Just seen a gritter and it got me thinking....
Why isn't under road heating a thing? Think under flour heating, but outside, they can do the paths as well. Yeah, it'll be expensive to set up, but fairly cheap to run, if they use solar panels,like they do for street furniture. |

Great idea, let's add 10p to income tax to pay for it! Will be great value for the 2 or 3 days a year it will be of any use. Where do I sign up?? |

In our days of energy efficiency, I am not sure this is a clever idea. What cost to the environment manufacturing and installing the equipment? Just put an extra pair of socks on. |

As most Councils can't even repair the pot holes in the roads, I think this might be a non-starter.
The idea has been around for at least 10 years, and a Road Energy System is in use in the Netherlands which utilises a series of pipes, carrying water to/from a storage aquifer, in asphalt and concrete pavements.
I guess you would simply have to stop the electricity, gas, internet, water, telephone and Councils from digging up the roads and pavements..... |

Interestingly enough, I did actually see an article somewhere online last year about a company that have developed new road surface technology with LED lights which is designed to react and change road markings dependent on hazards and conditions etc - for example if a Deer walks out into the road ahead etc.
...and the system also included a heating system for keeping the roads usable.
But as has been said, a complete nightmare to replace current road surfaces with this technology - imagine the jams. |

They have this in several cities in Canada. Thermostatically controlled so no chance of melting the tar/bitumen. Needs to be done as the roads are laid tho....afterfitting is far to costly! |

Have you thought about getting a job with your local council or highways agency?

The Tinsley viaduct (M1) used to have under road heating from the cooling of the adjacent power station.
The bitumen didn't melt and it worked for a number of years in the 70 and 80s but was discontinued long before the power station was demolished. |

Just have a quick google of heated roads and you'll see it has even been trialed at Toddington services. Perhaps you owe the OP an apology |
