I'm not religious so I don't give up anything for Lent.

That said, I'm on a low carb diet at the moment so there are already a lot of things I'm not eating, and haven't eaten for several weeks.

I wouldn't opt to give up anything else on top of bread, pasta, potatoes, pastry, crisps, chocolate, sweets, anything with sugar in, alcohol, ice cream, desserts, cakes, biscuits etc. etc.

We'll be following the 5:2 diet strictly for Lent, and going for a brisk, short walk together each evening.

If last year is anything to go by, I should be under 10st for first time in 25 years by Palm Sunday!

(Not sure if that warrants or )

Its more of a tradition than a religion, my grandma was very religious and my mum was a Sunday school teacher but never had it forced on us, however there are certain things I do that have been inbred in me, fish on a Friday(my dad was a catholic), and always gave something up for lent, went to church as a kid for palm sugar day and Easter, in fact I think Easter was more religious than Christmas and I enjoyed it because of the time of year and the traditions we had.

Anyway, I'm giving up icec coffee and milkshakes my two treats

Bit like new year resolutions why do folk who want to say give up smoking etc not just do it instead of just making and delaying empty promises just because it may sound good.

lent is about denying yourself of something for the 40 days of lent as that's when Jesus went off into the wilderness and faster and didn't give in to temptation

Both are going to be hard but I think bread might be harder and better for my waist line so bread it is

I was reading about the duration of lent in Wikipedia (so it must be true), it's 40 days and 40 nights from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday...which is more than 40 days...and it says that traditionally the fast isn't observed on the Sunday's of lent....bring on Sunday

Easter is more religious than Christmas. In the Christian calendar is THE big festival.

Just a heads up for you, Diamondsmiles, the Jewish festival of Purim is the day before your birthday this year.

I give up time in Lent and give it away to others.

It's actually longer than 40 days in linear days as Sundays don't count.

Purim is the festival even the non-Jewish Jews like: it's the one where you release your inhibitions for 24 hours, act daft and have as much fun as possible.

We have this discussion with our Catholic friends every year, as they include Lent up to Easter Day, and miss the Sundays.

We were taught Lent is the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness, ending on Palm Sunday. Then you have Holy Week. Afterall, how can Jesus be fasting while tucking into the Last Supper?

In truth I don't think it really matters, and just do which you prefer.
