Cash Machine Rigging?

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Not my usual sort of topic, but I'm concerned.

I just popped out to withdraw some cash, and upon having my card returned, found a cellophane like sticker attached to it over my chip, printed with a number. It could just be something that's fallen off someone else's card, but naturally I don't want to risk others getting into my account.

Advice?

Ring the lost and stolen line since they're normally around the clock. Explain the situation and see if they think it's worth blocking your card.

There's an emergency number, usually printed on the back of the card. Ring that.

Ahhh I just assume most people have online access to their banks these days.

Does your bank have a website with a contact number for reporting Fraud-type problems? Or something on the back of the card or your bank statements?

Cash machines usually have a number on them to call if you think there is something dodgy with the machine.

I've tried calling the fraud line, but they don't open till tomorrow morning. Still, I suppose if there's no banking on Sundays, then at least my cash is safe for now.

If someone has your card details they dont need to wait till the banks open to start spending on it if its a debit or credit card

My ex, whilst living in London got a mighty surprise whilst withdrawing about 50 quid!! oops, it was legally wrong but morally 100% correct .......which is far more important, I'm sure you'll agree!

......but in your case (sorry, I got sidetracked ) , get straight on to the bank, dude!!

Should you call police so they can investigate the machine itself?

Give the police a call, they may go and check out the cashpoint in question to see if there is anything dodgy going on with it.

You should also report it directly to the police as soon as possible...ie now....they. an go and take a look at the machine and remove any device for evidence if one is present

Good luck

"Which bank doesn't have a stolen card number for 24 hours a day?

None.

Every bank has one and all bar some of the building societies have 24 hour customer services.

Little point in calling the police as unless there's a 1990's skimming device the size of an iPad attached to the outside of the ATM then there's nothing they can do bar log a report and possibly (although unlikely they would) call in to the bank on Monday.

Assuming of course it wasn't a privately owned ATM not attached to a bank branch.

If you really are worried that your card has been compromised withdraw as much of your cash as possible, unless you have now managed to contact your bank.

Don't forget, should you feel or have the need, after midnight is a new day so Max withdrawal minutes before and a minute after saves you time.

Which is something the thieves know so if it has been cloned they'll have already done that.

Personally I wouldn't have chosen a Bank that DIDN'T have a 24 hour facility to cancel my card in the first place.

Come to that...I actually have never heard of a bank that DOESN'T have that facility.

I would have thought that was a legal requirement.

Maybe.

It takes time to clone cards, okay I'm not a thief so have no idea how long. It would also depend on just how many card details they have copied

To be honest it was not the best advise as the op could have simply changed his pin number at a machine, I can with my bank.

They can still use the card online etc but these people want hard cash.

Hope you sorted it OP

.

Shred the card.

Set fire to the ATM

Blow up the internet

Phone the CIA,FBI,mi5, Interpol and report.

Vote ukip: 90% of atm crime is by Romanians apparently.

But most of all don't panic

You could always walk into your local police station and ask their advice...

That is of course if your local police station hasn't been one of the ones closed down so the shower of shit in government now had the money to give tax cuts to their mates.

You don't have to have the card blocked just get it put on hold for a few days anything dodgy happens replace it if not in hold and carry on

Here's the problem with that^^

Fraudsters kind of already know that, that's why 1 month/2 months later someone pulls a few transactions, while you scratch your head wondering how the fuck that happened.

I've asked my card companies before if they'd suspend or put my card on hold and been told it's cancel or nothing.

Did we hear from the op? All banks should have 24/7 support, for their own loss prevention. My gut feel is if the machine is not tampered with, no one would defraud by adding a plastic confirmation sticker, showing they've done so.

Are you seriously telling me your bank does not have a 24 hour phone line to cancel cards if lost or stolen?

I find that hard to believe look on your banks web site there will be a 24 hour contact number
