I only use Google translate to work out single words only.
I speak a few languages and find that sentences are not accurate, particularly when the context is subtle.
And from the messages I get in French using Google Translate... well it's really not accurate. A couple came out insulting when they were not meant to be.
So I would say be careful how you use it.

" i guess it must be hard to get these translation apps perfect, but for a total none speaker I am sure they must be worth having on your phone, I am probably going on a motorbike trip around France in the summer, and only know half a dozen words in French, so I might be needing the app lol |

It is even impossible to get them perfect. Languages are so subtle. Nothing wrong with the old phrasebook you know lol and you have 6 months to learn basic French lol... here's a New Year's resolution for you
Your trip sounds fun though |

Your trip sounds fun though " .It would be a bit of a wasted energy and time to learn a language for just a holiday!.
I'd just learn some basic everyday sayings that would be handy like Bonjour excuse moi que vous parlez anglais mon français ne est pas bon... Or something along those lines helped me out on a few trips although I must admit France is certainly a place you'll struggle finding people who speak English, but with some basic French basic English nice smiles and pointing you can get by. |

Oh and I wouldn't go to the Alps in the height of summer myself again, it's very hot and quite repressive with the thin air, or that's how I found it the two times I was there watching the tour de France. |

Try the word lens app. It uses the smartphone camera to translate straight onto the screen. It doesn't use Wi-Fi or 3g, so I presume it uses magic to work!
In Lausanne earlier this year I knew what the French for lamb was, but the sauce was a mystery until I held the words lens app over the menu! |

Funny this thread should come up the same time as the Nostradamus thread, i just posted on there with a link to a video to youtube....Nostradamus predictions 2015. On the video it says 2015 end of language barriers all over the world, possibly through use of some kind of universal machine translation device? Spooky. |

Am gonna be a wee bit controversial for once and say that's why British people are so bad at languages... I say that with a smile btw... don't hang me lol
It's not a waste of energy and learning some basic everyday sayings is learning the language, at least it is a start |

I wasn't saying learning language perse was bad just not if your not going to use it. |
