Sometimes I get these odd little 'brain farts', where my mind starts asking itself all sorts of weird and wonderful questions.
For example, here's one for you.
Where does the word 'Hospitality' originate from given that it rarely has anything in common with the 'large building with patients'
Anyone else similarly afflicted? |

Hospital and Hospitality are different words, just because they are similar doesn't mean they are related. |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
It's from the Latin to host, hospes. However, hostis means stranger and/or enemy.
We get hospital from this route through hostel or shelter, when hospital meant a shelter for strangers/guests.

I agree on the cake and eating it. Looking at cake is only rewarding for a very short time. Stale cake is not worth anything.
The one I struggle with is "spendthrift". I spend and am not thrifty - the two words are opposed. |

No, I completely understand that. I'm not having a thick moment. Just thinking that both words will have had their origins and it's remarkable that two similar words can be completely unrelated

Ta da! Thank you for that. It all makes perfect sense now.

Hospitable Mode = Person
Hospitality = What they share.
This could be totally wrong but still...
The one that gets me is :
"He's a complete stranger"
Ok...lets just pause right there because how many variations of a Stranger is there?..see, I either know somebody or I don't. |

Not exactly the same.
But as I continue in the direction of becoming a grumpy old man.
I wander around most of the day angry at anyone who dares do something I don't like.
I have a constant internal monologue going on.
Look at this twat, can't wait a second bet he did it just to piss me off.
Or
This bastard broke this kitchen on purpose just to piss me off.
Or
Look at her all dressed up just to go to work
Bet she done it just to piss me off.
And I bet non of you fuckers reply to this, yep just to piss me off.
Angry him |
