...get poorly, how long do you wait before you go to he doctors?
If you have, say, an ear infection or something non-life threatening, do you get antibiotics or just let your body fight it on its own?
A friend of mine has such a high resistance to antibiotics that she now has to go to hospital to have them by IV just to have an effect. Whereas I never take them unless I really really need to. If it's not better in a week or so then I might end up going to the docs.
I'd rather save treatment for when it's really needed. |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
If I'm not better in a week or 10 days and it hasn't improved at all then I will go to the doctor, for common ailments.
If it's something more serious then I go immediately.
Most things really don't need antibiotics and my doctor always suggests keeping fluid levels up and rest with some fresh air thrown in.

My grandma used to say "there's nothing a nice hot cup of my brew can't fix". Tablespoon of honey, the juice of half a lemon, and a cap of whiskey in boiling water. It used to knock me out cold. Then again I was 6! |

My old GP used to send us away with instructions to fast, add plain boiled rice on the third day and plain boiled chicken on the fourth. After that if you didn't feel better then she would see you again and give you drugs.
My earache this week is much better today. Once the glands went down and the coughing stopped it sorted itself out. Often it's about listening to your body and not being daft when you know something is properly wrong.

"im pretty good at knowing when im just off.. and when i need advise.
i panic when it comes to my daughter though and normally do the 111 thing first"
*warning not for squeamish people*
I'm usually alright at knowing when I need help. But after I had my coil fitted, and then removed the next day I was bleeding a lot. Bled through a pad in less than 5 minutes. Called 111 and they sent an ambulance. But it took 4 hours of bleeding for me to actually seek help haha!
My sister sees the doctor when she has the sniffles! But she's not got a very good immune system so I suppose she feels worse.
I currently have an analgesic headache. But I'd rather have a headache than a temperature! If I'm not better by Thursday night I'll probably see my doc! |

"I wish id gone sooner as I thought I had a chest infection by the time I went to gp I had pneumonia and ended up in hospital"
Similar experience here. I ignored a cough and temperature for long enough to get pneumonia and sepsis, followed by endocarditis.
I don't take chances any more. |

If its physical I don't usually bother the doctor but had to give in new years eve because I was in so much pain with my back. He talked me through it on the phone some exercises and prescribed muscle relaxants, wish I'd gone a week earlier |

I try to avoid going the Drs. Due to a couple if meds I'm in I have a very weak immune system. They always threaten to admit me to hospital. I now only go if it's tonsilitis as I get it a lot and need them removing |

Got rid of a cold before Christmas by taking Beechams as soon as it started which cleared it up.
Since then I've been suffering from a chest infection for a few weeks now, tried various remedies, now on Asda's own brand cheap £1.59 and took that with Benylin night stuff and didn't cough as much this morning as I have been so fingers crossed its helped. Got to be really ill before I go to the doctors so fingers crossed |

Good to see some common sense here. The idiots turning up at doctors with first sign of a simple cold, demanding anti-biopics are ridiculous. Worse still if the doc is sensible and doesn't give em then the same morons go n clog up A n E for any little minor niggle.....rant over! |

I hate going to the docs. Hate antibiotics even more. I get skin abcesses frequently and instead of looking into why I get them consistently I get thrown antibiotics. The worst time being admitted to hospital with septicaemia when I was 6 months pregnant. Last time they tried I told the doctor (who Just looked at me like I was making it up) to shove the prescription up his arse. I know I need surgery but will continue to suffer while they think antibiotics will really help. |

used to work chemical industry if you ever seen what went into most of the pills people take people would think twice about taking them even down to the humble paracetamol never mind the antibiotics |

I don't think there's any point in suffering just for the sake of it, if a trip to the doctor will help me recover quickly then I'll go. I take antibiotics if I need them (rarely) and any other prescription medicine if I genuinely need it. I probably see my gp once a year I don't feel thats excessive but when I had a chronic back problem it was monthly at her request and more frequently after surgery. |
