Is X factor and the like dumbing down/killing music

Could just be me but I don't think so. To me it is nothing more than glorified karaoke.
I could go on about the lack of creativity and soullessness of the x factor types but I wont instead I will take a quote from the melody maker about The Sundays and their song summertime "if you opened a window into heaven, this is what it would sound like". I cant imagine anyone using such words to describe anything from the x factor. Could be I'm just getting old lol. |

The concept of X factor is nothing new. Corporations have been churning out bands and shitty music for decades.
Look at Beyoncé. The most overrated "musician" around. She may be able to sing but it that's it and she has been around forever. |

X factor n such like are just money making machines and tv fodder for the lowest common denominator.Utter pish!
Not sure if that effects the rest of the music scene or not but think those whose love of their art is genuine will shine through regardless, if they're making good music (matter of opinion) as opposed to idiots who just want to be 'famous' n on tv.

There is some good music around but it is thin on the ground. Yes the corporations have been up to this for years but I don't feel there comparison to the 80's and 90's when independent record labels were competing with the big boys by signing home grown talent, take the Manchester scene for instance talk about bigger than the Beatles lol, |

The x factor will always have mass appeal . Its just like the pop charts of the eighties and nineties.
Creative bands and artist will always be there on the fringes. Some will brake through to the mainstream.
Its great to see listener figures if radio stations like six music increasing.

just remember "the Monkeys " were a maunfactured "boy band all those years ago as were the Beatles to a certain extent
and "the King" AKA Elvis didnt write any of his hits
so realy is nothing new |

There's always great music around. It's just not always heavily promoted. Have a dig around online. The charts don't really reflect what's actually available. |

When some band/group/artist emerges from the fringes and becomes popular you usually hear they've "sold out".
Some of you music snobs should apply the Fab maxim of 'Everyone is entitled to preferences' and stop feeling so superior because you like artists few of the general populace have heard of. |

I sometimes wonder if those people who rave about a "performance" let's for example say Alexandra Burke's rendition of Hallelujah have any clue about the history of the song, previous versions or the creative talents of the original author. I often suspect not. |

the monkeys and elvis still sound great today .. nothing that is churned out of X factor machine or from todays pop chart music industry will sound good next year.. |

Berry Gordy was out cowelling Cowel 50yrs ago, like others have said it's nothing new, with so many different ways to get your work out now if anything I'd say it's easier for musicians (as opposed to performers). |

record labels unconnected with Cowell still sign acts. Its a TV show some people watch, does it mean that they only exclusively like that style or type of music? No.
The real enemy of the music business is the vast array of choice that you now have thanks to the digital age. Whereas you may have took what was on the radio as the thing of the day, there are many more outlets, Cowell's show being but one. |

From my own personal experience, there is a massive amount of luck in becoming a successful artist. I have been in three bands who were signed but never got anywhere.
To make the big time, not only do you need the right people to see you at the right time.... But you also need the right hole in the market that needs filling.
There's a friend of mine who almost made it a few years ago. He is an acoustic singer/songwriter, but unfortunately his first single was released at the same time as Daniel Powter's "Had a Bad Day" and James Blunt's Beautiful.... Two of the biggest songs of the naughty's. My friends song peaked at 42 in the chart and although he is still in the industry, his shot was missed. |

Yea, similar shows like "opportunity knocks", which started in the 60's (I think). Which was a tv show for new acts, that's where the likes of les dawson shot to fame. |

There's always bands and musics beyond TV and the charts. Always has been, just maybe 10-20 years ago the stuff on TV and the charts was what you liked. |

There's always been talent shows. From Opportunity Knocks to New Faces to even Stars in their Eyes.
It's just xfactor is big and flash.
Anyhow all modern music is shite  I'll go back to listening to the old stuff.... Prodigy, SL2 and other early 90s dance  |

I wouldn't say beyonce is overrated. She is a fantastic singer and dancer and her performances are always amazing. I never really have her much thought till I saw her in Glastonbury, totally changed my opinion of her. |

Personally not a fan of the shows but look at current popular music.... You only have one maybe two artist/bands from shows of the like of x factor.... Currently just look at the wealth of British talent smashing the music industry internationally British music in a strong place |

X-factor is shite. Bland instantly forgetable music performed by in the main bland instantly forgettable artists. But that's how the music business works, find a winning formula/concept and maximise it. It's not that different to stock aitkin and waterman's hit factory in the 80's
The music business has changed massively in the last 20 years, the x-factor is part of that change. But change, or evolution isn't all bad.
Personally the loss of a seemingly never ending list of small venues is far more of a worry. |

Of course it isn't. Music has been maufactured for decades. All XFactor is doing is making that process a public spectacle. For every One Direction there will also be an Ed Sheeran. |
