"it will end when people stop watching. theres not enough to turn to...they are all aboard the gravy train "
Yep! But as I said, all the time people watch, discuss and therefore make it viable in monetary terms is all the time the programme makers will assume its what people want and keep making it.

There are still plenty of other genres around, reality is a small part of the schedule. Watch what you want, ignore what you don't like. It isn't as though there is a shortage of channels to provide for everyone! |

So many channels all show very similar pap: endless programmes and series on cooking, house-buying, display of fatties,as well as the relentless slurry of reality TV.
There is the occasional decent programme or series, but, as Amis senior put it, ..more is less. |

thing is there is plenty of decent stuff out there, BBC, Sky, ITV, C4 and even C5 all pump out some pretty decent original content. Look at this week, Broadchurch on ITV, Suspects on C5, Cyberbully tonight on C4.....etc |

"fancy the cyberbully....looks great "
Won't appeal to everyone, same as reality, but it an original drama, produced here in the UK and will no doubt attract an audience. My point is there is plenty of new stuff out there. |

I do not watch any programs that refuse to employ scriptwriters and actors. Television is for the professionals, doing them out of a job is as bad as closing the mines because miners get paid too much and have too much safety.
Switch off the Television and they will change the programming. |

I have to admit I don't mind an odd bit of reality TV but there is so much of it on the telly we are being swamped by it...so turning over might just find more of it |

"To the OP...I am guessing it is cheap TV to make so why there is so much of it "
It isn't that cheap to produce and is difficult to sell outside of the domestic market. Whereas something like Downton Abbey for example can be sold around the world. As with all things it is a balance to cater for a broad audience. |

Hang on, I didnt suggest that, I just asked the OP a simple question.
Just because people sign up for 'Reality Tv' dosent mean they want to be like Jade, Jordon, Joey, or anyone else who has ever been on tv.
They probably do it due to money. |

Exactly, C5 doesn't own the BB concept so the only way it can make any money is from advertising revenue, and it won't do that well. What it will do is to help build an audience so that people stay with the channel. So last night for example they put their prime new drama Suspects on straight after CBB in order to leverage the audience. |

Yes
and the famousity of it (for want of a better word).

Most reality shows are owned by independent productions companies like Endemol and sold around the world. My point is that there will always be a market for this, it is expensive for channels to broadcast, but forms part of a schedule with some content that they own and can monetise (Broadchurch, Downton, etc etc) and some which they buy in at relatively high cost but drive large audiences and allow them to invest in better quality drama, comedy etc.
So in a long winded way, what I am trying to say (badly) is that yes there is reality, but it is a means to an end and I think the UK broadcasting/production industry does a great job creating loads of brilliant original content on a regular basis. |

I am guessing after seeing how some of them including Jade make a profitable life for themselves out of being on a reality show that there are lots of them who hope to follow the same path. I think that's what the OP was getting at. |

Exactly this, its cheap TV that gets people watching. I refuse to watch anything like it.
I want to be engaged and intrigued, I certainly don't want to watch what is fed for the lowest common denominator. If I want to watch people having drama I'll go and sit in wetherspoons on giro day |

You don't have to watch any particular program on the TV. No viewers for a particular program = no more showing.
Just watch what you like, or commission your own programs

Sadly I don't think we see enough of it though. Don't get me wrong, I love the likes of Strictly etc but I love it when ITV and BBC have a run of dramas going on, although I think I must be the only person who couldn't get into Downton Abbey. |

Biggest problem I have with it , it's not reality. It's contrived and staged . People are chosen because they'll play up to the cameras. How is that realistic ? The original concept was interesting . A group of people thrown together and observed . Now it's become it's own parody . The only one I think still has merit is i'm a celeb . Because it doesn't take itself in the least bit seriously. It knows it's stupid and silly . |

I'm not a fan or Downton either, but we have had loads of good stuff in recent years, Spooks, Call the Midwife, Broadchurch, Endeavour, Silk, Law & Order, Misfits - all original content, all aimed at slightly different audiences, all critically acclaimed and exported around the world. We can always ask for more, but I think we output quite a lot of really good stuff. |

In your opinion!
They obviously get the viewing figures and advertising revenue to justify it continuing |
