I don't drink coffee, and I've lived in Yorkshire long enough to not hand over £3 for a drink with cream and sugar in. But if I had to go into a coffee shop I'd go for Caffe Nero. They do a lovely panettone. |

Ah, but I choose based on the one that makes coffee I consider drinkable. I couldn't care less about being cool as long as I get my caffeine fix. |

I would love to know what arbitrary scale of coolness you are consulting to decide what coffee shops come under.
Costa is OK, but Starbucks is full of hipsters. To be honest, I prefer Bettys Tearooms but you need to take out a loan to afford to buy anything there. |

Starbucks is for students, who want to pay for overpriced, horrible tasting coffee/drinks, trying to look as hip as us Costa, super amazing tasting coffee consumers |

I can say with complete authority that York does not lack coffee shops in any way. We have the full selection, plus the odd independent. |

"Neither its just a drink ffs I can buy a jar of coffee for what they charge for a cup
My salary and their pricing structure move in different circles...lol"
The amount of calories in some of the fancier drinks would definitely help me pass by without going in. |

I don't drink coffee but i do drink tea...
Starbucks breakfast tea is a bit odd, their earl Grey is pretty delish tho
Costa tea is yummy coz it's twinings. And they never charge me extra when I have a large one with two different bags.
Costa is British, Starbucks is American
I don't want the person making my tea to know my name so I guess Costa wins

"That is the Question...
You can tell a lot from a person's preference.
Like choosing Costa over Starbucks, simply means you are a cooler guy/woman
" . Costa must be serving customer needs well. The share price of the holding company Whitbread has gone up 500% in the last five years and is still rising . |

I'm not surprised their business model is fantastic, take a cheap product and sell it at a massive premium. |

Neither.
There is a fantastic independent coffee shop in my town that knows my order when I walk in, knows my name, doesn't rush me out the door and does suspended coffees and actually allows homeless people to sit down in the warmth to drink them. Gets my vote and money every time. |

Starbucks, large filter, room for milk please.
You get about a pint of decent coffee (served by the person behind the till without having to wait) for less than 2 quid.
Not cool, but if I'm out and about and want coffee; I want coffee!
Every time I've been to Nero's (apart from once, when I actually sat down with someone for a coffee) the coffee has been cool enough and small enough finished me to have finished by the time I'm out the door! |

Neither. There are a few independent coffee/tea places near me. I prefer those. |

If in York then Bennetts does a great breakfast and they've got a cracking view of the Minster!
As for coffee I frequent Waitrose. One free latte every day on production of my loyalty card. |

"Nothing better than some independent coffee shops..."
When I could drink coffee I used to go in a little cafe run by a lovely Italian family and have a cappuccino. It was a weekly shopping trip treat with my mum |

Ok, after quite a few of you guys saying Nero is your first choice, I decided to test it out for myslef, to see what the rave was about
It lead me to the final conclusion that you must have been born with faulty taste buds or just a deluded idea of how a good cup of coffee is supposed to taste

"Cant believe that people still use Starbucks considering the public outrage at their tax affairs.
Personally I prefer Costa as the coffee tastes stronger."
Starbucks aren't the only ones with tax issues. Would you boycott everyone?
People like what they like, I like Starbucks. |

I only ever drink coffee with a goodly dash of cream in and I prefer just a small cup. None of that fancy pants stuff.
The best so far is Neros, a close second is the divine restaurant in Leicester called The White Peacock where, for £1.60 I can get an excellent cup, beautifully served by waiters who happen to be a little easy on the eye. |

"Costas...... Starbucks is too strong...and they keep asking for your name... And when i tell them they can never understand my broad bristolian accent and i have to keep repeating myself... "
That's when you can have fun though and just give them different names |

Costa their foods not very good, Starbucks don't deserve to be in this country as they don't pay their dues.
Rather frequent the smaller proper Italian place or make my own. |

"I have never been to a coffee shop and don't plan to either. "
Its a fucker, what I find is:
Them: Hi what can I get you.
Me: A coffee please.
If only it was that simple, what follows for 3 minutes is you trying to work out what each coffee is, wether you have a flavour in it and then finally what size?
Plus, to drink in or take away.
It gives me a headache. |

By the time all that's sorted I could be half way through a pint at the pub next door or a bottle of water from the shop. |

I just bought a small jar of Douwe Egberts 'caramel' coffee. Its £3 and is small but will last me a few weeks. I always thought it was a rip off until we discussed the rip offs in Starbucks n Costa. takes 2 mins in the microwave, so easy. Plus I dont have to dress up. (I dont mean an actual dress, just shoes not trainers) |
