mechanics advice needed

that could be for many reasons, so its hard to say exactly. Could be something major like worn out synchro hubs for example which means opening the box.
Or if you're lucky maybe it is just a clutch issue, much easier/cheaper to fix.
But as for the oil thing, best to change the oil once a year if you can as most people dont bother and then parts can wear prematurely. And check the oil level every now and then, top up when low. |

Any noise when the gears engage?
When did you last change yer oil?
How many miles has the van done?
Is the clutch pedal stiff or floppy?
Any noise when driving? Whirring maybe?
Do all gears work when engaged?
Is it harder to engage gears when driving than when stationary?

First check clutch adjustment, is it hard to select all gears including reverse?
Have a look for any oil leaks, if there are none the odds are the oil is ok, on many transmissions you can not drain the oil to change it,

Does the clutch bite whilst the pedal is almost fully depressed or when you have almost lifted your foot from the pedal , this should give you a good indication of whether or not the clutch is on its way out |

That's engine oil !
Brake and clutch fluid will be in a small plastic pot , and more than likely say what it is somewhere on the pot |

You need to get underneath to check gearbox oil , unlikely to be that unless you have a leak |

Engine oil has bigger all to do with the gearbox.
Checking the gearbox oil is usually a bit of a pig and often involves getting under the car.
The usual cause of gear selection problems are worn clutch, worn or leaking hydraulic parts (master or slave cylinder) or worn gear selector parts.
Unless you're handy with a spanner all of the above will require a trip to a mechanic.
Check your brake fluid level as that's a good indicator of leaking hydraulics because it's a shared reservoir. |

Good news for the gearbox. Probably clutch realted, new one more likely. Have you got a mate, or maybe a mechanic from here who likes tv's to help a lady in distress. You will of course be obliged to return the favour and do whatever he tells you to for a while. You will be his sex slave till you have paid off your debt.

I suggest you get it checked out ASAP we had one of these vans it developwed the same symptoms which we stupidly ingnored end result new clutch and gearbox ouch !! |

The citroen/Peugeot/fiat doesn't use a hydraulic clutch it's a cable, unfortunately it's the self adjusting rachet type, £50 plus fitting, if the cable still has play then it's further down either the thrust bearing or selector fork. As regards gearbox oil the only way to check the level is to open the fill. If you've not had it done in 3 years I'd recommend having it changed. |

the clutch peddle seems to be ok .not slack or loose. its just that the gearstick seems to be a bit difficult |

Its very unlikely to be a gearbox oil problem. I haven't checked the gearbox oil levels in 35 years of motoring. I have owned, and still do, cars with hundreds of thousands of miles on the clock. Never changed gearbox oil. Its more likely to be a clutch related problem. Worse case scenario, could be a gearbox problem. Get it checked by a proper mechanic, would be my advice. |

Its obviously your cadget motor grating against the olespeel cog causing friction in the emibox gear differential through-spinner. Any mechanic would know that. Sheesh. |

Some kind soul could have popped over as its weekend?
Would save an innocent uninformed girl potentially getting screwed over (not the bonnet) at an unscrupulous garage.
I have no advice as I know nothing about vehicles, apart from filling them up and getting them serviced.

Could be that the clutch is on it's way out or of it's a diesel the DMf is going if so expect big bills between £700 & £2000 to have it done if that's the case . Oh and it's not a DIY job either |

A breather from the crank wouldn't affect the clutch or box"
Transmissions have breathers, but even if that was blocked it would not cause problems with the gearchange |
