Sky, having a laugh!

Sky have just written to me to tell me my Sky equipment is now out of warranty and to offer me insurance on it.

The cost of this insurance? £99 per year.

That's almost half the cost of the contents insurance on everything in my house! (Although that reminds me, I have a few things to add to my policy).

What would they be insuring? One Sky+ HD box, one dish and one remote control (which can be replaced very easily if necessary).

I'm not even still in contract with Sky, so if anything broke it'd be easy to negotiate repair or replacement to stop me switching to cable. (They moved my dish last year, free, as a "one off" after I said I'd switch to Virgin, and take the dish down totally, when they initially wanted to bill me £99).

£99 a year to cover an HD Sky+ box, a remote and a dish?

Really???

Does anyone actually take out these policies???

"Price up a reacement box in maplin"

If and when it breaks just call and let them know. When they give you the costs to replace just say thank you, please pass me to the cancellation department and you normally get what you want!

Now I've discovered NowTV and because I live in a cable area, they'll only have to give me the slightest reason to cancel and I will.

I can't imagine why anyone would think it's worth £99/yr to insure their Sky kit.

If I asked my home insurance company they'd probably add it on to the policy for a few quid, (the receiver may already be covered for accidental damage but I expect the dish would need to be added on).

The covers is for your HD box only I think. The cost of the box is £99 so you might as well wait till it dies and then pay for a new one or cancel.

I cancelled my phone and broadband with them , went to virgin as in a cabled area.

Then rang up to cancel , tv I now have two hd boxes , all the channels for 48 per month , rising to 58 after my year contract is up

As I said, all Sky equipment would be covered. In my case that's an HD box, a remote control and the dish.

The letter specifically mentions boxes, remotes and the dish so I'm fairly sure it would cover all boxes, remotes and the dish.

Near Edinburgh..

If you Phone them to Cancel your ongoing subscription..

Just tell them you were cancelling because your Sky Box was being a pain in the arse and not recording things and deleting others..

They will send you a brand new up to date one.. for nothing..

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

One of the reasons I moved to Virgin was that they don't sell you the equipment; it's on a rental. When it plays up they just come and fix it. If the box can't be fixed immediately they just give you a new one.

The only problem with that is that you then lose all your recorded programmes stored on the box. If the box is kaput then you would lose them anyway so, on balance, it just feels better.

My Sky box and dish were always causing problems and they kept trying to charge me for new kit.

I need to work out how to back up my Sky box because I've got some recordings I'd be sad to lose.

It's on my to do list. I hope I get round to it before the hard drive/box dies.

"i am a happy Now TV customer.. sky had too many channels id never watch "

I use NowTV for films sometimes. It's a no-brainer. I can get it for a month at a time for £9.99 - less if there's a special offer on. The movie channels via Sky were £16/m last time I looked and you can't start and stop the subscription easily like you can with NowTV.

I wanted access to Sky Movies for Christmas so I bought a NowTV box, including a 2 month Movies subscription, on offer for £13. I also used a Quidco offer so I got a month long trial free and will get £15 cashback for paying £9.99 for the subsequent month long subscription.

So all in, the NowTV box and 4 month's subscription to movies cost me £7.99. I'd have been silly not to!

The problem for me with NowTV for regular TV viewing would be that there's no way to record it.

There are several series I follow but need to be able to record to watch when convenient, (and so I can wind them back when I'm having trouble concentrating).

I have no interest in having the sports channels, which makes it even cheaper still

I'm glad I can get the 6 Nations without needing any sports channels.

Uh, don't know.

Most of what I watch is on Sky One, Fox, Sky Atlantic etc.

I need to work out which channels I actually watch and see if I can ditch Sky altogether.

Re-read the letter. It's not actually from Sky.

If it's the Sky Protect one then it is endorsed by Sky but they don't run it and from what I hear, you're right, it's a rip off@

There are a lot of scam insurances for Sky going around.

As others say, the best place for it is the bin!

Generally Sky will always want to help you fix a broken box, rather than lose a customer and even if you had to by a replacement box from them it would be around the same price as 1 tear of that dodgy insurance.

If your box starts playing up its always worthwhile joining one of those Facebook spotted or sale pages. I've seen loads of people selling working boxes for around a tenner. I sold my old one that way when I switched to Virgin.

6.99 for those channels for the entertainments pass

The insurance it probably not from Sky at all, but from a company that makes you think they are.

It's been about 10 years since I've been with Sky. I had a problem where the graphics card was going and everything was turning green! I challenged Sky when they tried to charge me, saying that I'll leave, as I had a month to month contract with them. They soon can and replaced the box!

I'm not sure that is possible because everything is copyright and encoded.

Sorry.

I had major problems with sky just before Christmas. They came out and fixed the box then the fri before Christmas it broke again (same fault). Theyd charged me 65 the week before and wanted to charge me again. And they werent going to come out til 28 dec either. After a deal of kicking of and being passed to cancellations I got a new hd box (that they had said I couldnt have because they were 300)

Only keep sky for Arrow really

As I understand it, it's possible to duplicate the content onto another hard drive. That hard drive would still need to be in a Sky box with a valid card, but could be used to replace the existing drive if it failed.

I think. I need to look into it in more detail.
