We have a friend who was granted a medical card! When I asked him in what grounds he was entitled to a medical card he stated that because of his sexuality he was more prone to contacting diseases and std's !!
Surely i'm thinking ffs ?? |

"That's very unusual. Unless he is contracting something so often that he is considered to be high risk." well with out sounding too crude but apparently if you state your sexual preferences as in! Anal bareback your a high risk and entitled to free health care and drugs regardless of your means of income!

Dr visits are always free aren't they?
I have a medical exemption card for prescription costs etc but I thought you could only get one of those if your body didn't produce something that meant you had to take regular medication to replace it?
I think maybe he told you that to cover up the real reason for having it. |

Medical exemption cards are for free prescriptions only. They are only issued to people who have/are affected by certain health conditions ie. Diabetes, thyroid ect.. so I'm assuming your friend has one for a reason he doesn't wish to disclose x |

Think this post is for Irish forum and not public. Lots of people from other countries will give their side but for an Irish perspective it is not going to get a solution.
However. I don't know about the medical card. I paid for all mine and that's just because of my means testing. Although I was told my chances of getting it were good .
Thought I might as well chance my arm at the time. |

Maybe him being gay isn't the reason he has this card maybe he has a condition that he does not want others to know about so just uses his sexuality as a reason he thinks people will accept
Just a thought |

Looking online it seems medical cards in Ireland are purely means tested and not dependent on medical need or risk so the reasons in the OP seem inflammatory rather than truth (not saying the OP is lying but that the friend has perhaps said that to get a rise out of the fact he is gay).
Looking on the HSE website there is no mention of medial need or risk when looking to apply and it is all based on income and means tested. |

"Omg half this thread has him down as having secret aids lol!!! You can't just assume! A gay with a condition he doesn't want others to know about!"
No one said aids at all! There are a host of illnesses that qualify you for a medical exemption certificate in England. Diabetes, cancer etc. You were the only one to mention aids. |

Yep! In existence years! Best invention for the likes of low income families etc. Especially in times like now. |
