As usual with these mag things check the regular issue price, how many issues and also in this case check the cost of all the consumables and if they can be obtained elsewhere (it may cost the earth to run).
Personally, I wouldnt bother, but then I have desire to print anything in 3D. |

Might be cheaper on eBay |

There's a charity I know that does self build for schools.
One printer, prints another and another, it's very interesting and a brilliant thing for kids to be involved in |

They basically give one day tutorials at schools showing them how to assemble them but provide the parts for free being printed from the existing printer. |

It's taken me a weekend to work put assistive cruise control on a car and I didn't have to make it. For that reason I'm out on building a printer, as useful as it may be.
It would also be an old design by the time its built. Costs are set to tumble too and kickstarter has some incredible printer ideas getting funded. as an early investor you get free or cheap printer too. |

So could this 3d printer copy something of value like a huge diamond or gold bullion bar? Or is it just the shape it would replicate, technology scares me, I don't understand it! |

just the shape of it .the ink is plastic .but it can print moving parts to I think

There's some metal 3d printing, koenizegg the car people do it with titiainium.
You can get some random to print off your model, think its 3dhubs do that service, selection of materials 
I got some done and they where ok. They had a cheap fill % so some broke I think

Basically they use a high power laser to fuse small particles of plastic, metal, ceramic or glass powders into a mass that has the desired three dimensional shape. Although most use just dust to create the object but I wouldn't recommend making a gun with that method lol |

I use 3D printing for industrial use. That magazine thing... I wouldn't touch it with a barg pole as they say LOL.
Before considering buy a 3D printer think about what you might print with it. For the most part you'll only be able to print STL files that you might find online.
To create your own models/parts you'll need a 3D CAD system and know how to use it.
Other wise you might also buy a 3D Laser Scanner and then you'll be able to copy small objects/parts.
Basically the 3D printer is only a one part of what you need for it to be of any real use.
That said, having bought one a couple of years ago, it's hard to imagine how we ever managed with out it. But that's making industrial prototypes.
Now don't tell the Boss, but I did make a really nice cock-cage with it  |

Yes you can pretty much 3D print anything nowadays from carbide machine tools to icing a cake, or making 3D objects out of icing sugar to decorate cakes.
The MakerBot type printers use extruded plastic. It literally prints plastic... and if you really want to know, typically the printer has an application that slices the model in the Z axis. It's like taking a solid object and putting it in a bacon slicer. The printer app, slices the object in software into slices lets say 0.1 millimeters thick.
Think of it like a book, where X and Y axis are the width and depth of the object(page) and the pages are the height of the object.
The printer now prints page one, drawing in plastic 0.1mm thick at a time, and then page two over the top of the other, and so on. So if your object is say 50mm/2inches high, it will draw it layer by layer 500 times.
So it takes time too, printing something like the case of an Iphone would probably take 2 or 3 hours.
But don't let me put you off Just be aware of what is really involved, it'll cost more than the price of the printer. And the price of the plastic isn't cheap, unless you buy cheap crap that will keep blocking the extruder nozzle. |
