I'm interested in the universe, time and quantum physics but after one or two sentences my brain begins to realise that I am reading or listening to English but I have no idea what words in that order mean.

As Monty Pyhon once sang:

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving

And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour.

Thas orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned,

A sun that is the source of all our power.

The sun, and you and me, and all the stars that we can see,

Are moving at a million miles a day,

In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,

Of a galaxy we call the Milky Way.

Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars;

It's a hundred thousand light-years side to side;

It bulges in the middle sixteen thousand light-years thick,

But out by us it's just three thousand light-years wide.

We're thirty thousand light-years from Galactic Central Point,

We go 'round every two hundred million years;

And our galaxy itself is only one of millions of billions

In this amazing and expanding universe.

That always helped me

How many light years in a normal year?

A light year is a distance, not a time.

It's the distance covered by travelling at the speed of light for a year.

I always wonder how is it we are just the right distance from the sun to exist? Any closer we would burn up and any further away and we would freeze.

The Brian Cox thing was a new angle (to me) on alien life and it brought home our frigelity (excuse spelling). He postulated that as the time that any life type is around is very short, that even if aliens exist(ed) it's very possible that we would never be around at the same time!

Because if we weren't, we would never have come to be to know about it.

We evolved because conditions were right for it to happen.

Or because God made it that way, for the creationists.

Is ok those boffins at the hadron collider in Geneva are probably making little black holes here on earth, so no need to travel 27000 light years away.

Watched something with Stephen hawking taking about different theory's of alien life.

He talked about if intelligent life understands E=MC2 then they might be destroying themselves before we will ever find them.

Also the theory of nomadic aliens who are far more technologically advanced than we are, who have extinguished all their planets resources and now move planet to planet. Also talked about harnessing a stars energy by launching thousands of solar panels directly facing a star.

The possibility of life not as we know it existing. Life that runs on nitrogen for example.

All very interesting hard to get your head around stuff

There's only one light year in a normal year! It's the unit used to denote the distance it takes light to travel per year (fucking fast!).....or something like that,I ain't no Stephen Hawking n couldn't be bothered googling it lol

Not necessarily the only place for water to exist, which seems to be the vital ingredient for life to have a chance.there could be liquid water under the surfaces of moons close to massive planets way out of the goldilocks zone.

Here's another thought..you can only ask that question because we are in the right place..we could well be only intelligence able to ask that question

Some of the creationist stuff is just as interesting as the scientific stuff, i watched "The theory of everything" documentary on youtube by Trey Smith, different dimensions and some of his theories were a real eye opener.

"Is anyone interested in the universe, I'm quite fascinated but my brain doesn't accept that kind of information

"

.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, the human brain is incapable of imagining the sizes involved in the universe.

It's why they call it mind boggling distances.

There are plenty of short films on you tube that try to explain sizes and distances.

The most famous one goes something along the lines of.

If you shrink the earth to a tennis ball and use that scale the moon would be a marble size and there would be a 2meter gap between the two in a straight line you can then add on other objects on that scale, the sun would be about the size of a house and would be about 750m away, Neptune being the furthest planet would be about the size of a Mellon and around 15 miles away and the next nearest star which is centuri would be a bungerlow size and would be on that straight line scale.... 250 thousand miles away!.

The sun is not a particularly big star in fact there's stars out there that dwarf it. The biggest one to date is 2000 times bigger than the sun and if it were in our solar system it's edge would be out around Saturn.

I don't believe in an all powerful God.

I think humans may just be another form of energy.

There are many forms of energy we know about and the law of conservation of energy has it that in a closed system, energy can be neither created or destroyed, merely converted to another type of energy.

So maybe our body is physical and our essence in energy and when we die, the energy rejoins an energy pool.

It seems feasible to me. So I consider myself an atheist but open to the idea of there being something beyond physical death.

The energy idea certainly fits with a lot of very ancient beliefs with concepts of chi and chakras and other forms of spiritual energy.

Afterlife could just mean that we move over into a different dimension, so i don't think its weird. Spirits could be beings that have learned how to move between different dimensions, i also think aliens could be inter dimensional beings, rather than coming here from planets thousands of light years away, coming from a different dimension is a more realistic theory.

I was commenting on the "soul". If you believe it dies, that's up to you. I believe it's possible it continues on as spiritual energy.

What always fascinates me is people's inability to accept the possibility that there is other life in the universe, and don't really see our planet as "part of space".

Look at everything that is happening on our planet, the technology we have, the way life has evolved, our history. And the billions of other planets we are told float out there. Can we really be that unique? Still reading? Well done! o_0

Why think about it, what really matters is here and now its actually quite small compared too God's (or creation through big bang) overall creation which is us, this will do your heads in even more .. Gaze at stars tonight you are actually seeing history, the light takes that long to reach our solar system.

"I've found the whole thing interesting since I was an early teen...later after ..yes startrek, I found myself questioning lots of things..

to me its now really a thing about perception of reality, other dimesions etc etc..they have all led me to believe we know fuckloads of stuff...but also know much less about the very basics of "life"..and indeed "death"

religious types will says theres an afterlife

atheists will say there isnt

scientists will say there isnt, but will seay theres different dimensions..etc etc..

all I can think is really we are just like a big restarting pulse..its probably a really simple auto generated algorithm

I'm an atheist who believes there may be spirits and an afterlife. Does that make me weird?

Afterlife could just mean that we move over into a different dimension, so i don't think its weird. Spirits could be beings that have learned how to move between different dimensions, i also think aliens could be inter dimensional beings, rather than coming here from planets thousands of light years away, coming from a different dimension is a more realistic theory."

here is my theory:

apes

humans

machines

(this is just in our solar system mind)

I think progressing into machines will be the next big step...either we become them, or they destroy us..

imagine if u will, living close to universal anomalies like black holes etc etc..the only way I can see for long periods of time would be to be a machine.

our tech is here already..cybernetics is the first step. we are all almost cyborg with our attachments to tech..it'll get more intense as the future goes on.

so long windedly my theory is, we wont understand the universe until 'we' can even break out of this galaxy..understand how our 'laws' on life/death/existence might just be tarnished by our short incomprehensible knowledge of whats involved in living in a universe..some of us though..are happy where we are, fair play...but I seek questions,answers....and maybe even a good otherworldly shag.

I was commenting on the "soul". If you believe it dies, that's up to you. I believe it's possible it continues on as spiritual energy."

VV I believe something similar to you, the soul moving onto a new place/realm/state... Difficult to explain my thoughts on this one, but reincarnation certainly fits into it...

just open minded I guess...so many claim they are when they truly arent

I don't believe in an all powerful God.

I think humans may just be another form of energy.

There are many forms of energy we know about and the law of conservation of energy has it that in a closed system, energy can be neither created or destroyed, merely converted to another type of energy.

So maybe our body is physical and our essence in energy and when we die, the energy rejoins an energy pool.

It seems feasible to me. So I consider myself an atheist but open to the idea of there being something beyond physical death.

The energy idea certainly fits with a lot of very ancient beliefs with concepts of chi and chakras and other forms of spiritual energy..

The physical body certainly does live on, all the atoms that make it get recycled into something else.

It's not actually the body that dies and disappears but more than likely the "soul" does.

I was commenting on the "soul". If you believe it dies, that's up to you. I believe it's possible it continues on as spiritual energy."

.

It's possible! But then nearly everything has energy so is a carrot living on as well.

right head explode time:

we (every sentient being)(maybe even some that arent classed as sentient!), are a universe unto ourselves.

something can be as real as mince to me, but not to another.

now..if I have enough power(energy) to influence someone into MY way of thinking I therefore affect matter(mind over matter)

when i'm dead...my influence carries on..

the energy has been used...but it still goes on...so in that respect..the anthropic principle may be working but it must be linked to some network of energy*thought)...so when we die...do we truly die..

I think we are mere fractals in the gianticness of everything...our tiny bacteria may see us as massive huge planets etc etc...they have no concept of 'time' but who knows...inside that one lil cell they have...could be a conscious being..incaple of communicating with us, or us with them.

*just read yesterday about storing info in genes...they go into the craziest bytes that can be stored in a gene..its amazing really...so again that only leads me to believe..there is something greater...but there is something lesser...but I think somehow..the more we understand about each, we understand about ourselves.

ok d*unk nerd out..fancy a shag?

Lol you haven't become anything all your intelligence is learnt to you by other humans, if you'd been born and left alone in a remote jungle in south america, you'd have no more consciousness than a sloth and you certainly wouldn't be removed from the natural order.

It strikes me that everybody's theory for life after death just revolves around the concept of them not dying!.... Everything's possible, but is it likely?.

What's the most likely answer, crazy mumbo jumbo involving alot of assumptions or that were just highly evolved primates that just die like every other living creature before us did.

The furthest things we are seeing out there are around 15 billion light years.....so thats your speed of light at 186 000 miles per second and travelling at that speed for that length of time. We are just a tad small and insignificant....and GOD..since we invented him....really is no answer at all. If an ant on the ground had to deal with knowing that there was an ocean thousands of miles wide and several miles deep he'd no doubt stuggle with it and and come a similaly stupid explamation.....!

The thing that gobsmackes me about space is that the probe that was launched sometime in the 70s (In think) has just reached the end of our known galaxy. For it to reach the next planet or object whatever it is,is going to take something like 40 billion years before it even reaches it.That distance takes a lot of belief for the human mind to grasp.

BLONDECAZ: Are you familiar with physical forms of pleasure?

Its definitely fascinating and love the documentaries. I might have to build a model on my floor, representing the distances between us, planets and stars, to get some kind of grasp of the relative distances - that bit has always eluded my understanding.

I was commenting on the "soul". If you believe it dies, that's up to you. I believe it's possible it continues on as spiritual energy..

It's possible! But then nearly everything has energy so is a carrot living on as well.

You believe carrots have spiritual energy?

Ok, it takes all sorts, I suppose..

Why would a carrot have less spiritual energy than you or i. It's a living thing isn't it. its a living orgasm... Joke.. A living organism we are different because we are alive and not part of the natural order we become conscious spiritual beings. Goodnight and happy fucking people xx.

"

yeah and sloths probably more sociable and dying we all gotta do it, you maybe an evolved monkey, but not myself thankyou I have faith, put me any where by myself in the world and I survive, because I can live with myself "its not about living forever Jackie, its if you can live with yourself"

Costa Blanca Spain...

I can get my head around the distances (ish) but what puts a spanner in the works is time.

So you get a big telescope and look out at the edge of the known universe, believed to be around 13 billion light years away. So the light you are looking at set off 13 billion years ago. It is estimated that our sun (a pretty average star) has a lifespan of around 8 billion years so the likelihood is that what you see at 13 billion light years away no longer exists.

Then there is the other question. What is beyond the 13 billion year boundary? Maybe there is a whole new universe that we can't see because the light hasn't reached us yet, but then again it could have existed and died without us even seeing it.

I need a brandy.

So with time being a dimension....

Bending the length of something

Take a piece of string point A at one end point B at the other. Takes very little force to bend the string to move the points together

Take a piece of metal and do the same, just takes a bit more force to bend

Surely with enough force you can bend the dimension of time to bring 2 points closer together

They know the rudimentary aspects of time travel already, building a machine is slightly harder.

Gravitational pull, the more mass it has the bigger the pull, so to escape the moons gravity you only need to be doing 5000 mph where as here on earth you need 25000 mph or 7 miles per second to avoid being sucked back down.

If you landed on Jupiter you'd need 130,000mph or 32 miles per second to escape it's pull.

50 miles per second for the sun 3000 miles per second for a neutron star and black holes have so much pull even light doing 180,000 miles per second gets sucked back in.

Therefore all you need is alot of pull to bend time or light.

I was once trapped on this website by the pull of one particular naked bum picture for a week!. Imagine the pull of all the combined naked bum pictures!!.

I might be trapped on here for 3 months... Or even as some have theorised that the super bum exists, this has the potential pull to hold me here forever

"As Monty Pyhon once sang:

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving

And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour.

Thas orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned,

A sun that is the source of all our power.

The sun, and you and me, and all the stars that we can see,

Are moving at a million miles a day,

In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,

Of a galaxy we call the Milky Way.

Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars;

It's a hundred thousand light-years side to side;

It bulges in the middle sixteen thousand light-years thick,

But out by us it's just three thousand light-years wide.

We're thirty thousand light-years from Galactic Central Point,

We go 'round every two hundred million years;

And our galaxy itself is only one of millions of billions

In this amazing and expanding universe.

That always helped me

"

Puts everything in to perspective that..

It means travelling at the speed of light it would take you 27000 years to reach your destination. I was going to watch horizon tonight it was about a black hole eating things up 27000 light years away but thought my brain might explode

Is ok those boffins at the hadron collider in Geneva are probably making little black holes here on earth, so no need to travel 27000 light years away. "

to me its now really a thing about perception of reality, other dimesions etc etc..they have all led me to believe we know fuckloads of stuff...but also know much less about the very basics of "life"..and indeed "death"

religious types will says theres an afterlife

atheists will say there isnt

scientists will say there isnt, but will seay theres different dimensions..etc etc..

all I can think is really we are just like a big restarting pulse..its probably a really simple auto generated algorithm

I'm an atheist who believes there may be spirits and an afterlife. Does that make me weird?

just open minded I guess...so many claim they are when they truly arent"

Light travels at about 670million miles an hour so you have to times that by 24 for the day then by 365 for the year, that's how long a light year is in miles,a fucking lot and a place far far away, even further than never never land lol.

Just watching something called aliens the definitive guide. Talking about the possibility of life,

Hubble can see 100 billion galaxy's each Galaxy has 100 billion stars

100 billion x 100 billion = 10 sextillion or 10000000000000000000000 stars.......gotta be a planet with life on it around one of those stars

1 light year is the distance light can travel in vacuum in one year’s time. This distance is equivalent to roughly 9,461,000,000,000 km or 5,878,000,000,000 miles.

A light year is a distance. We observe light travelling at 300,000,000 metres per second, so it is a huge distance.

Light takes 8 minutes to get to us from the Sun, over 200 million years to get to us from the Andromeda Galaxy .... but ... if you were travelling on that ray of light, no time would pass at all!

I speak as a theoretical physicist.

"right head explode time:

we (every sentient being)(maybe even some that arent classed as sentient!), are a universe unto ourselves.

something can be as real as mince to me, but not to another.

now..if I have enough power(energy) to influence someone into MY way of thinking I therefore affect matter(mind over matter)

when i'm dead...my influence carries on..

the energy has been used...but it still goes on...so in that respect..the anthropic principle may be working but it must be linked to some network of energy*thought)...so when we die...do we truly die..

I very much enjoy thinking about this subject. I have always considered myself a logical agnostic and discipline of science.

I choose those words specifically because I now believe science to be a form of religion.

Absurd some of you might suggest but I would willingly debate my reasoning.

Science is all about theory, probability and most importantly belief.

Even Newton and Einstein, accepted as two of the greatest scientific minds to live, were proven to be absolutely wrong in a number of their key theories.

I am drawn more and more to the view that any theory is wrong and any theory is right. If we can imagine it, it may well be possible in this multi-verse or multi dimension.

We don't know the speed of light, we believe it.

To consider the life of a carrot, sloth, human, monkey, virus or what have you.

Take a single cell. Not sentient, by our standards. Either generic or complex, it is a collection of chemicals, proteins etc, working as a team to exist, survive, and ultimately reproduce.

You, as a person, is a larger collection of cells, doing the same thing.

A virus, bacteria, vegetables, the list goes on. If it can reproduce, it will try to, passing on it's genes.

There are organisms that survive without oxygen, can remain dormant without water, survive being frozen. If it can occur here, why not elsewhere?

Of course religion changes when it's proven to be wrong. Catholic belief in the middle ages is very different to now. The official Catholic church no longer believes that Hell exists, never mind that the earth is not the centre of the universe.

Yes fundamentalists cling on but there are plenty scientists that also cling on to their unproven theories.

Brighton - even Hove!

Lightyears are too small a unit, so we can use parsecs too. That's about 3.26 times bigger than a lightyear. Then we have mega, kilo and gigaparsecs which are used for measuring distances to quasars.

The 'Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy' had it right - it's called space because there's lots of it.
