Whenever I'm at the gym and I chest press or shoulder press my left shoulder clicks and I'm only managing stupid weights ie 14-18kg on the machines (not free weights) at first I thought I was rusty because of not doing gym work for a number of years. But it's been nearly 8 weeks now and no improvement, anybody experienced the same? Any ideas? Just after general advice I know I'll have to bite the bullet and see the doc.

See a physio, not a doctor.

"See a physio, not a doctor. "

I would have to be referred by my GP.

Not if you pay privately, usually around £30-40 for a consultation. Not much for peace of mind. You might have to wait a while on the NHS.

A lot of gyms have contacts to private sports physios! My shoulders click because of fractures and damage.. Its not good and extensive over use can cause more damage! Leave the shoulders be for now and get to the physio

If your shoulder(s) are hurting when doing chest work, especially on chest/bench press then It means you're elbows flare out to much. Your elbows should tuck and come close to your sides so you get full range of motion. If you flare your elbows out, the tension is taking away from your chest towards your shoulders. Which is were you can start doing damage to your rotator cuffs and other delicate muscles.

Also don't fall in love with machines. Your better off with free weights and barbells. It isolates the muscles more and it's better for ROM.

Watch "How to bench press with Dan Green"

And

"Retract your scapular"

Both videos apply to chest work, especially retracting your scapular

Someone mentioned stretching that will only lead to greater risk of injury, your shoulder is clicking as it's more than likely out of alignment (being pulled forward.

You need to work on pulling the joint back (scapular retraction as mentioned above). Any kind of pulling movement like reverse flies etc will help

BSE

Sounds like you have an A/C separation. Common problem and not repairable. Just train carefully and look at doing more rotator cuff work.

Linear movements are good but you will find one angle of incline press painful. Others will be ok though, so work around it.

Also, using dumbells allows you to accommodate and change angles to more comfortable ones. Machines can force you through uncomfortable ranges of movement...if they do stop using that machine.

not far from iceland,,,,,, tescos is nearer though :-) (near leeds)

If it's causing you pain stop, my shoulders have a click when I lift, i went to see a physio for another reason she had a prod and a poke and said some folk s joints do.

Go get checked out.

If it's just clicking, can't see an issue, most people's joints click at some time, just build up the weight gradually. if it's hurting, that's a whole different ball game, stop doing what hurts, and get professional advice, a physio is a good idea.
