Announced that Zane Lowe is leaving.
Not everyone's cup of tea I know but he was in my opinion the only one still on the station that brought genuine credibility to a station that has turned into an extension of short attention span, shallow, pop culture, driven by image over content.
A station that really started to lose it once jo wiley left, and openly being ageist.
I used to listen to r1 from 6 in the morning till 8-9pm most days while going about my life.
Zane brought charisma, passion, insanity a genuine love of music new and old and has done a fantastic job filling the shoes of the late great John peel.
Yes Zane could be loud, opinionated and a bit brash.
But he has had some amazing shows.
Most memorable being the amazing Kanye West interview and the brilliant killers live performance a few years.
So farewell Zane goodbye and the best for the future.
As for r1.
Apart from Greg James show think I will be tuning into absolute 80's from now on. |

I have to admit, its been a very long time since I listened to radio 1. Loved John Peel and Annie Nightingale through the night about a zillion years ago.
Now a radio 2 listener, yup pipe and slippers time me thinks. |

As you are not the demographic they are aiming for I don't think the-powers-that-be will be losing too much sleep. |

I listened to John Peel for years, for me radio one went a bit stale when he passed away. Zane Lowe has been a breath of fresh air, amazing live too. Back to boring Radio again I guess....... |

Radio 1 has been going downhill for years. The rather gorgeous Sara Cox was good on there, nice to hear her on Radio 2 now. She was great when she stood in for Steve Wright a bit back. Talented broadcaster. |

No but my daughter is and all her friends. They all listened to Zane Lowe and hate nick grimshaw.
They are all going to stop listening.
They are going to lose massive student audience with the departure of Zane.
Annie mac taking over who I like but not in same league as Lowe. |

I stopped listening to Radio 1 in 2002 when Marc & Lard left.
I completely stopped listening to music radio shortly after when the same songs were constantly being played.
I used to listen to a lot of 5live & talk sport but even those are boring now. So I have my iPhone with podcasts and my own music in different playlists and I'm happy |

"I stopped listening when Mark and Lard left
Twas a sad day indeed.
Stop........
" .Get yourself a digital radio and get on radio 6. Marks on there and quite frankly the music is brilliant and during the dull bits flick over to radio 5 ( plenty of interesting interviews and discussions).
And then over to Jeremy on radio 2 for some good old right wing phone in. |

"Radio 1 is for young people.
And therefore should be hosted by young people. Even Zane had to start somewhere. "
Indeed. Radio 2 and Radio 4 for us, erm, more mature individuals. Internet radio is great for diversity, too. 10 minutes of a bible thumping station from the deep south playing gospel is great. Only 10 minutes, mind. But that is longer than I can put up with Radio 1. Pass me my slippers. |

Well, as your OP never mentioned your daughter and her friends my initial post was based purely on you saying you would stop listening.
Still, if you, your daughter, her friends and whomever decide to stop listening to Radio 1 all together due to the loss of someone who contributed less than 5% of their total output then that is your prerogative. |

Totally right.
I stopped listening years ago - at the point where the target audience blatantly became 16 - 24 and the DJs stared talking in the radio equivalent of text speak.
Inane, dumb, patronising, mindless drivel.
The shame of it is that Radio 1 still plays the best new music across all genres so it's difficult to keep up to speed without listening.
Radio 2 has inherited some brilliant DJs from Radio 1 - Jo Wiley, Simon Mayo, Mark Radcliffe, Trevor Nelson, All incredibly knowledgeable and listenable.
Plus add Evans, Wright, Ball, Pearce, Cox and Radio 2 is a bit of a Radio 1 scrapheap!

I listen to Radio One every day, but find myself flicking over to R2 sometimes, and it seems to be getting more lately.
Radio One started losing its way when it started taking itself too seriously, sometime after they binned the roadshows, Steve Wright etc. |

Haven't listened to R1 regularly for years. Too much chat and nit enough music especially in the mornings. I prefer Kiss
Do like Zane Lowe tho and think it's a shame they are losing him. |

He's brought a lot of attention on music that's now enjoyed by millions, and is clearly mega passionate about music. A loss to UK music, and a gain for the fruity corporate lot |

Hasn't it always been so?, I'm sure anyone listening in the eighties would lament the lack of dlt/edmonds/wogan even. The dj roster moves in cycles the same as the music, Jo Wiley or Zane Lowe were only the corporate 'underground' anyway, even Peel was 80% junk (though the 20% was worth sitting through). |

You do know that Zane Lowe never actually found new artists or put his playlist together for his shows. I think a real DJ is someone who can actually mix, someone who learnt their craft with vinyls and and can beat match without technology! I know most people use cdj's now but I don't class so done who just plays songs as a DJ.
Anyway back to the op, I won't miss him that's for sure, I hardly ever listen to radio one, if I'm in the car it's CDs or my kicks radio stations, heart, nation etc
I listen to B Traites on radio 1 early hours but not live.
Gone are the days when I used to tape songs off the radio, Friday night on radio 1 and it's all gone a bit pete tong!
Would listen to judge jules, even on a Sunday after the chart show you'd have trance anthems with dave penis! Ahh reminds me of the good old days! |

That is a real shame.. Zane Lowe and Greg James are the only two I really look forward to, as they always introduce me to things I haven't heard before... Apart from that R1 drives me mad with the constant chatting of the DJs and the constant celebrity brown nosing. |

"RadioOne for me was at it's peek 20 plus years ago when it was worth listening to all day long, maybe it's just the music they play now that I can't stand "
the very reasons i won't tune in anymore modern music on the whole is awful with the odd decent tune thrown in |
