Washing Machine Help!

Right, before I go knocking on an elderly neighbours door, I had the washing machine on earlier and thought everything was fine, until I came to empty it.
It seems the drum has stopped spinning so I think it has gone through the whole cycle without moving though it did sound as if everything was ok.
But nothing has been spun, and therefore all my work clothes are still heavily full of water.
Is there a simple fix? Even just for this one time, to give me time to buy a new one next weekend?
It is an old manual machine so not really surprised, but any advise on how to get the water out tonight is greatly appreciated. |

If it's not spinning the belt has probably come off, you have to pull it out and take the back off to have a look. If it hasn't snapped it can just be put back on for now  |

undo the filter at the bottom of the machine....put towels down and if possible some thign to catch the water (although they are often so close to the bottom its hard to do that).
It might be something as simple as something caught in the filter stopping it spinning like a bra wire. |

The water has drained (thank god) but my clothes are soaking, seems I may just have to try and hand rinse them and chuck them in the drier and hope for the best, as their is no chance I can pull it out and check the situation with the belt

it may be a blocked impeller. lots of machines have a small round cap on the front face of the machine, under the door, normally hidden by a flap that folds down. behind that cap is a filter and maybe a little ting that has vanes like a propellor.
open the flap, get some baking trays/ roasting dishes and old towels etc to soak up water, unscrew the cap (water will drain out, don't panic, it's ok, use the trays etc), and check for coins, pen lids and other random bits. clear out any crap you find.
put it back together and restart the machine.
if it's not that it could well be worn carbon bushes on the motor. and that is very fixable for about £50, so don't bin the machine just yet.

90 percent chance it's the carbon bushes on the motor.
sounds scary, but if you are handy with a spanner look on espares on you tube/ web on you can fix cheaply.
if you're not handy , call someone who is. better than binning a good machine for want of 30 minutes and 30 quid on new bushes |

I didn't think so, the drum moves quite freely by hand, I've just chucked it all in the drier, so looks like washing machine shopping next weekend! |

Bollocks... Lol I've done my brushes before it's never 5 minutes and likely to take the skin of several knuckles. Grrr they build these things to annoy people who try to fix them |

depends on the make. i had a hotpoint and just to even get to the filter you had to remove the back panel, break our forearm in three places and grow and extra finger |

If it's a top mount you only need to take the top panel off and I it's a bottom mount you only need to lean the machine to get in from underneath, either way the motor is offered up to you. |

90 percent chance it's the carbon bushes on the motor.
sounds scary, but if you are handy with a spanner look on espares on you tube/ web on you can fix cheaply.
if you're not handy , call someone who is. better than binning a good machine for want of 30 minutes and 30 quid on new bushes"

If it's the bushes don't bin the machine you can buy them for a few quid... I might be teaching you to suck eggs.. Make sure if you're changing them you Unplug the machine |

Ok guys (and sorry women) I am not very good with mens toys! I broke down in tears trying to bleed my radiators as I didn't realise I would affect the pressure and lose heat and hot water. So me taking off the top of a machine and knowing what I am looking at? Is a joke to be honest. I can barely change a spot light (yes I am openly embarrassing myself) So stop fighting, I just want an easy way out and get back to normal.
All I need now is to find out the clothes I chucked in the drier were too wet and fook that up as well |

Ours did exactly the same thing last month it was the main shaft on the drum snapped due to 21 pence left in the drum and too much weight being put in drum cost to repair £60 so bit the bullet and got a new LG for £500 not really worth repairing something 10 years old and your still stuck with an old washer (best see if open the washer door and see if the drum moves forward and backwards easily)  |

As somebody indicated earlier, are you sure it wasn't just overloaded with soaking wet, heavy clothes? How about trying it with little or nothing in it, if you haven't done it already? |

. You can get a new machine from about two hundred pounds upwards . Dixon's Carphone are selling Hotpoints for around £270 . Your new machine will be a cold fill. |

Sounds like me and a plan that might work 
Will test it again with the towels used to empty the filter that flooded the kitchen as someone said there will only be a little amount of water
Though second thought, maybe not as I couldn't get the filter back in properly! |

Pull the machine out, 2 or 3 Philips screws hold the top panel in place, once removed the panel slides back and off, the belt runs from the motor pulley to the drum spider on the back of the tub and is black and about 1/2 inch wide, the brushes sit either side of the motor. |

Shame you`re not close enough to one of John Pye Auctions premises! They get ex-display/overstock/returns items from retail outlets including John Lewis and some of the white goods go extrememly cheaply! Much of the stuff is still in it`s transport protection! |
