Which painkillers are you taking?

Bear in mind that some are irritants to the stomach and may not be a good idea.

Have you spoken to your GP about the pain...maybe they could suggest something

Btw, I'd ring the NHS advice number rather than trusting advice from here.

It might be that it's serious enough to need to go and get treatment. You need someone qualified to make that call, not R. Andom on a contacts site.

Ibuprofen will irritate your stomach and may cause it to bleed, especially if your stomach is empty when you take it.

What may help others may not necessarily help you and could make it worse for you. Maybe give the NHS line a call. Hope you feel better soon.

If it is a gastro-enteritis then you should be fasting for 24 hrs before eating dry toast and broth for another 24.....and probably on balanced rehydration fluids like Dioralyte. A medic should have explained all this - sounds like you need better advice!! I would ring the helpline.

Hopefully posting a link to the NHS site is ok:

http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Painkillers-ibuprofen/Pages/Side-effects.aspx

Common side effects of ibuprofen include:

nausea (feeling sick)

vomiting (being sick)

diarrhoea (passing loose, watery stools)

indigestion (dyspepsia)

tummy (abdominal) pain

Less common side effects include:

headache

dizziness

fluid retention (bloating)

raised blood pressure

gastritis (inflammation of the stomach)a stomach ulcer

allergic reactions – such as a rash

worsening of asthma symptoms by causing bronchospasm (narrowing of the airways)

kidney failure

Less common side effects can also include black stools and blood in your vomit. These side effects can indicate that there is bleeding in your stomach.

I'd avoid ibuprofen and aspirin.

Cocodamol should be ok.

Ditto on ringing the helpline.

I'm not sure what sort of doctor thinks ibuprofen is a good treatment for abdominal pain and stomach problems, especially when that person is likely to be eating little or nothing!

O o O oo

I am obviously no Doctor, but with this complaint I don't know anyone who would get told to take painkillers....I thought it was just drink lots and ride it out....which is all you will probably feel like doing anyway.

I am not a fan of Imodium or the likes though as are you not just keeping the bug inside rather than letting it out?

Frisky mare gave some good advice.

I'd add live yogurt as well if you can tolerate it as it will help to rebalanced your gut with good bacteria. Longley farm ones are good as are yeo valley and Rachels organic - opt for ones have few additives, just milk, fruit and sugar.

or the probiotic drinks are good sip them or eat the yoghurt in small spoonfuls at a time. You won't want to overload your tummy with too much to quick or it'll just react.

Be careful with the strength of the cocodamol as the higher strength ones can burn the lining of your stomach if it's got no food inside. Painkillers can be nasty lil buggers for something that's suposed to help you.

Hope you feel better soon x

Don't take Imodium you need to pass the infection however unpleasant and painful it is & never take ibuprofen on an empty stomach, so bad for you!

If nothing is coming out up your water intake.

Call the NHS helpline if you're not feeling better by tomorrow for some advice x

Don't forget the bathroom light switch & door handle too, germ paradise!

Also once you've got rid of the infection hot wash for hand towels & change your toothbrush.

Not wishing (for once!) to start a row with anyone but it's no longer part of the recommended treatment to fast during bouts of gastroenteritis, (not even at the beginning).

Advice is that if you feel like eating, try to maintain a healthy diet and eat small, light meals.

8/500mg are the otc strength, 30/500mg are prescription only so yeah pretty damn strong. It doesn't take long to build up a tolerance to them (and a dependency)

Fair enough, but sometimes people do not understand what constitutes 'light' - which in the case of GI problems means low fat non-dairy foods, ie toast but not butter, fish but not eggs etc.

Mind you last time I had one of those bugs even a cup of ginger tea had me projectile vomiting within minutes, so I think I'd probably still fast to start with myself!

I always take kaolin and morphine. you can buy it over the counter at chemists. tastes awful but works wonders.

Also get some arrowroot biscuits, they help with the bottom end.

Wish you a speedy recovery
