In past centuries, according to BBC4, pain was seen as an essential component of surgery, whatever they were doing to you! Surgeons were often remarkable for their speed - thank goodness. Though the surgeons apparently typically had much revulsion for what they had to do - I can't imagine advanced infections of the day.

Did anyone see The Knick on Sky Atlantic?
About a few innovative surgeons always pushing for new ways to conduct operations and improve success ratios.
It was set in 1900 so the equipment and methodology was so unrecognisable from what we now know - it was a wonder that any major surgery was successful. |

You still get the pus and pain after operations now but thankfully we have good antibiotics,painkillers and anaesthetics The staff I came in contact with during my recent operation were fantastic and quite humorous |
