what's the male equivalent to a feminist?

Don't worry about it. We're basically a patriarchal society, it's just that everything is skewed on this site due to the male/female ratio. |

No offense but your profile is a bit creepy. Profile makes you seem doubtful of yourself and whilst pictures convey your dark sense of humour, better pictures wouldn't be a bad idea. Good luck. |

Therefore, the male version which is masculine = masculist.
Let's not bring equations into this fella....you'll just confuse me
Don't really think there is a male equivalent, go back to the 18th century and the suffragettes, they were fighting for equal rights, rights that men already had. "
Was more referring to on fab really rather than the wider world.....my lass is a raging feminist so I've been pretty well educated in the subject......had to sit through her performing in Lancaster uni's production of the vagina monologues this week (it was pretty good actually) and even read the female eunuch.... |

you might mean the late 19th century there.... and sufferage is specifically concerned with the right to vote through a democratic process. womens sufferage was achieved in the uk in 1928 .... but mens suffrage was only achieved 10 years earlier in 1918 .... just saying |

Was on about that Emily lady who threw herself in front of the kings horse and the rest of her crew that went to prison and were force fed through tubes up their arseholes when they went on hunger strike, they're the definition of what true feminists were. I did mean 19td but pressed 8 in my phone! |

That's not what you get if you google misogyny, darling... Dislike of, contempt for, or ingrained prejudice against women, and that's from http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/english/misogyny
the whole idea that men hate women because we won't have sex with them is ridiculous, and pretty degrading to be honest... no wonder you don't have much luck with the ladies if this is the way you treat us... as the definition says though, ingrained prejudice... |

King Soloman, reputed to be the wisest man in christendom, had 700 wives and 300 concubines.
I often wondered why he would give himself so much grief, but then realised, that after a hard day adjudicating and so forth, when he cam home, there must have been a good chance that at least one of them would be in a good mood |

Feminine does not equate to feminist.
Men can be feminists too.
Men have always been part of the feminist movement.

AND the men who do the same, I hope. Calling feminists nazis is just horrible. Calling people idiots because you view them in a certain way is horrible.
Equality is all that it's about and not about superiority. Unfortunately, when any group has to lose some of their superiority they see it as the uppity trying to get the upper hand and becoming to superior to them. Their fear and inferiority complex causes problems.
I AM equal to men but I do not always EXPERIENCE equal treatment. I want to be treated equally. Equality does not actually come about by doing exactly the same things for everyone but do what is needed to bring people up to a level that is equal to those you experience more power and better treatment.
It always shocks me how many more misogynistic women I find on here than in my everyday life. |

Yes and men that do the same but at this moment I'm talking about women so felt no need to mention the male side. I agree women are equal and should be treated so. But feminists I've come across think they are better than men. Which isn't right. And only seem to want to be equal in areas which suit them. I'm not misogynistic. I just stick up for men when I think it's necessary. |

I hope you never have to experience unequal treatment because of your gender. I hope even more that you never feel it's necessary to accept unequal treatment because of your gender.
Please try to stop calling feminists nazis as you come across as a misogynistic.
Doing work with young women over the last year I have been saddened that so many I met didn't understand how long and hard the fight was to get to where we are now (where we still don't have equal pay and equal treatment but are better off than we were) and worse, that they thought it was all pointless as men are in charge anyway.

in some areas of life there is institutional misandry ... education, access to services, cancer awareness, cancer screening, punitive sentencing by the courts, tackling the sucide issue to name a few ....
but obviously any improvements sought in these areas should not be at the expense of tackling the discrimination that women also face |

Misandry doesn't really exist though. All those things are issues for sure, but they don't exist because women are 'in charge' of those areas and prevent men working there. My dad used to be a nurse and he was looked down on for doing a 'woman's job' - a problem created by patriarchy rather than feminism, as womens work is looked down on. Courts too - a woman is expected still to be the one who looks after the kids in a relationship, so when a relationship breaks down the expectation is for them to have custody, and this is agreed mainly out of courts without dispute. |

Feminism is a collection of movements and ideologies that share a common goal: to define, establish, and achieve equal political, economic, cultural, personal, and social rights for women.[1][2] This includes seeking to establish equal opportunities for women in education and employment.
A feminist generally self-defines as advocating for or supporting the rights and equality of women.[3]....there's the translation for those of you that obviously don't understand what the word means |

"How can any woman not be a feminist? Surely you all believe in equality?"
There are those - poor ignorant and misguided souls - who actually believe that women have 'enough' equality, don't think feminism has done anything for women, that feminists are akin to a genocidal antisemitic group and other misinformed, benighted myths based only on the twisted nonsense gleaned from a perfunctory skimming of the trashy end of media rather than actual, knowledge of feminist theories.
But god forbid they should actually pick up a book to discover howgenuinely iill-informed they are. The old knee-jerk responses of 'feminazis' don't require the effort of thought and are a comfortable cushion against the truth. |

I didn't pick out a bit of a sentence, I picked two sentences that said it all. If "They're called fucking idiots. Just like feminists should be" isn't what you meant, then you probably shouldn't have written it. |

Unfortunately it seems to be younger women particularly my kind of age group that are ill-informed in this way, maybe just the typical attempt at rebellion by one generation to try and go against the actions and beliefs of the generations before. Or maybe the untouchable arrogance of youth that these things don't affect them. A lot of my peers are now getting further on in their careers, having babies etc. and generally growing up and realising that it's not all rosy and there is still work to be done.

I work with young women and would say that many of them consider themselves feminists even before the age of 20. They may not be entirely knowledgeable but are firm in their convictions. They do not deserve to be likened to Nazis by anyone. |

I was reared on this. One mum no dad three elder sisters all in high powered jobs..... They don't even think the word feminism should exist.... Should be a given, a default position....the very word indicates doubt and questions where there shouldn't be questions..... Maybe over simplistic, but yeah |

My journey started when I was about 13 but I decided I was a feminist after reading Testament of Youth and looking at what happened to women before and after the wars. |

Read the sentence! Those that claim to be feminists yet think they are better than everyone else is not being equal is it. That's who are friggen idiots. And people that can't read properly either.
You seem very aggressive. Sure you're not a closet 'feminazi'? "
It's irritating when people don't read what you've written properly. |

"They're called fucking idiots. Just like feminists should be. Feminazis like to think they want equality But seem to enjoy belittling men and thinking they're better than everyone else. "
Oh and THIS is the post I was meaning. "They're called fucking idiits. Just like feminists should be. "
You did say that, didn't you? Perhaps you should read your own posts. |

"I love how people only read and pick out bits of sentences to shit all over.
People claiming to be feminists but thinking they're better than men or anyone else for that matter is who I think are fucking idiots.
I am a feminist. Have been since the age of 17. I am not an idiot nor do I believe I am better than men. That is not what feminism is about.

You did write it though. Granted you subsequently tried to backtrack from it, but you wrote it loud and clear so getting irritated by people challenging it is a little odd. |

I read it all. I read it in context. I responded to the words you used. I will have applied a tone to those words but I read the words. As you wrote them.
I found them offensive and I stated that.
Others have since read them and taken much the same interpretation I did.
So what is reading your words properly?

So your initial point was that feminists are idiots? The other comments about equality only came after that I believe. |

I'd challenge a man who made such a direct and sweeping statement and I'll challenge a woman who does the same. No one is picking on anyone. If you want to voice an extreme opinion you should be prepared to debate and defend it too. |

No that is not what your initial post said at all. It does not mention those who want equality. I've just gone through the entire thread in case I missed something you said and was unfairly challenging the viewpoint. Your initial post clearly states that feminists are 'fucking idiots' and you call them 'feminazis'. Therefore, if you stand by your initial post, which is what you say, then you stand by those insults.
You only added the proviso about those feminists who want equality (all of us actually) being ok after those insulting terms were challenged by someone else.
Now you've gone back to the beginning.
You are, of course, perfectly entitled to see feminists as akin to an extreme right wing group. But others are equally entitled to disagree. |

It wasn't a sweeping statement it was specifically about those that think they're Better. Which I've said several times now. |

And as several people on the thread as well as me have pointed out, that is specifically NOT what you said, and that's the statement I was challenging. ("They're called fucking idiots. Just like feminists should be." - in case you've forgotten. Sounds fairly sweeping to me.) |

I have never once stated your opinion is not valid. Quite the reverse in fact. However, you began with insults rather than merely opinion. You have since altered that given the offence which was taken but then, rather confusingly, then claimed you stood by your initial post.
That said, feminism is absolutely NOT about superiority of either gender. Anyone who claims it is is either ill-informed or ignorant. |

"I hope you never have to experience unequal treatment because of your gender. I hope even more that you never feel it's necessary to accept unequal treatment because of your gender.
in some areas of life there is institutional misandry ... education, access to services, cancer awareness, cancer screening, punitive sentencing by the courts, tackling the sucide issue to name a few ....
but obviously any improvements sought in these areas should not be at the expense of tackling the discrimination that women also face
Courts too - a woman is expected still to be the one who looks after the kids in a relationship, so when a relationship breaks down the expectation is for them to have custody, and this is agreed mainly out of courts without dispute."
when you say “misandry doesn't really exist” that comes accross as, that because our society systematically privileges men and disempowers women, misogyny serves a different cultural purpose, has different and more damaging impacts and grows from different roots to misandry. To a certain extent I agree with that, but saying misandry is not the mirror image of misogyny does not mean that misandry does not exist at all. I believe that arguing that misandry isn’t real is damaging to men, damaging to women, and damaging to the struggle for social justice.
When feminists say that misandry isn’t a thing, what I hear is that these issues are so minor, so marginal that they are insignificant. It is not just that they are unworthy of attention, they are not even worthy of a word to describe them. If women really want more men to be allies to the feminist movement and want us to believe that feminism really is on our side, then I struggle to see how this type of rhetoric is in any way helpful. |

Misandry does exist and is damaging to society. Just as misanthropy is. Misogyny has more structural foundations keeping it alive but I don't subscribe to a view of achieving equality by everyone treating each other equally badly and hating each other.

Yes I know what you think you said. You changed your point after being challenged about the insulting comments. You are fully entitled to do so. But whether you want to distinguish between your first post and what you claim is now your first point doesn't make those insults disappear.
Furthermore, what IS your point? People who consider themselves superior to others are 'fucking idiots ' or just feminists who think that? Because that doesn't make sense. |

No. What I am saying is misandry doesn't exist because there isn't a power structure that favours women, created by women. I'm pretty much repeating myself here, even though I'm pretty sure my point was clear. Those points are real and valid about cancer etc, no one is saying those issues are marginal, what is being said is this isn't' misandry' because women aren't responsible for the situations. Suicide for example - patriarchy is responsible for this, men have to be manly and can't express their feelings. It isn't misandry because it isn't happening as a result of a feminine power structure. |
