What a harrowing storyline?

For me personally I found it disturbing, simply because I've witnessed/experienced similar situations.

I do believe that script writers, whilst want to draw in the crowd/_iewers sometimes "concoct" scenarios that shock!

I'm totally disgusted with Eastenders tonight, I will not be watching it again!

really????

now i dont want to belittle your exprience and i have no doubt that going through something like that would leave someone with emotional scars etc

however, i think we have to look at it in context. The script writers are not making a mockery of house/pub fires. They didnt 'magic' anyne to safety (although they did show people running back into a burning building which is perhaps irresponsible)

Eastenders is a soap opera made to reflect things that happen in real life. a lot of research goes into storylines to make sure that the characters portray as close to real life emotions (yeah yeah i know, even on eastendes!!)

again, i am sorry to hear that you had a similar experience earlier in your life and your opinion is your opinion but i thought tonights episode was quite good (especially when peggy looked like ET when she went back in to save phil )

Alot of the soaps are axing some of their main characters... is this the beginning of the end?

I had no idea that Lilly could be Ryans baby though

As if this sort of thing happens in anyway shape of form in my life. The storylines are becoming sensationalistic and unbelievable. I used to watch it, but I don;t go out of my way to now.

i would rather watch the go compair advert on a loop for an hour than watch that tripe

stageringly , it was fearured recently on one of those "out take" proggrames

it seems they need to do about 6 takes to do the most basic of scetches like a bloke going up the bar and saying "a pint of lager please"

they end up stitching about four bits and pieces together , so theres a cognicent sentance

but they forget he has a hat on in the beggining , not in the middle , then on again as he says the word "lager"

cretins

Understanding soaps is simple, scriptwriters attempt to show true life and how people deal or don't deal with it.

Every storyline has happened/is happening/will happen somewhere in the UK, the scriptwriters only have a small set to portray all the goings on, so it can seem that the whole world is falling down in one street, it can seem that all the residents are either in a cafe all the time or in a pub, but how else do you get them altogether.

I haven't watched Eastenders in as long as I can remember, I always found it depressing, I always felt that the scriptwriters in thier attempts to portray real life seemed to be stuck in the rut of only seeing the downside of life, any happiness arriving in the square is always shortlived and revenge is just around the corner.

Some soaps do manage to deal with the drugs, the gay community, the PC brigage, the righteous and indignant and everyday life while still injecting a little happiness in to some of the characters lives.

The OP made the only intelligent choice, if you don't like it don't watch it.

Any storyline in a television programme /news programme and the media will touch someone somewhere........you can't blame the telly for mentioning something that has upset you for real.

And Eastenders was rubbish..all that squealing hurt my ears !!

You must have shares in an ear plug company !!

Anyway what happened was............phil set light to the pub with him in it, he got squished while trying to rob the till while the flames are flicking round his nuts, Billy and peggy ( while looking like part ET and part gremlin with a dirty face) got superstrength and pull the bar off the top of Phil and saved him....and everyone screamed a lot.

thats it?

Poor old Kat Slater was sexually abused by her uncle as a child

Poor old little mo was subjected to years of domestic abuse and then raped and left pregnant

Poor little Ben was abused by his step mum

All situations that also happen in real life

And a pub fired offensive?!!

i must be missing something here? lol

I seriously don't get the OP's point at all...harrowing, disturbing, disgusted and won't watch it again. I'm not a big soap fan but if the script writers couldn't write about a fire because someone somewhere knew someone who had died in a fire, or couldn't write about domestic abuse, sexual abuse, alcoholism, car crashes all because someone had experienced one of these things then they'd be as well giving up as they wouldn't be able to write about anything.
