The Saudi Arabian justice system often times punishes criminals using the ancient "an eye for an eye" system. But what do you do with a defendant whose attack left a man paralyzed? Well, you try to paralyze him too, apparently.
A Saudi judge has asked several hospitals whether they would conduct surgery on a man's spinal cord so he's left paralyzed, just like he left his victim paralyzed when he attacked him with a cleaver.
At least one hospital has refused to do it on ethical grounds, saying, "inflicting such harm is not possible." The other hospitals either haven't responded yet, or their responses were not made public.
The victim in this case is the one who asked the judge that his attacker suffers as he has -- a request that is allowed under what is called "Sharia law." The most common and famous example of this law is cutting off the hands of thieves, at the request of the theft victim.
Putting aside the punishment phase, a human rights group say the actual trials in Saudi Arabia fall far below international standards. They usually take place behind closed doors and without adequate legal representation.
Those who are sentenced to death are often not informed of the progress of legal proceedings against them or of the date of execution -- until the morning on which they are taken out and beheaded.
The headless body can then be crucified in a public place as a way to set an example, according to the kingdom's strict interpretation of Islam.
I read this a little while back and the bike accident thread made me think again about retribution against the criminals opposed to community service. |

The Law exists to punish the perpetrators and appease the victims with one single judgement. An eye-for-an-eye leaves another 'victim' - his or her family who have to look after him because he has no hands/eyes/legs etc..
I've said it before on other threads. I do not agree with execution in any capacity, and nor do I agree with legalised maiming in the name of fair play. I much prefer to see criminals locked away in a cell where there only view of the world they will never again rejoin is though a 3-barred window.
That would appease me. |

LOL It depends on the community service.
If they were made to clean up body parts and blood from motorway crashes day in day out for say 5 years that would appeal.
I'm confident the majority of these sort of criminals would have committed suicied by year 3. |

What about say a crim causes someone to lose an arm. Now we have the technology to do transplants. Should the victim have the option of demanding the crim's arm? |

Thats a good one but i figure the do gooders would say you were putting the perp in danger being around blood that could be potentially contaminated. I think it would make the offenders think twice though. |

They DO say that there's VERY little crime in Saudi though...
"
S'cos they're all rich fuckers from the oil WE taught them to get out the fookin ground so they didn't have to wander around the desert anymore squabbling amongst themselves over an oasis with a couple of fookin coconut trees in it. |

Retribution is never the answer but repeatedly you hear stories of the punishments of offenders in this country not fitting the crime. All I ever wanted from the person that hit me and killed my baby with their moped was a show of remorse an apology and a fitting punishment. However the person chose to plead not guilty put me through the horrors of appearing in court after which he and his family cheered loudly at his lack of a custodial sentence.
I'm wondering if these people actually had to see the results of the damage they cause have to clear up the guts spilled on the floor and the children and babies in the morgue they might think twice about it. |

If people carry on with the snide and downright offensive remarks about another poster then you will be banned without any further reminders. |

Just read the articel and you've bought into the scaremongering sensationalism of the media. It's topical to quote the word 'sharia' as it sells papers, but the reality of this particular article is that those so called 'muslims' are in prison because they are nothing more than scumbags who broke not only our laws, but their own 'sharia' laws too, or they wouldn't be where they are now. The intimidation detailed in the Telegraph article is nothing more than one bunch of bullies imposing their will on a lesser bunch of bullies. Prison life is very different from life on the outside where the pettiest thing can result in a damn good hiding in the showers - or far worse.
These particular 'muslims' are ruling by majority & fear, as has always been the case, right across the ages. |

I personally don't give a Thomas Tit what they do to each other in their own country, as long as that's where it stays. Saudi Arabia certainly wouldn't be amongst my top 10 holiday destinations - as the song says -"if you have breasts, a vagina, clitoris and labia, stay the hell away from Saudi Arabia |
