suggested pineapples to this person? They aren't as vanilla as oranges or apples.

"Seems that threads go off on a tangent because some folks are just spoiling for a fight or is it a poor grasp of English grammar/composition playing a part again… a typical FAB forum thread…

I'm sorry, but as a dedicated fruitarian for well over ten years, i find peoples attitudes on here very disappointing.

I'd be grateful if you would stop using fruit to allude to sexual practices and preferences as i find it both insulting and demeaning to something i take very seriously in my life.

Fruit is the most highly nutritious substance known to man and has sustained generations of humans through time immemorial, and will continue to do so long after we have shuffled of this mortal coil.

A little respect please people.

As a dedicated carnivore I find both of your attitudes appalling!! You should be disgusted with yourselves! If evolution/god/god+evolution (delete as applicable) had intended us to eat foul fruits and the like we would have been 'gatherer, gatherers' and prehistoric cave art would be full of images of melons and bananas...

One time my kids were asking why we named them as we did. Youngest son asked,

“Why was I named John?”

“Well son, we named you John in memory of a close friend who met with an untimely tragic death before his 21st birthday” (Actually true apart from the name)

“And what about me dad, why was I named Lee?”

“Well in your case son we thought it best to give you a name you might be able to spell”

Well EXCUSE ME you ignoramous.

Man was eating fruit and berries for millenia before he became "hunter gatherer".

And it was only the sustinence he gained from these foods which allowed him to develop both the mental and motor neurone skills in order to fashion tools and learn techniques in hunting.

And before you try and turn this into some kind of "meat good, fruit bad" type of rant may i respectfully remind you that we are living in 2010 and these cheap jibes long ago outlived their usefullness.

Some people like meat. Some people like fruit.

Some people like both. On the same plate, at the same time - the so called "balanced diet" lobby - you'll have seen them around your local town with theie "5 a day keeps the doctor away" Nazi style proaganda.

But in the modern world it's each to their own. Live and let live i say. Even if your barbaric slaughter of innocent little animals disgust me to my very core (oh those cute faces) i absolutely defend your right to eat them in peace. All i ask in turn is that i be allowed to enjoy my simple lunch or fruit and berries iobody in return.

Nobody wants to go back to the days when people pointed and laughed at others in the street, just because their diet was "different" from yours. We're not going back to "veggy" and "non veggy" education for our children, comprehensive and fundamental understanding of each others viewpoints is what is called for in the modern world.

(And besides. We need to stick together to avoid the stupid people who can't spell.)

What’s all this bollocks about meat eaters and ‘their poor little faces’ on the animals as they jolly into the slaughterhouse…

What about the poor plants and fruits! Just because a lettuce doesn’t run away when you go to pick it or scream when you cut it doesn’t mean it’s any less barbaric to consume the poor things!

At least us meat eaters have the decency and compassion to kill out meat humanly by stunning with a serious punch in the head with a bolt before ripping the neck open with a chainsaw so the animals heart can pump out the blood for us and so its ready to eat sooner.

Do you not realise that even a lettuce will always do the best it can do to survive, after all, have you ever seen a lettuce commit suicide? NO, and if it did have legs, do you think it would just sit there and let you eat it? Of course not it would run like fuck in a bid to preserve its own existence!

Veggies are just so cruel, at least us meat eaters eat our food when it’s dead, we don’t eat it alive!!!

But here’s the thing that brings it all into line… can vegetation read and spell? NO, can animals read and spell NO… so fuck it, we might as well eat them cos they will never get a meet on here!

Well, found my new hero on site! I have been saying this on various threads for a while about how people don't have an opinion on anything if it doesn't directly affect them!

That sir, is a perfect representation of my opinion! Nicely put...

On spelling...

I do think it is important for people to be able to spell correctly! It is important to not only be able to communicate with people whose first language is English, but also people overseas who don't have the advantage of knowledge of "slang spelling"..

I deal with quite a few overseas companies and I have to be able to spell correctly as most run letters and emails through a translation program if it is for general consumption. Slang spelling just doesn't work!

I think the thread has been diverted somewhat to take it in the direction of Dyslexia! As far as I see it, the OP didn't open this thread about Dyslexia, it was about kids leaving school and not being able to spell. Dyslexia is quite another thing. Everyone applying for a job has the right and opportunity to say about any conditions they have that they may need either help with or need extra training. Silly thing is, I as an employer cannot ask that question!

No, Dyslexia is not the issue here, it is either the crap education system or a society where parents no longer see their kids as possible little monsters and don’t back the system! I would guess that there are some from each camp posting on here…

You've ALMOST got it.

The spelling threads, or threads that degenerate into spelling threads, alwayd end up being about dyslexia and learning difficulties etc etc etc.

But don't EVER suggest that someone might be, erm, not as bright as the next kid or, er, might have wanted to pay attention whenat school and actually learn something.

'Cos being clever is stoopid, innit?

And it don't mean nuffink if dey can't spell 'cos it is cos dey got tenshun deficit ting innit?

But dey deffo aint fik? Alright?

Dey aint stupid, dey just got a "fing".

All of them apparently. With no exceptions.

But it doesnt matter because soon software in regards to both speech recognition and spell checking etc will be so sophisticated it won't matter.

And what with calculators and computers, where's the need to learn how to count either. If you think about it, there's a lot of time being wasted on things they'll never need to use their brains for.

Like thinking.

Some people are dyslexic. Some people do have learning difficulties. I both sympathise and empathise with them, and i hope they manage to overcome them as best as they can. But at least they are making an effort.

It's the rest who concern me. Because they are thick as shit. And they don't care, it's almost a badge of honour.

Fine by me.

But stupid is as stupid does.

And there are more stupid people on here than there are dyslexics or people with learning difficulties.

i cannot believe that someone has managed to get through school etc cannot spell words such as receipt, available, query etc

i was gonna post a spelling bee thread but soon realised that wouldn't work cos i'd have to type the word i wanted you to spell its been a looooooong day

What job requires the spelling of 20 words please?

Did he write a letter of application ?

i should think lots of jobs require the spelling of 20 words.

no, no letter of application, just a phone interview on the back of a 'find a friend' scheme run by my employer

What job requires the spelling of 20 words please ?

one where employees are responsible for writing emails that get sent direct to clients through systems that (shockingly) dont support spell check facilities

Thanks. What's the find a friend thing ?

lol do you want a job granny?? cos if i refer you (and you pass the tests) i get nice little bonus "
