I've been waiting for Blair's book to come out and see what he says about what really went on in the corridors of power. Amazon already have it at half price, and I ordered it this morning. Should be good reading matter for the throne room, made of strong stuff and thoroughly absorbing.

Suppose the only good thing about that book is the profits will be going to the british legion

On the contrary, I'm really looking forward to reading it. As much as I dislike Labour I've always had a grudging respect for Blair, I did vote the guy in at one time lol .. He's a charismatic guy no matter what his politics are and, as you say, the proceeds are going to the British Legion so I don't mind parting with my £12.50 for it.

We do - at the moment. I do not envisage Cameron and Clegg sharing power for the next 15 years. Who knows what will happen at the next election even if they do reform the way we vote to make it more reflective of how people vote.

I think political parties become complacent if they're in power for too long. It happened with the Tories under Thatcher/Major, and then again under Blair/Brown, so 15 years of Cameron may prove too much for us - and him. His book will be a riveting read also though.

I see Phoney Tony has stuck the knife into Brown already.

Will he be giving us a rundown of exactly how and why we got stuck into hugely expensive wars without justification?

Maybe some contrition for the lives wasted would be nice aswell.

And if he could tell us why the country is bust while he is there that would be good.

What makes me laugh is this?

"Political correspondent for the Bloomberg news agency Robert Hutton got hold of the book. He tells the Today programme what suprised him most:

"The big thing that jumped out at me is that right at the end of the book Blair effectively endorses David Cameron's economic programme. He says the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats are getting it right and the Labour party is getting it wrong... He says the New Labour response to it would be to cut the deficit by cutting spending by driving through reforms in public services, as the government says it is doing and by raising VAT. So he doesn't endorse a Labour leadership candidate but he does endorse the government."

SO why the fuck did he spend 13 years getting us into this mess?

It should be called:

Tony Blair - "The Cunt"

Every time I see his Death's Head rictus grin (only surpassed by Skeletor, his Mrs, with her flip-top head), I feel a little sick. If ever there was a real personification of the Antichrist, it's right there, Evangelical Tony, cuprinol tanned, in his flash suits, swanning about the Middle East, lining his pockets.

I wouldn't buy that book, I don't need to PAY to read how he lied and fucked us over, there's going to be no wise words in there, to be quoted down through the ages. Buying this shite just encourages tossers like him to say one thing, do another, then release "memoirs" when out of office and have the gall to demand money for it. How about telling the whole story when in power, when it matters?

Fuck him, and the horse he rode in on.

Ahem, not that I feel strongly about him, like.....

A few pence here and there on bank shares. Wow.

Recent reports of 4 years of neagtive equity.

Millions now unemployed and quite like to remmain so.

Not just pension funds but the whole pension system fucked up?

A generation of "youngsters" with degrees of limited use, upto their eyeballs in stident debt, many without realistic hope of getting that wonderful career that "education, education, education" brings or having their first home.

It's gonna take some rise in bank shares to wipe that lot out.

Occasionally you get to read a post that really sums a situation up. And this is one.

Seeing Phoney Tony with those thin pursed lips and forced smile really makes me feel queasy.

Thanks to The Wolf. And I definitely wont be handing over any brass buying his book.

Siren & I were discussing students and youngsters in general only this morning and if you consider that:

a) students are leaving uni up to £30k in debt,

b) many cannot gain employment if their chosen field,

c) cannot afford a mortgage until they are 37!

d) of those youngsters who do strive hard at school to go to uni, a 1/3 of them can't get in because there aren't enough places available.

.. it's not hard to see how many of the younger generation are adopting a 'fuck it, I'll just rack up a dozen credit cards and declare myself bankrupt to get out of it' attitude.

It is beginning to feel like society and government are sacrificing the young for the sake of those about to draw their pensions in a short term attempt to appease those most likely to vote for them in 5 years time. I pity the government when those students being shafted now get a collective conscience and vent their anger at the ballot box.

I am a Tory and I agree with the government's policies in principal but I am dismayed at how the young are being totally fucked over at the moment.

Faced with the choice, if I was approaching 16 today I'd head straight out to work after finishing high school, as going to University holds no guarantees these days.

I hardly think how ever many billion in profit it is now can be called a few pence. I think it was 9 billion before the recent share price rises.

The rest of what you say... well that's nothing new is it. We hear all that stuff every year.

The pension system is affected by global events, not just our UK debt.

Anyway... my point was not that the bank share price rise was going to be the sole saviour.... just that people whinge about shit and forget to look at the positives. But then why would this new lot want to shout about something good the other lot set up. It's all about making the most of the scape goat. Doing nothing but cutting back to the bone on spending is not the only way (never mind the best way) to get out of this pit... however it is the way they have chosen to do it, as they can blame the last lot for most of what they choose to do now.

Many leave uni with much lower loans.... which they do not have start repaying until they reach a certain level of income.

Many choose 'soft' degrees which are piss easy but have little opportunity at the end.

Some go out and gain work experience instead of drinking their time away.

More uni places than ever are out there.... some don't run because there isn't enough take-up. As you say there are not enough jobs for some graduates in their chosen field so why make even more places for that degree?

Who do you mean? How far back are you going? Brown/ Blair/ Bush? Major? Thatcher and the other Bush? Beyond that?

Some will have been deceitful - possibly for good reasons. Diplomacy for example or national security. Some may have been corrupt - Nixon certainly was.

Others? Plenty of allegations but precious little admissible evidence.

I suspect it all comes down to whether you like/ support the leader in question.

I have the pleasant task of running summer placement programmes for students, along with pre-reg programmes for those degrees which require a 4th year doing the job before they fully graduate (these are proper professionals) …. However I also have the misfortune of looking after the intake of fecking various business type graduates.

Out of one group of 10, 7 turned up late for their first day. One got locked into a neighbouring building, one said they didn’t know where they were going and got lost (turning up 2 hours late), one misread the venue address (even though we sent a map) and went to a different city! 3 didn’t have any reason at all for being half an hour late… though I am guessing the Starbucks cups had something to do with it. Oh and the last one didn’t realise there would be traffic in the morning.

All of them wanted to know how to claim back fuel/parking//taxi/bus fare for travelling to their permanent place of work!

Half didn’t realise they might need a pen!

Four came back late from lunch… it wasn’t their fault there was a queue … yet still chose to eat in and not get a take-out allowing them to get back on time.

A bunch of useless wankers!

I said up to £30k as a Law degree, for example, will cost that much by the time they're finished, but in the main most students will be somewhere between £10k-£15k in debt by the time they get through their finals.

The figures regarding availability were widely publicised only two weeks ago and 180,000 students didn't get a place at all. And maybe they knew the true value of soft degrees and decided it wasn't worth 4 years of study and went straight to market instead.

Our kids are brainwashed into believing that a University education is the best start in life they can get yet they are now finding that they have been lied to as the promised lucrative career ladder has got the first five rungs missing.

You obviously don't understand.

They have a DEGREE.

Having a degree is GOOD.

It's DESIRABLE from an employers point of view.

The fact that their degree is of no use to anyone, and is in a subject they have no prticular interest in anyway SHOULD NOT MATTER.

There SHOULD be JOBS for them. Paying 30K minimum!

Doing what? Fuck knows - they don't.

When i left skool early 80's there were 3 million unmeployed and you just fucking got on with it. The next generation all having degrees is a direct result of their parents seeing traditional industries and jobs disappear in the 80's and thinking, i don't want that to happen to my kid.

At no point did anyone think about what all these graduates might actually DO once they left Uni.

I hate to be Sir Tufton Bufton writing to the Telegraph, but fuck 'em.

The smart ones will make it in life by adapting, the twats wh think the worldowes them a living won't.

More uni places than ever are out there.... some don't run because there isn't enough take-up. As you say there are not enough jobs for some graduates in their chosen field so why make even more places for that degree?

A degree doesn't instantly make someone employable!

Our kids are brainwashed into believing that a University education is the best start in life they can get yet they are now finding that they have been lied to as the promised lucrative career ladder has got the first five rungs missing."

Then best they stop whining and get climbing.

"Tony Blair- The Voyage.

Has he gone yet? Can I come out now? "

The book's called 'The Journey'.

I got it mixed up with the sequel: 'Tony Blair 2 - The Voyage Home' - a rip-roaring rollercoaster of a novel set in 1/16 of an acre of a shithole up in Sedgefield, where former Prime Minister Baron Blair faces his arch enemy Professor Brown as he tries to regain power through a series of dodgy manoeverings in Brussels and backstabbing on the after dinner circuit. There was a herione in the sequel but the publishers decreed that she was so fucking ugly that it made the book indigestable - or rather it would give it's readers indigestion. So Cherie has been packed off to Afghanistan to clear IEDs where she meets an Afghan warlord who kidnaps her, but when Ali Ali Akbar removes her body armour and anti-explosive helmet and sees her face he pays Tony to take her back.

i doubt if tony the phoney knows how to tell the truth as he been telling lies and getting away with it for so long now!.

all the lie telling has lead to a very lucrative career indeed for blair as he travels the world as middle east peace envoy and also gives after dinner speeches in the usa he is earning so much money now that he leaves our top earning soccer players way behind in the money stakes!,all this while the troops he sent to iraq & afghanistan to fight for his mate george bush & the yankee dollar continue to come home either in body bags or limbless and for what?,blair gets richer and richer yet the troops have to fight tooth & nail for compensation and when on leave cannot get served in corner shops or supermarkets because the uniform of the troops offends the shopkeeper!,(asian immigrants of course!).

thank you mr blair for the legacy you have this country.

It is a bit of a kick in the teeth when you look at it like that. As for the soldiers being refused service in shops etc... the sooner that becomes a crime the better. I'm surprised none of these shopkeepers have had their shop windows put through yet.

"Siren & I were discussing students and youngsters in general only this morning and if you consider that:

a) students are leaving uni up to £30k in debt,

b) many cannot gain employment if their chosen field,

c) cannot afford a mortgage until they are 37!

d) of those youngsters who do strive hard at school to go to uni, a 1/3 of them can't get in because there aren't enough places available.

Many leave uni with much lower loans.... which they do not have start repaying until they reach a certain level of income.

Many choose 'soft' degrees which are piss easy but have little opportunity at the end.

Some go out and gain work experience instead of drinking their time away.

I agree with what you`ve said Polo! Equally, those who`ve worked bloody hard at getting good results in worthwhile subjects, have been shafted by the companies that should be employing them by using the cheaper option of bringing in ready qualified staff from overseas and not spending money on training up home grown talent.

It does make me laugh when people throw insults at Cherie Blair, infinitely more intelligent than the majority on here, with a better education and better career than most as well.

First Class Honours degree in Law, top of her year in Bar exams, went on to teach law before becoming a barrister in 1976.

A QC, with earnings that outshine most, a very succesful Law career and wealthy in her own right.

The old 'Green eyed monster' is alive and kicking in here at times.....

Hague has gone to great lengths to dispel the rumour about him being homosexual. He and his wife have been trying for a baby for years and have suffered several miscarriages and between them theyt have always said, "If only they knew the truth."

This rumour-mongering has forced him to put what is an intensely personal issue for him and his wife right out in the public eye, and it has cost a gifted young man his job too, as the other innocent victim in all of this felt he couldn't continue with such aspersions on his character being hoiked around the tabloids.

Freedom of speech by the media should be guarded closely as abusing it could lead to it being removed altogether.

In light of the expenses scandal AND all the main parties campagining the election on cutbacks across the board I guess Hague thought he was leading by example and saving taxpayers money. Can't do right for doing wrong to some it appears. So now he can't be faulted for adopting the policy of 'if he is going to be hung, he might as well be guilty' with regards to expenses and we'll have to foot the bill for seperate rooms for him and his staff.

Or, just maybe, in the middle of a fierce election he felt he needed his advisor with him at all times to discuss anything that pops up, that requires their immediate attention.

(there ya go, left it wide open for ya hehehe)

The 'other man' in the allegation was not registered with Parliament as an official paid constituancy aide until the rumours started, Cabinet members are not permitted more than Two paid aides yet for some reason Hague comes up with this 'He is just a personal aide and advisor' tale to cover the fact he already had Two long term paid aides in position since 2007.

Funnily enough his other Two official aides have never shared a room with Hague, but then again they are probably not attractive young men.

Maybe as Wishy said he is just sharing a bedroom with this guy to save the country some money in these times of austerity within government....

I couldn't give a stuff about his sexuality, what is important is the fact that Hague employed this 'Special Advisor to The Foreign Office' at taxpayers (our) expense.

Even though at the age of Twenty Five Christopher Myers has no proven record of having worked in International matters, has had no history of working with Central Government before he became Hagues 'friend', nor has he any proven experience in foreign business or trade.

Yet he qualifies as a 'Special Advisor' to the Foreign Office with a £40,000 wage to go with the position?.

The smokescreen that Hague has attempted to throw over this matter with his statement about his wifes 'multiple miscarriages' is frankly amateur and ridiculous.

The question still stands over why Hague chose a constituency 'friend', to fill the position of an expert in foreign matters.....at our expense.

Wishy will remain a Tory Boy until Cameron brings in a few things that directly affect him and his....then he will once again be looking for someone else to vote for.

I don't think voting Conservative for the first time in 17 years makes anyone a true Tory, just a fair weather voter in my book.

And Immigration wasn't invented by New Labour Wishy, there were millions of immigrants that entered the UK from the early sixties until 1997, they have become part of what makes up this country.

Is it a moral crime to change the way one votes? I thought that was the fundamental mainstay of democracy - the freedom to choose.

I can't be the only one who does it as the fact that governments change demonstrates that enough fair weather voters exist. It is even more ludicrous to vote for a party on the simple basis that you have always voted for them, or grandad voted for them so I will. What sort of conscientious decision is that!

Ok, so they never actually do everything they say will before they get elected, but I believe it's more about getting rid of a party that has clearly lost it's way than electing a new party that hasn't found theirs yet.

I'm positive that one day the Tories won't seem so attractive to me any longer, but if that happens in 10-15 years time I'll be approaching retirement age and I'll want the best deal for me then as opposed to now - when I'm still working and have another 15-20 of doing so.

Circumstances change as time passes and one's political leanings should reflect that. What use is free university places to a man of 60, when he'd far more appreciate an increase in his pension or a favourable tax break on it.

Lets face it, politicians do lie....doesn't matter what political party they are representing, the general population hear very little of what really goes on in the cabinet, particularly foreign policy.

There is a saying...."Truth, you want the truth?.....you couldn't handle the truth"!, that just about sums politics up, we the people couldn't handle the truth of half of what goes on in much of politics.

Yes we probably did go to war with Iraq over oil, but then again we probably want to hang onto the Falklands for much the same reason truth be told....

To think we should be hearing the truth in all foreign policy decisions is a little nieve to say the least, the British public would find most of it unpalletable (spelling?).

I don't think voting Conservative for the first time in 17 years makes anyone a true Tory, just a fair weather voter in my book.

Did we know about that oil in 1982? How come it's taken so long to start fetching it up?

Earlier in the thread Wishy you said..."I am a Tory", my post is in response to that because voting Tory once in 17 years doesn't make you a Tory...it makes you a floating voter, not that there is anything wrong in that... but I take you saying you are a Tory in the same way that most Manchester United supporters are glory hunters too....

They know oil was under the south pole but costs at that time and oil value made it too expensive to extract. Even now its low profit but if oil prices go up then brass will be made.

They have been test drilling for oil in the Falklands waters for over Twenty years, just last year they announced that they had located what they thought could be a possible major oil source.

Funnily enough it was around the time the Argentinians started off about owning the 'Malvinas' again, funny that.

It was well after the Falklands war when drilling started. Surveys were done a long time ago but the first actual drilling for oil to extract only started in feb this year.

My brother in Law was in the Falklands in 1996 (armed forces) and they were pilot drilling then (Shell).

When he left the forces he went on to work directly for Shell in places like the Niger Delta.

Amerada Hess were there before Shell in the early 90's pilot drilling.

I am a Tory because I voted for them in the election and remain convinced their policies are the best for me and my family at this time. I've been a Liberal Party member in the past and I voted Blair in in 1997 because the Tories were in as much disarray then as Labour are now.

But, I am beginning to see that my fundamental political ideals are more closely aligned with the Conservative Party than any other. The Liberal Party have a lot of policies that I agree with but a few I wholeheartedly disagree with. Conversely, Labour have a few policies I like but many many more I don't.

As for football, I am a Manchester United supporter because my older brother threatened to kick my head in if I supported his team when we were 5 and 6 years old. Spurs are shit anyway.

I'm thinking about my kids and what I want for them. Am seriously considering encouraging my kids to learn a trade. At least they have that to fall back on and lets face it by the time they are allowed to retire, probably nearer 80 they will probably have changed their careers a few times.

They were drilling for gas in 96 not oil as its a different process. They are still not sure if they will be able to extract and ship any oil found if they do. Added to that the new softy regs that are about to be made mandatory in drilling may put the southern fields below the islands out the viable extraction bracket.

I disagree. msnwty and I have reached an understanding about each other and we take the piss out of each other's politics but keep it light hearted. I'm sure she read the statement with the humour I intended for her to read into it.

If I wanted to be racist I'd have said that all foreigners should be drowned upon arrival into the UK but I don't believe that so I wouldn't say it. To implicate racism in a harmless statement a bit OTT when there was absolutely no malice behind the statement. If I was a member of the BNP and used those words I'd say you have grounds to call me a racist, and yes, I know not all racists are members of the BNP, but I'd wage that all BNP members are racist.

I didn't intend this thread about Blair's book to degrade into what racism is as that's not what his book is about. I apologise for my remark, (I wont repeat it here or this post will have to be deleted also), and although it was not intended to be anything remotely racist I appraciate that it could have been construed as such. I over stepped the mark on this occasion and apologise unreservedly for it.

That places most of the political parties in the 'weathercock' description then as they've all deviated from their traditional stances (Labour/Left, Liberal/Middle, Tory/Right)

Labour have moved to centre left and the Tories have moved into centre right. The Liberals are the true weathcocks and float whichever way they can gain power. Let's not forget that if Brown had offered Clegg a better deal than Cameron did then we'd have a very different political landscape today.

"The 'other man' in the allegation was not registered with Parliament as an official paid constituancy aide until the rumours started, Cabinet members are not permitted more than Two paid aides yet for some reason Hague comes up with this 'He is just a personal aide and advisor' tale to cover the fact he already had Two long term paid aides in position since 2007.

Funnily enough his other Two official aides have never shared a room with Hague, but then again they are probably not attractive young men.

Maybe as Wishy said he is just sharing a bedroom with this guy to save the country some money in these times of austerity within government.... "

"Siren & I were discussing students and youngsters in general only this morning and if you consider that:

a) students are leaving uni up to £30k in debt,

b) many cannot gain employment if their chosen field,

c) cannot afford a mortgage until they are 37!

d) of those youngsters who do strive hard at school to go to uni, a 1/3 of them can't get in because there aren't enough places available.

.. it's not hard to see how many of the younger generation are adopting a 'fuck it, I'll just rack up a dozen credit cards and declare myself bankrupt to get out of it' attitude.

Faced with the choice, if I was approaching 16 today I'd head straight out to work after finishing high school, as going to University holds no guarantees these days."

i would go straight out to work at 16 also

and try get one of those jobs where you sit and play cards all day , or are on call indefinately lol

serriously ......... what is to stop these graduates emigrating to australia saudi wherever , and saying goodbye to the 30k debt they have racked up ?

cos thats what i would consider doing !

Nothing Gordon could have offered Clegg could have overcome the fundamental problem of arithmetic. There were those around Brown who were so desperate to hang onto power at any cost that they would have done just about anything.

Gordon finally got so fed up with their antics he pissed off to the palace and called the wooing off.

When Clegg climbed into bed with Cameron he could scarcely have imagine the monumental arse-fucking he was about to receive. Still, it's nothing compared to what he can expect at his party conference.

The difference between the Tories and Labour was that Brown would never have got the agreement past rank and file Labour Party members, there was no appetite for a coalition agreement within the Labour family.

Brown never was the choice of the membership in the first place and it was far better to let go of power and rid the party of a lame duck leader.

Brown went to the palace the moment he knew his time was up, if he was pissed off it was only because he knew he was out. He'd have done the deal if he could have, he said as much when he invited Clegg into talks - shit scared that Cameron would beat him to making a deal with the Libs.

And yes, you're right, Clegg is in for a real rough ride at the party conference but a small part of me is wondering if the party whips will be out in full force to head off ANY dissention in the rank and file membership.

The Liberal party whips don't have much control over the rank and file membership. Grass roots Fib Dems are a notoriously inpedendent minded bunch and don't put up with that sorta shit.

Fib Dem members at Westminster, with one or two notable exceptions (like Kennedy the bevvy merchant and Simon Hughes) will continue to sell their first born child for a ministerial Jag.

labour under tory blair was to appeal to middle britain and them that were convinced they were middle class because auntie maggie let them buy their council houses!

labour is so far removed from its socialist roots its better described as tory in primark clothing!

as for the lib dems well i can say my faith in them is shattered completely, they seem to be sittin dithering and never seem to say anythin or object to anything!

anyway still on the subject of tony blairs book has anyone actually read the full thing yet and is it any good or just more stroking of his over inflated ego and startling revelations that he liked a drink! whoop de fuckin doo he drove most of us to drink!!

its sad really when you see the achievements they did make with workers rights and the lifting children out of poverty and winter fuel payments etc all to be forgotten because he led us into a war we will never win xx

The reason we're in so much debt was the need for there to be money in the holes in the wall on the Monday morning the weekend the banks nearly went bust.

Remember the queues outside Northern Rock? Imagine that multiplied by all the clearing banks and most of the building society banks.

A couple of points from above :

Blair lifted more children out of poverty? Not according to official statistics he didn't. Hardly surprisibg when the definition of poverty is directly tied to average earnings ( less than 60% is it?)

And subjecting the whole of the next generation to ridiculous levels of debt ain't gonna help.

Financial liquidity : re Northern Rock

A former solid Building Society turned risky bank on the back of empire building? Become a Bank, borrow wildly. Offer 125% mortgages to sub prime clients. Jesus christ what a recipe for success that was gonna be.

And which government allowed and regulated over all of this? Blair/Brown.

I liked an alternative suggestion for the title of Balir's book. "My, Myself, I" sums up the lot of them. Public servant my arse.
