I can not get my head around the fact that somebody tried to enter my property last nite while my self and my children were sleeping.
I awoke to find that both my locks on the front had been tampered with from the outside. I was crying and shaking this morning to be honest. Phoned the police and just waiting for them now. I have never felt so scared in my life. I am a single independent woman but it times like this that I wished a had a bloody massive protective male to keep us all safe . My housing are putting on two new locks for me but don't think I will get much sleep tonight ![](/icons/s/sad.gif) |

Oh no I would be the exact same!
If you can afford to, I'd consider getting an alarm installed & cctv.
Hope you do manage to get some rest tonight and that the police can help.

Sturdy bolts will defeat any burglar who wants to enter your house while you're asleep. Get some as long as you can and remember they're only as strong as whatever they're fasten to so get them set onto the wall and not just the door frame. Don't forget the back door too. |

I have only one bolt on my front door but none on my back. The back door weights a ton though and is very sturdy do won't budge even when kicked. |

Only one bolt on the front door, I live in a very high crime risk area so bulgarys are the norm but I have never heard of people being robbed while they are actually sleeping |

Quite dreadful experience for you and your children.
I can say that in my experience of these matters it will be opportune criminals who will have noticed that some of your security precautions are disabled. When the Bill turn up ask for a referral to Victim support as they have a good network of help at hand.
If you are in rented accommodation then ensure all the security precautions are fixed and or updated. |

New locks, bolts get the housing to sort out the lighting, cctv and an alarm system. Might be an expensive outlay but well worth it for the peace of mind |

Until you get something sorted. Hand something heavy off the door handles on a piece of string, so if the handle us tried the object drops onto something like an old pan and makes a noise. A simple deterant as burglara dont like noise |

Got a huge and heavy book case in my hall way. When that falls it feels like a earth quake and sounds like thunder. Going to put that in front of the door for a few nights. I am sleeping down stairs while my kids sleep in their rooms, any one trys again this evening I will be ready for them. |

You don't really need an aggressive dog just a bloody noisey one
I have a Labrador who does not have an aggressive bone in his body but he's gobby, every time he hears a noise he's running about barking, jumping up the door, no one would come into my house with that racket on the other side, funny thing is if they did he wouldnt harm them but they don't know that |

no dont sleep down stairs as confronting them could be far worse the one thing we dont want to see is someone hurt for it
if the lights had been sorted out instead of left faulty/broken it may not have happened
if yours are the double glazing type you need a twist lock at side of door jarm one top and bottom i prefer a steel bar across the door
with cctv use the ones with infa red or night vision some are low distance though so a 3-5 metre infa red is the better one
with cctv cross your path if its on the door fit one over the windows area as its just another point of access without cameras
with cctv cameras you dont have to put up a warning notice my cameras had sound with them
as long as you dont point a camera in a persons property or better known as in there bottom window as its there right of privacy |

I remember reading somewhere that thieves prefer houses with security lights. It means they have a better view of the house they are trying to enter and any trip hazards by the door. |

I keep a baseball bat and a waziaski under my bed because I live in a rougher neck of the woods. My house is like Hotel California, you can 'check out' anytime you like, but you can never leave.
Never had to get them out in anger, hope I never do.
Dirty great bolts help too.

Probably some truth in that, but noise wakes me up and even my bedroom door slightly opening wakes me up. Plus you can't see them just looking at my bed, I'll take my chances until I get a dog. Actually then I'd probably end up running downstairs screaming don't hurt my dog. ![](/icons/s/confused.gif) |

You might be surprised. Even very soft dogs can be very territorial and protective.
My ex-bfs family had a lab without an aggressive bone in her body. One night the father left to go out to a meeting, leaving the house empty but for the dog. He got down the drive only to realise he'd forgotten something so rather than back up, he walked back to the house.
As he let himself in, 35kg of black lab flew through the air and landed on him, growling, knocking him flat on the floor. She'd heard him drive off and hadn't heard the car come back so she'd thought it was an intruder.
Apparently you've never seen such a sheepish, apologetic dog. |

Thank you all for your advice, my housing have just been round and gave me new locks plus a chain on the door. Think he felt sorry for me to be honest. Bolts will be added to back door as well as one to my front door. They even booked a job for my security lights to be fixed. On speaking to my neighbours I have found out that two properties have been burgled only last week in my road. Both occupants were in the house at the time. I don't really speak to my neighbours so there was no way of me knowing this to be prepared. My brother will stay with me for a few days until I relax a little ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

Would suggest that you find your local martial arts center and either think about taking it up or see if they have a basic self defense classes.
It one thing keeping them out and I totally agree with all said, it's another if they get in or try to attack you as ur opening the door to go in which has happened to a few people I know.
Also if you go for lessons then most do family discount so might be good as a family thing with the kids.
Me and both my daughters have been doing this for last 6 years, all now Black belts ( me most junior to the 13 & 10 year olds) but now happy I low they have really good chance in protecting themselves if it was ever needed. |

Martial arts would also help with your coordination recovery and balance and you don't have to be fit to do it, you get fit as side benefit ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

Someone drilled through our wooden window frames and got in that way, emphasizing that importance of window locks. It freaked me, so know how you feel, as I had kids around at the time too.
If a friend has a dog, consider it staying over a bit, as it may help you relax. |

I would only go for security chain on the inside of the doors ....you know the sort granny has so she can see who is at the door ,then fit an alarm ....they pop the door but it's not open and the alarm goes off
Cctv isn't worth it ...lights only have limited use ..... |

query what extra lights would you be putting up as normally with housing there right outside your door
if you are putting up cctv cameras the low voltage ones dont show on them that well
as i ended up installing some extra cctv cameras so all house was covered
if you are thinking of cctv use an 8 camera system using 4 is ample but always allows for 4 extra cameras to be installed as well |

Sorry to hear about your experience, I think tougher penalties need to be bought in. Public flogging, the victim being the one to do the flogging, a week in public stocks too.
House burglars are the lowest of the low. |

sorry to hear of your troubles, you have my sympathy, it is never nice when you find yourself a target of night burglars. May I suggest that if you can afford it (time and money) get yourself a dog and teach it to bark whenever anyone comes to the door, they are the best burglar alarm and deterrent going!;-)

we were broken into years ago - with a male in the house- one way to get your head round it is that they were chancers - more n likely just having a go (and failing) - listen to all the things you tell the kids to keep them positive and not scared - then tell yourself the same thing - not easy and huge hugs for you Sx |

Sorry to hear this op, also make sure windows are locked, when my mum ot burgled they got through a tiny window in the downstairs toilet, it had to be a child working with as no adult would possibly have gotten through it. Thankfully they took very little and didn't make a mess, they had only been in the house three weeks, my mum was scared for ages as though where both upstairs sleeping |

Really sorry to read this. I hope your nerves settle soon. I think it took mine a few days before I relaxed again, when some pleab broke into my flat years ago. Unfortunately I was in the flat, and more importantly awake at the time, and my reaction scared the poo out of me.
I tend to be a wee tad ott with regards to security these days.
I hope you get everything secure again, and much more importantly manage to feel safe in your own home again.

"could you set up a neighbourhood watch of some kind, might help with your peace of mind"
Where I live there are only a handful of English speaking family's so there is a bit of a language barrier for that to work. |

"That must have been an awful shock.. Make sure you keep your keys out of sight of the letterbox. In my area we have people putting a pipe through letterbox and viewing the area. Taking keys off the table and stealing cars.
I hope the housing people make it safe for you. ."
My housing have been great, they even rang me today to see how I was ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

join a local shooting club - get a shotgun certificate and keep your gun at home - can be very useful for self-defence when needed - afraid that's what this country is coming to - hope you ok now x |

"I can not get my head around the fact that somebody tried to enter my property last nite while my self and my children were sleeping.
My housing are putting on two new locks for me but don't think I will get much sleep tonight "

She has children in the house. A two year old in the US died when his parents left him sat in the front of their car whilst they loaded it and he found the gun in the glove box.
To get a licence for a gun in the UK you need to undertake to keep it secured in a locked gunsafe when at home and not being used for the purpose you got it (ie target shooting or hunting). |

You can only claim self defence if it upstairs where your family is sleeping, otherwise it is classed as assault. |

We have a dog and she barks when someone walks on the other side of the road!
I really struggle with looking after a dog a lot of the time on top of the kids and everything else, but I'd never be without one, as if ever my husband stays out late, I feel completely safe knowing she is there. |
