been running windows 7 for the last few years, some websites like youtube kept telling me that it will soon no longer support my browser, plus Microsoft auto updates kept asking me to update to windows 8.
2 weeks ago, I succumbed and updated via the microsoft auto update.
all was well until last night when I get a black screen (still with icons) and a message from Microsoft on the bottom corner of the screen stating "WINDOWS 7, BUILD 7601, THIS COPY OF WINDOWS IS NOT GENUINE"
WTF?? made sure it was from Microsoft etc, done some googling and it is a Microsoft thing, and the only way to put it right is to give Microsoft £79 for an authentication key 
turns out its a conflict between windows 7 and 8, and you have to pay
unless anyone knows another way ??  |

Don't do it. Go back to Windows 7. Windows 8 is crap. I had my new laptop for 2 hours before I wanted to throw it through a proper window. It isn't designed for laptops, it's designed for touch screens. |

Some where on laptop you should have a certificate of authenticity. It might be under the battery. That should have your valid key on it. You should then be able to either reinstall windows or reactivate it |

This is what I believe the correct answer to be. I was updating work computers from XP to 7 and encountered the same issue. Usually just means the key has to be entered somewhere.
As for Windows 8 bashing, by default, it is a little annoying but should you want the Start Menu back, download a program called Classic Shell. Never looked back x |

Running Windows 7 on a couple of machines and no pestering to switch to Windows 8.
I would be checking for malware on the machine, malwarebytes is free and reputable.
Also on youtube easy solution is use Chrome browser if those warnings are real too |

To be fair to them when windows 8 comeing out they were offering it for something like £25.
Roll it back to windows 7 if you want. Most people will probably miss windows 8 go to windows 10.
Plus Microsoft has promised to provide security patches even after it ends mainstream support, through 2020. What is ending is design changes, warranty claims and no-charge incident support. How many times does anyone call Microsoft for support? for the average consumer probably 0.  |

This. Use 7 a lot at work and on Tigs machine without issue or nags so I'd be tempted to dig out the key and start again with 7 of malware bytes comes back clean

if your lucky you maybe be able to revert back to windows 7
dosnt always work however if you have been backing up your system or have a system to revert it back to factory default
means it has some files in another place on your hard drive so it can do a factory reset of your system
also means in some cases you may have had to do a set up disc and the amount of people that dont do one is too many
as red has already said windows 8 is for touch screens or tablets in my eyes and they can keep it
oh and this "WINDOWS 7, BUILD 7601, THIS COPY OF WINDOWS IS NOT GENUINE"
there is copys floating around net with the same build number on it so it gives you a good idea as most of the time i would reinstall with that build |

ok, tried to take it back to a restore point, completely blacked the screen out, had to restart in safe mode to see any icons.
took hour & half to get back to before I restored it, done the malaware thing and it found nothing, fully usable at the mo but no wallpaper showing and it says no updates from Microsoft will be offered.
think i'll just stick with it as it is as due an upgrade, this lappys 5 years old now |

Yes, you have to pay if you upgrade from 7 to 8 |

As it happens I bought 2 tablets over Christmas both with windows 8 and 8.1. Both are in the process of getting returned.
Fucking amazing! Updated them and next thing you cant access half the icons that were previously there, and that is being generous. Huge black icons all across it!
Bring on windows 10? .......... Said no-one ever. |
