Spoiler alert - this posting might annoy and offend those of a right-wing disposition.

A few weeks ago Hilary Mantell published a short story - a work of fiction - in which she described the assassination of Margaret Thatcher. The Daily Telegraph, which was going to publish the story, changed its mind about publication. The Daily Mail - and at least two Tory MP's - said that the story was disgusting and disgraceful, and that the police should question Ms Mantell (although on what charge I don't know).

Now, in the light of the appalling murders in Paris, these self-same newspapers and MP's are saying that freedom of speech is vital in a democracy and should be defended at all costs.

Do I detect the whiff of hypocrisy here?

Free speech applies to everybody, not just your friends and the people whose views you support.

"Hypocrisy in the Daily Mail?

Nonsense, have checked the Mail's reference guide:

Maggie is a Saint, t'other chap they're getting excited about is only a prophet, so no double standards all.

And if you spoke French in her presence, she'd've whacked you with her handbag

"It's this week's Book at Bedtime on Radio4."

I don't believe you!
