Had heard the rumours but wasn't aware that from September anyone caught smoking in a car with an under 18 present will get an on the spot fine of £50.
I can't understand why smoking while driving is legal at all, mobile phones aren't allowed to be used while driving but smoking is.. I've seen plenty of people driving all over the place while they are trying to get their fag out the crack in the window or flick it in the ashtray! |

It changed to 18 years ago didn't it?
So you think driving along in a car with a baby or child in the back and possibly 2 adults smoking in the front is ok? |

I should add that I've been in the car with people smoking and most have been fine. I'm an ex smoker and it doesn't bother me people smoking around me at all.
But you do get folk who's attention span is terrible and they should be concentrating on driving, not smoking, eating, talking on the phone, changing a cd (my friend missed a lamppost by about an inch trying to tune her radio once years ago)
I'm glad that the children are being protected now, although I'm not sure how many people will get caught as I see people on phones every day still! |

or is it the only way to force parents to protect their own children..
its mind boggling that some people who smoke think its ok for their little uns to inhale tobacco smoke.. |

Well said,it's deplorable that people should be smoking whilst driving, especially with children in the vehicle,I've nothing against smokers or drug addicts but would anyone wish for their children to be exposed to crack smoke in a confined space? If not then by the same token then children should not be exposed to cigarette smoke unless theyre already on a habit of 20 fags a day |

Because the tax and fines makes far too much money. |

No, it was changed a few years ago.
While one can legally smoke at age 16, one can no longer legally buy cigarettes until one is 18.

Doesn't stop idiots smoking in the house with children. Plus the police are fucking useless at stopping people using their mobiles in the car or the twats who hog the middle Lane in the motorway. So I doubt this is anything more than publicity stunt |

My dad used to smoke in the car when we were little well before passive smoking was known but still he knows now what damage he did to us. As soon as my nephew was born and he had to take him in his car when they babysat he gave up smoking all together as he didnt want to repeat what he did to us and I think its right that people do not smoke around children especially babies x |
