Doctors have performed the first organ transplants from a newborn in the UK.
In a procedure described as a milestone in neonatal care, a six-day-old baby girl's kidneys and liver cells were given to two separate recipients after her heart stopped beating.
Experts argue there is potential for more life-saving donations, but say current UK guidelines are prohibitive.
An official review is expected by the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health this year.
'Extraordinary generosity. the baby girl who was born in extremely poor health.
Tests suggest she had been starved of oxygen before birth and despite resuscitation had profound brain damage.
Doctors at Imperial College NHS Trust in London say in an act of "extraordinary generosity" her parents agreed that her organs could be donated once her heart stopped beating.
Her kidneys were given to a patient with renal failure.
And in a separate operation her liver cells were transfused to someone with a failing liver.
I think this family are inspiring to have given such a gift at such a sad time.
My family know I'm happy to donate everything, apart from my eyes - I don't know why , I know they're no use to me once I'm dead. Are you happy to donate anything after your death ? |

Yeah I'm registered to donate everything, I know a few who don't like the idea of donating their eyes but to me I'm already dead so it makes no difference to me |

When I was a teenager and first became a donor I was the same about my eyes,I changed my mind though
I'll be dead my body an unusable shell and that includes my eyes/corneas
If I'm going on to other places I'll be able to see anyway so why not give someone who is still alive the gift of sight too so they can appreciate how wonderful it is |

Absolutely YES!
MY eldest son has been on the kidney transplant list since he was 20 (he's 26 now) after his first kidney transplant rejected.
When he had his first transplant (aged 17) after many many years of illness and dialysis we were so grateful and humbled to think that a family had given us such a precious gift. For 2 and a bit years my son (once over surgery) lived a 'normal' life, resumed his studies, got some GCSE's and even a part time job and whilst we were devastated that his kidney rejected we will always be grateful.
Grateful isn't actually the right word - it's difficult to explain.
It's a no brainer for me and even if we weren't living this reality now I can't think of a single reason why you wouldn't donate organs?

I signed up to the donar register several yrs ago when I seen first hand what the results of someone being on the register can have for others , to think one person gave 6 others the chance of a life after his death is truly humbleing, in a strange way it also helped me come to terms with my loss knowing that I did what he wanted at the end. |

Started carrying a card when I was 16. Lost it now, so I should get another. My family know my views on the subject though. If anything happened to my kids I would give permission as well.
I would actually like my entire cadaver to then be used for medical training etc. I want no remains left for a funeral. If people want to gather in a pub for a wake, then fine. I will stand the cost of a buffet, but I'm fucked if my family are going to pay for a funeral. |

Organ donation is one of the most altruistic things that a person can do, and I take a great deal of pleasure in the fact that so many of us are willing to do it, so yes, I agree, it is a jolly thread. |

Yes they can have anything they want when I'm done.
I've read you can be made into fertilizer too, and I want that done when I'm dead. Then maybe become a bonsai tree I was thinking, or maybe spread in one of my favourite green places of the world. |

I have been on the register for as long as I can remember.
I am so full of admiration to parents who can give their consent for their childs organs to be used. I will be honest and say, I'm not sure I could
Our youngest daughter has a genetic condition (not hereditary) and *touch wood* should the worst ever happen to her, we would be faced with the hardest decision ever - whether to donate her body for research into her condition.
The logical part says yes as it could help with treatments & a cure that could set all other girls with her condition free but my parent heart says it couldn't bare it

I feel selfish saying this but I'll admit that I'm not sure I could do it either...
Take whatever you want from me but our son went through the same thing in the O.P and, had they not managed to resuscitate him, I'm not sure if I could see through the grief to allow it, even knowing it could save others, but I suppose that would in some cases be denial to accept that they weren't going to wake up/miraculously recover.
I could give permission for Vincent but not sure if I could've for my Baby.
And for that, I have the upmost respect for those parents. It's a heartbreaking decision.

Carry my card with me.
Bu like some others on here, my body is doing it's best to not be able to help others directly.
If my organs can't be donated, I want my body to be used by those who can help work out how to improve and better the lives of others less fortunate than myself.
I'd back an opt-out system, as there's very few willing to donate. |

I'm on the organ donor list too, but I don't understand why some have said "everything but my eyes". They're not "windows to the soul", they're just lumps of tissue and cartilage that are no good to you when you're dead. |

Yes I have donated blood since Uni days. My father had many pints of blood whilst he was terminally ill, so it feels like i'm giving something back for the extra time it gave us with him.

Definite yes from me. My younger brother died in sept 2012. As he had made no wish ( he was too young to die ) as a family we agreed to organ donation. A few months after his death we received a letter from the hopsital to say that 4 of his organs had been successfully transplanted and the recipients were all making good progress.
I would encourage everyone to do the same. We never know what the next day brings. It maybe us wanted someone's else organs.
My brothers spirit lives on.

I lost my son when he was 20 months old and donated his organs, they have a desperate shortage of organs for children under 5 simply because most parents who loose kids that age don't want their bodies cutting up, for me a child of 20 months passing away seemed such a waste of life but by helping other children live it made it seem less of a waste
Ask yourself this, if your child was I'll and needed a transplant would you take an organ from a dead child to save your child's life? If the answers yes then you should do the same in return |

I'm fairly sure they wait until you're dead before taking any organ, including eyes - just out of interest, if they took everything else, would you have your eyeballs cremated or buried in a small coffin? |

Seeing how poorly a fellow fab member is and knowing how much it helps people made us want to join

I'd donate anything. And hopefully in the darkest of times could do what was done in the OP.
As for the eyes I know a guy who had both eyes done with a transplanted cornea. He was nearly blind before. Now he works on a train doing the refreshments trolley and whenever I see him he's such a happy bloke |

I already signed myself up to be a registered organ donor when I was 16/18? Can't quite remember but it was as soon as I was old enough...
If the worst should happen I would donate any of my boys organs if it could save someone else's life, there should be a silver lining to any cloud imo, but hubby doesn't like the idea of messing with the human body (an ideal from his ghost and soul believing mother) and refuses to be a donor himself or allow the boys :-/ |

I'm down to donate everything.
I donated blood in an unusual circumstance and got a letter later thanking me and telling me that the recipient made a full recovery.
Knowing the differ a small act like that made to someone else I'm definitely happy to give up whatever left of me when I die, especially my eyes, if I could help two people see then that would be amazing.
I definitely think it should be an opt out system not an opt in. |

I agree that for internal organs it should be an opt out service!!
Perhaps things like eyes that ultimately affect how you appear at your wake should be excluded, but heart/kidneys/liver etc
I really wanted to do bone marrow donations, but you cant if you have a bmi above 35 apparently, and I couldn't get the time off work for the recovery :-/ |

Alot of people see them as windows to the soul. Also the idea of have your eyes removed spooks alot of people.
When harvesting the organs are removed in order of life they have outside the body. So hear, lungs, liver, spleen, then kidneys and last is bone and eyes as the corneas have no blood supply and breath for themselves..
As something is removed so something is put in its place so you don't look like an empty sack.
(sorry couldn't think of a better analogy). |

I'm supprized this being a swinging site no one has brought it up yet haha
But many moons ago was in a club in the fine city of Edinburgh and talking to a couple in s club. This was back before the internet was what is...(haha not old...started young haha) anyway the club had a magazine and the guy showed me it.
I flicked through and will never forget the advert for a card...
On.one side it said "necrocard" and logo and on the other it was like giving people permission to experiment sexually on your body when your dead haha
Found it so funny....but weird as well. It ain't something I'd be up for...but guess what's it matter....your dead....however can't see it being legal? So why the card? A joke...a thought so at time but just googled it and see its real |
