When aroused, some women may experience squirting, or a rather noticeable discharge of fluid. What it is exactly and where it comes from has been hotly debated: female ejaculation or adult bedwetting? Researchers are now saying that squirting is essentially involuntary urination.

Female ejaculate is technically the small amount of milky white fluid that’s expressed when climaxing, New Scientist explains. Squirting, on the other hand, results in a much larger gush of a clear fluid, which comes from the urethra, the duct where urine is conveyed from the bladder. The findings, which combine biochemical analyses with pelvic ultrasounds, were published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine on Christmas Eve.

A French team led by Samuel Salama from Hopital Privé de Parly II recruited seven healthy women—who’ve reported recurrent and massive fluid emission (enough to fill a cup) during sexual stimulation—to undergo “provoked sexual arousal.” The team conducted pelvic ultrasound scans after urination and during sexual excitation just before and after the squirting event.

All of the women had empty bladders before sexual excitation, however, urine collected just before squirting showed that the bladder was filling up. Urine sampled after squirting revealed that the bladder had been emptied again, revealing the origin of the squirted liquid.

The researchers also analyzed chemical concentrations in the urine samples (before arousal and after squirting) as well as the squirting sample itself. These included urea, uric acid, creatinine (a byproduct of muscle metabolism), and prostatic-specific antigen (PSA). The latter is a protein that’s produced in men’s prostate glands and in the “female prostate” called the Skene glands; PSA is found in “true” female ejaculate. Urea, uric acid, and creatinine concentrations were comparable in all of the urine and squirt samples. However, PSA, which was not detected before sexual simulation in six of the women’s urine samples, were present in urine collected after squirting and in the squirt sample in five of the women.

Squirting, they found, is essentially the involuntary emission of urine during sexual activity—though there’s also a small contribution of prostatic secretions as well. Salama’s team is now working on a protocol to test whether the kidneys work faster to produce urine during sexual stimulation than at other times, New Scientist explains. And if so, why.

I don't think anyone doubts that it is produced by the bladder and expelled via the urethra.

My understanding is that there is still some debate as to whether the secretion, which is typically different from regular urine (as this research concedes), is produced rapidly as a direct result of sexual arousal/stimulation.

Clearly, as it originates in the bladder, there will be substantial similarities with urine in it's chemical composition. It's the differences and the mechanism for its production which lead many to conclude that it's not just wee.

The article and research clearly states that it IS MOSTLY wee/urine. The addition of small amounts of chemical secretions from the scene glands may change the pH / colour /odour to some extent as would the mixing of any chemicals. Always been warm to me...I've had it in my face, on my bollocks and legs etc. and close up observation has never led me to believe anything but the truth of it's main origin.

I always giggle when denial it's try to say it is entirely produced by the scene glands. Anatomically these two glands are barely bigger than a grain of rice. Like to see them produce a similar volume of fluid. Or, as I experienced in one case, enough to water the plants in the opposite border of a garden!

In the end what does the actual source matter to anyone? If you enjoy it then enjoy! (And guys....stop obsessing about it. Ask most women. It's not the same as an orgasm....in my experience happens as much afterwards as during)

If we are talking not large enough....are you referring to the skene glands......because they are not large enough for sure!

I don't care what it is or if it happens. As long as everyone is happy and has fun, nobody feels bad that I don't, or disgusted if I do, and as long as I'm not manhandled by anyone determined that I will, dammit, it's all good.

I've started gushing sometimes as I've got older. Better technique from partners? More awareness of my body? More relaxed and comfortable? Aging and (slightly!) weaker pelvic floor muscles?

Who knows? Who cares?

Having now suggested my pelvic floor muscles may not be what they were 20 years ago, I'm off to do some kegel exercises!

Don't think the researchers would have had trouble finding overtime volunteers for this study

It's a big claim based on a very small percentile of claimants to make though.

Wow brilliant article - very enlightening. Makes a lot of sense to be fair.

The french are kinky boggers, if anyone's going to get to the bottom of this squirting malarky - it's them

It clearly does matter, given the frequency of the rows about it on here. A definitive answer could be the first step to fab peace.

They should do whether big boobs or small boobs are better next. Or maybe whether men who meet TVs are straight.

Was there ever any doubt. ...

The human body has been disected for hundreds of years, so all of a sudden people claiming there is a secret invisible area in the pussy, that rubbed right will produce a huge amount of fluid.....

I think that studies can and will show a great deal of things that aren't necessarily so, the study that showed the correlation between MMR and autism is a special one, the focus group was far too small, there was no control group and the study itself fails to answer even the most inconsistent anecdotal evidence. This is rubbish

Sadly you've lifted the shortened version of the real study concluded on this link which actually has more information on it.

As someone who has been involved in research, I would say the data produced in any research can be made to say whatever you want it to.

Damned statistics!

Questions

1) If its pee why is it clear and sweet, not discoloured, bitter and smelly?

2) It is part of my partner's orgasm; it is a deeper more tiring one and is stimulated either internally or via the clit (and occasionally the nipples).

3) Some women do release wee at same time so please explain two distinct liquids being ejaculated at same point.Guys can't pee and come at same time (or is that multi-tasking lol)

4) Can tell when my partner is ready to squirt as the sack by the g-spot inflates/expands to the point of being visible and engorged; is this others experience?

Frankly I love it so...
