Washing machine reliability

I run five washing machines and my Zanussi one has only broken down once in five years . Two of the Hotpoints have a similar record but the two other Hotpoints break down about once a year . Which manufacturer of washing machines are the most reliable and how often would you expect a breakdown. |

I buy a new washer every 2 to 3 years, I only spend about £200 on a washer and when it breaks I replace it, I find that more cost effective than spending more on the washer and paying repair bills, if I get 3 years out of a £200 washer I feel I've had my moneys worth, I buy whatever makes in the sale at the time of buying |

the whole notion of 'built in obsolescence' seems to be changing more towards companies recognising that they should make things that will last longer and eventually be replaced by the same trusting brand...I hope I am not speaking too soon before something blows up in the kitchen... |

About 25 years ago I worked for a local Appliance retailer (was a mates dad's business. The Dad has now passed away, but my Mate is now running the show)
Back then we used to recommend Bosch, AEG and Zanussi. This was around the time that Zanussi were bought out by Electrolux - who saw the sense in ditching their own laundry range and replacing it with rebranded Zanussi items.
The Rolls Royce of washing machines though was Meile
We used to get customers coming in claiming to be loyal Hotpoint customers - always had one etc etc etc.
But something to consider is that in real terms, the cost of a washing machine has fallen significantly.
If you think of labour and material costs etc, Washing Machines when I was selling them, on average, started around the £320 - £350 mark.
How much are they now?
Pretty much the same.
That said, when I moved in here, I was given someones old machine (someone my sister-in-law worked with at the time was getting a new one)
It was a Hotpoint. It was a little noisy. I eventually replaced the bearings and it was fine for a while, then got noisy again.
Replaced the bearings on it twice in 4 years, then a few months ago, they let go big style. Managed to repair it and get it going again, but it had now developed a leak and the bearings sounded like they wouldn't last long, so it has been ditched in favour of a brand new machine, and while I would have preferred to get a Bosch, I have had to settle for a Beko due to financial constraints - and it was on very special offer.
My personal recommendation would be Bosch or AEG.

Why not just save a lot of time and read some Which? reports. Freely available in public libraries. Bigger survey samples than a handful of people on a swingers site. |

I replaced one recently when it was still working . It did seem same a shame to throw away an appliance which was still working . However a brand new machine makes for happy tenants and avoids too many repairs . Another Hotpoint which I also purchased recently broke down within two weeks of installation .. |

I feel that stuff in the past was made to last and now most of the white goods and smaller stuff, are just another piece of our "throw away society"...
Years ago I had an indiset washing machine .. 12 years with not one problem/ money spent on it , till it finally died! Since then have lost count how many i've had.... Same with irons, kettles, etc etc ... Stuff was made ta last but not any more it seems. Don''t matter what ya pay , even expensive stuff has a short life span! |

True , but sometimes comments on the forum can be more interesting than Which . I used to subscribe to Which but did not always agree with their assessments .

Bought a cheap beko one about 8 years ago when my expensive hoover one broke about 2 weeks after the 12 month warranty and a new motor (just the purchase price - me to fit) was more than a cheap washing machine.
The beko has worked fine, however, about 6 years ago an ex gf came round with her kids and they twiddled all the knobs. I have no idea now what programme is where on the dial, I just know that if I start at C, it does a short cool wash and spin, finishing with the dial at 5. I've tried several times to figure out how much it's been transposed by, but it has thus far defeated all logical methodical approaches involving protractors and timers |

started off with a second hand zanussi combi washer dryer worst one id come across but lasted a year managed to get hold of an indesit washer in 2001 best one that lasted a long time and failed in 2006
replaced that one with a newer type indesit and it still going strong now has one flaw in it it syphons up the little pipe to the soap box and then leaks
friends had the hotpoint digital lasted one year or less and the bearings went in the model same with the drier as well lasted another year same happened yet again with the bearings
i prefer dial machines as less to go wrong with them than if you choose a digital system |

Dated maybe, but if it works as well as it did when new, no problem. we are constantly being conned into upgrading tech when not neccesary. Buy well, stick with it I say. |

Agreed. New machine would have to be one hell of a lot more efficient to offset the cost of buying it when existing machine still works. |

Hids" . Wish move . It sounds like the bearings are gone . Quite an expensive repair and not worth it on an old machine .What is you model of choice . |

"Ive had 3 Hotpoints in more than 20 years. The first one wasn't even new. It was given to me. Not really had a problem with them. " . I usually buy Hotpoints . On some of the recent models I have found that the door catches can be a bit flimsy . One machine I had in a tenanted house lasted twelve years and only broke down three times so no complaints there .

Impressive as a machine with a life of 10 years is it's not always relevant. The washing machine market manufacturers change ownership frequently and a Hotpoint from 10 years ago may have little or no relevance to a current model. They may be good with traditional technology but weak with electronics and built in a different factory completely. Eg once upon a time you were confident if you bought Bosch you were buying a German made appliance, not any more, could easily be built in a Turkish factory. It's recent history that counts I'm afraid. |

My mother has an indesit washing machine that is in a small kitchen, so small the kitchen had to be built around the machine, and to replace the washing machine we would have to replace the kitchen.
So far it is 27 years old and still working.
We also have a washing machine, it is a white one, everything can be done on number 5. It's been there for about 7 years and I have no idea what make it is... |
