THIS is the problem with RM...

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

So,

today I had to send a parcel off.

RoyalMail's price: £8.60 (second class)

Herme's Price: £2.34 (arrives the same time) and they have a drop off point 200 yards away.

I suggest this is why Royal Mail will most likely go bust.

It's fucking basic economics and pretty "no-brainer"...

Somewhere in North Norfolk

Yup.

And their solution, as people desert them for other carriers and income drops, is to raise prices!

Doh!

I've not had great experiences with Hermes but they've been no worse than Royal Mail, certainly!

We always use Hermes because RM is way over priced and use tnt for next day or items over 16 kg

"We always use Hermes because RM is way over priced and use tnt for next day or items over 16 kg"

I created an account on Parcel2go website.

It gives you a choice of carrier and full price breakdown.

Considering I have my own Internet business it's one of those websites where I'm thinking "yeah, so why didn't I think of this"...

It's basically a comparison site that gives you the best prices, I dig it.

I prefer Royal Mail, as they charge the same, regardless of whether it is an easy one or a drop in the back of beyond.

Royal Mail are in a no-win situation. Parcel delivery has always been used to subsidise the letter service. Their competitors don't have to subsidise anything, so they undercut RM on parcels.

The government restrict the Royal Mail ability to compete because of the 'Universal Service ' which by law enforces them to deliver to every household 6 days a week whether financially viable to do so or not. The money to pay for that has to come from somewhere.

Isn't the difference though that with Royal Mail someone will actually try to deliver it he package, whereas with Hermes the best you can hope for is that they will slow the van down a little as they throw it into your garden from the window?

I reckon there are too many delivery services competing for business, driving prices down and sending the weakest to the wall.

From my favourite seat in my favourite cafe I can watch half a dozen different courier firms delivering to the same building in less than an hour.

Royal mail have been brilliant for my business, and their prices on small heavy stuff went right down last year. UK mail are good too - bloody Hermes collected a package that was supposed to be for UK mail and have been utterly useless in getting it sorted.

Exactly right......royal mail have a legal obligation to provide a service to all addresses, at the same cost. The other parcel carriers can cherry pick where they want to deliver to and charge different prices. Also, prices for letters are regulated by government too, royal mail can't just charge what they want to charge.

Until all carriers have the same restrictions then the ability to compete on a level playing field is not there.

The system is very complicated but the other couriers are allowed to cherry pick the business where the RM are obligated to do all.

Brighton - even Hove!

I prefer Hermes, they dress so elegantly. The cut is better, the style is spot on and the quality of the cloth and manufacture is superb.

If it get's slung over the fence that's not my problem I've sold it..it's not mine anymore...

Surely it's up to thr recipient to insure it..

Hey you know..I'm just the sender, I'm only obligated to send the damn thing..how it get's there is not my fault...

You know..

I didn't say, "this will get to you completely unbroken"

I just said, I'll post it 2nd class.

Very handy there's a drop of point in a relatives workplace, down side is that my hermes ruined 8 out of 10 orders I sent with them, I had a string of annoyed customers and a pain having to re do orders, then takes ages for claims to come thru. Don't trust them with anything breakable.
