Half a cup of Butter?

Tries t'interweb:

Half a cup of butter = 1 stick.

Wtf? How heavy is a stick? (How long is a piece of string?)

This coconut pie recipe is turning out to be more complicated than understanding Mrs ddc...

Mr ddc

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong but half a cup is 125 ml. How that translates to weight of butter I don't know though.

Doesn't the depend on the specifc gravity of butter?

Bloody Americans.

Here you go, from Nigella's website.

Nigella's books are converted for the US and quite often the US edition is sold in other countries, Hence butter will appear in tablespoons and sticks, rather than as a given weight.

US butter is sold in 1/2 or 1 pound packages and divided into "sticks". Each stick weighs 1/4 pound/4 ounces/110g. One stick also contains 8 tablespoons and for convenience the packaging is marked with the tablespoon measures. Each tablespoon weighs 1/2 ounce which we usually equate to a metric weight of 15g.

Hope that helps and while we're on the topic... Mmmmmm, Nigella

Thanks Prof, and Chip,

4oz

There was another recipe that called for 'half and half', but back in my day that meant half a pint of ale with half a pint of bitter, which seemed a bit of a waste of good beer really!

its the uk thats a pain in the arse as the older generation used the cup method more than by weighing them out as that was only done at the shop where you bought your ingredients from

I find half a cup doesn't offer much support, full cup is better

I'm a guesser and trial and error but had no idea how much butter was in a stick.

Noone has ever been able to tell me how much shit is in a shitty stick. You'd think there would be a consistent standard.

My teacher told me at Junior school (many moons ago) that when asked the question 'how long is a piece of string?' answer with 'twice the distance from the middle to the end' - I've never forgotten it.

just to let you know...."we" are watching....

p.s are you still trying to make the coconut pie..... i was going to suggest you go to any good carribean bakery and they would sell you one..... but i can't imagine there are many in derbyshire....

if you try an independent bakery... they may be able to do one for you... thats what i do for proper "buttermilk biscuits" as even the posh bastards at M&S and Waitrose wont do them....

Knowledge is so important. One day, possibly faced with some quantum/mass balancing conundrum while rooted to the spot and with only a limited number of everyday(ish) objects to hand and being rapidly encircled by an angry mob of extraterrestrial flesh-eating monsters, this could prove to be of critical importance to your continued survival. And ability to bake biscuits.

You're right, the closest Derbyshire gets to ethnic food is when they stock Staffordshire Oatcakes, Yorkshire breadpudding and Eccles Cakes from Lancashire!

I'm going to struggle with the final recipe instruction - 'leave it alone until it's fully cold'.

Thinking of serving it with whipped cream laced with Malibu...

Get yourself down to the bakery/kitchen supplies shop and buy a measuring cup set. You'll be sorted for life then.

I like to sit outside a KFC ruminating on the pain and suffering that they inflict on their chickens. Sorry, maybe another thread ...

Half and half is the devil's seed.

US gallons are different to ours, so simple conversions are often not simple at all.

At least you did not call us "Yanks". I sit here with my stick of butter which is 4oz. net weight= 1/4 pound. By volume it is 8 tbsp.= 1/2 cup. 1/2 cup= 4 fl. oz. (fluid ounces of volume) I have trouble with this myself and I was born here. You can buy 2L of Coca-Cola or 1L of water. Other than that, people are very resistant to the metric system over here.

I just used to use a random cup or mug to measure the ingredients and it always worked. I only recently bothered to check (thanks Google) and found that a cup is 8oz.
